Fluid-Dynamic Loads on Turbine Blades in Downburst Wind Fields

    Yan Wang1,2,*, Fuqiang Zhang1, Long An1, Bo Wang1, Xueya Yang1, Jie Jin3,4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.11, pp. 2651-2671, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2025.070122 - 01 December 2025

Abstract A downburst is a strong downdraft generated by intense thunderstorm clouds, producing radially divergent and highly destructive winds near the ground. Its characteristic scales are expressed through random variations in jet height, velocity, and diameter during an event. In this study, a reduced-scale parked wind turbine is exposed to downburst wind fields to investigate the resulting extreme wind loads. The analysis emphasizes both the flow structure of downbursts and the variations of surface wind pressure on turbine blades under different jet parameters. Results show that increasing jet velocity markedly enhances the maximum horizontal wind speed,… More > Graphic Abstract

Numerical Analysis of Urban-Rail Vehicle/Tunnel Aerodynamic Interaction

    Haoran Meng1,2,3, Nianxun Li4, Xukui Shen2, Hong Zhang2, Tian Li4,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.1, pp. 161-178, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.055389 - 24 January 2025

Abstract The pressure wave generated by an urban-rail vehicle when passing through a tunnel affects the comfort of passengers and may even cause damage to the train and related tunnel structures. Therefore, controlling the train speed in the tunnel is extremely important. In this study, this problem is investigated numerically in the framework of the standard k-ε two-equation turbulence model. In particular, an eight-car urban rail train passing through a tunnel at different speeds (140, 160, 180 and 200 km/h) is considered. The results show that the maximum aerodynamic drag of the head and tail cars is More >

Effect of Sweptback Angle of a Delta Wing on Surface Pressure Distribution at Supersonic Mach Numbers

    Shamitha Shetty1,2, Asha Crasta1, Sher Afghan Khan3,*, Abdul Aabid4, Muneer Baig4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.10, pp. 2353-2376, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.051059 - 23 September 2024

Abstract The purpose of this work is to shed light on the effect of the pivot position on the surface pressure distribution over a 3D wing in different flight conditions. The study is intended to support the design and development of aerospace vehicles where stability analysis, performance optimization, and aircraft design are of primary importance. The following parameters are considered: Mach numbers (M) of 1.3, 1.8, 2.3, 2.8, 3.3, and 3.8, angle of incidence (θ) in the range from 5° to 25°, pivot position from h = 0.2 to 1. The results of the CFD numerical More >

Computational Analysis of Surface Pressure Distribution over a 2D Wedge in the Supersonic and Hypersonic Flow Regimes

    Javed S. Shaikh1,*, Krishna Kumar1, Khizar A. Pathan2, Sher A. Khan3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.6, pp. 1637-1653, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.025113 - 30 January 2023

Abstract The complex fluid-dynamic instabilities and shock waves occurring along the surface of a two-dimensional wedge at high values of the Mach number are studied here through numerical solution of the governing equations. Moreover, a regression model is implemented to determine the pressure distribution for various Mach numbers and angles of incidence. The Mach number spans the interval from 1.5 to 12. The wedge angles (θ) are from 5° to 25°. The pressure ratio (P2/P1) is reported at various locations (x/L) along the 2D wedge. The results of the numerical simulations are compared with the regression model More >
