    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.10, pp. 3231-3249, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.069654 - 29 October 2025

Abstract The analysis of combining ability and heterosis is very important in enhancing the yield and oil quality of sunflowers under adverse conditions, and it reveals the potential of the parents and the mechanism of gene action. In this study, twenty-one hybrids were developed by crossing seven cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines with three restorer lines and evaluated for agronomic and quality traits. Highly significant general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were observed, confirming the role of both additive and non-additive gene actions. Among the tested crosses, A-42 × R-86, A-92 ×… More >

    Liangxiu Zhang1, Qinghai Zhao2,3,*, Feiteng Cheng1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.9, pp. 2177-2199, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2025.068499 - 30 September 2025

Abstract To advance the performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), this work proposes a novel biomimetic flow field architecture inspired by the geometric arrangement of sunflower florets. Drawing on natural principles of optimal spatial distribution, a multi-physics simulation model of the resulting Sunflower Bionic Flow Field (SBFF) was developed. Building upon this foundation, an enhanced configuration was introduced by integrating an annular channel, yielding a modified variant referred to as Modified Sunflower Bionic Flow Field (MSBFF). For comparative purposes, a conventional Traditional Parallel Flow Field (TPFF) was also analyzed under identical conditions. Simulation results underscore… More >

Abstract Sunflower leaf photosynthesis strongly depends on the leaf position in the plant stem conditioning, which directly affects other physiological processes. Therefore, a study of the leaf’s physiological status regarding the leaf position in the stem was performed on sunflowers in the flowering stage. Eight differently positioned leaves were investigated, starting with the youngest leaf on the top of the stem to the leaves of the stem bottom, assigned as the oldest senescent leaves. According to chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) parameters connected to photosystem II (PSII) processes, significant changes in PSII functioning occurred only in the senescent… More >

Xianwen Ji#, Ziying Jiang#, Jichao Wang, Lili Dong, Xinyi Deng*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.8, pp. 1839-1850, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.052809 - 30 August 2024

Abstract Genes in the glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) family are essential in regulating plant response to stressful conditions. This study employed bioinformatics to uncover the GSK3 gene family from the sunflower genome database. The expressions of GSK3 genes in different tissues and stress treatments, such as salt, drought, and cold, were assessed using transcriptome sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The study results revealed that the 12 GSK3 genes of sunflower, belonging to four classes (Classes I–IV), contained the GSK3 kinase domain and 11–13 exons. The majority of GSK3 genes were highly expressed in the leaf axil and… More >

Abstract Nowadays, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) turn out to be a core portion of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), that mainly focus on achieving continual Internet connectivity amongst vehicles on the road. The VANET was utilized to enhance driving safety and build an ITS in modern cities. Driving safety is a main portion of VANET, the privacy and security of these messages should be protected. In this aspect, this article presents a blockchain with sunflower optimization enabled route planning scheme (BCSFO-RPS) for secure VANET. The presented BCSFO-RPS model focuses on the identification of routes in such More >

Friction Coefficient Calibration of Sunflower Seeds for Discrete Element Modeling Simulation

Shuai Wang, Zhihong Yu*, Wenjie Zhang, Dongxu Zhao, Aorigele

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.11, pp. 2559-2582, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.021354 - 12 July 2022

    Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the four major oil crops in the world and has high economic value. However, the lack of discrete element method (DEM) models and parameters for sunflower seeds hinders the application of DEM for computer simulation in the key working processes of sunflower seed sowing and harvesting. The present study was conducted on two varieties of sunflower, and the DEM model of sunflower seeds was established by using 3D scanning technology based on the distribution of triaxial dimensions and volumes of the geometric model of sunflower seeds. Similarly, the physical
