A Frost Heaving Prediction Approach for Ground Uplift Simulation Due to Freeze-Sealing Pipe Roof Method

    Shengjun Deng1,2,3, Haolin Chen1, Xiaonan Gong2, Jiajin Zhou2, Xiangdong Hu4, Gang Jiang1,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.132, No.1, pp. 251-266, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.020388

Abstract Freeze-sealing pipe roof method is applied in the Gongbei tunnel, which causes the ground surface uplift induced by frost heave. A frost heaving prediction approach based on the coefficient of cold expansion is proposed to simulate the ground deformation of the Gongbei tunnel. The coefficient of cold expansion in the model and the frost heaving rate from the frost heave test under the hydration condition can achieve a good correspondence making the calculation result closer to the actual engineering. The ground surface uplift along the lateral and longitudinal direction are respectively analyzed and compared with the field measured data to… More >

Thermomechanical Behavior of Brake Drums Under Extreme Braking Conditions

    T. Khatir1,2, M. Bouchetara2, K. Derrar2, M. Djafri3, S. Khatir4, M. Abdel Wahab5,6,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.72, No.2, pp. 2259-2273, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.020879

Abstract Braking efficiency is characterized by reduced braking time and distance, and therefore passenger safety depends on the design of the braking system. During the braking of a vehicle, the braking system must dissipate the kinetic energy by transforming it into heat energy. A too high temperature can lead to an almost total loss of braking efficiency. An excessive rise in brake temperature can also cause surface cracks extending to the outside edge of the drum friction surface. Heat transfer and temperature gradient, not to forget the vehicle's travel environment (high speed, heavy load, and steeply sloping road conditions), must thus… More >

A Mathematical Model of Heat Transfer in Problems of Pipeline Plugging Agent Freezing Induced by Liquid Nitrogen

    Yafei Li, Yanjun Liu*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.3, pp. 775-788, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.019810

Abstract A mathematical model for one-dimensional heat transfer in pipelines undergoing freezing induced by liquid nitrogen is elaborated. The basic premise of this technology is that the content within a pipeline is frozen to form a plug or two plugs at a position upstream and downstream from a location where work a modification or a repair must be executed. Based on the variable separation method, the present model aims to solve the related coupled heat conduction and moving-boundary phase change problem. An experiment with a 219 mm long pipe, where water was taken as the plugging agent, is presented to demonstrate… More >

Study of Temperature Field and Structure Optimization for Runways in Permafrost Regions

    Xiaolan Liu1,*, Yixiang Chen2, Yan Zhou1, Kai Zhang3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.130, No.2, pp. 1093-1112, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.018072

Abstract Pavement construction in permafrost regions is complicated by the fact that the permafrost properties are influenced by the temperature and are extremely unstable. The numerical model for runway structures in permafrost regions is applied to analyze the time–space characteristics of the temperature field and the depth of the frozen layer. The influence of the installation layer is studied to enable structural optimization of the runway. Numerical results show that the temperature stabilization depth, low- and high-temperature interlayer response ranges, and maximum depth of the frozen layer are greater in runway engineering than in highway and railway engineering. The time history… More >

A Water-Heat-Force Coupled Framework for the Preparation of Soils for Application in Frozen Soil Model Test

    Daoming Shen1,*, Xia Zhang2, Jinhong Xia1, Shunqun Li3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.17, No.1, pp. 21-37, 2021, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2021.010767

Abstract The freezing of soil containing a liquid is a complex transient heat conduction problem involving phase change and release or absorption of latent heat. Existing efforts have essentially focused on theoretical research and numerical simulations. In the present study, the problem is approached from an experimental point of view using the so-called “freezing model test” method. In particular, in order to establish a precise relationship between the model and the prototype, a temperature similarity criterion is derived using the condition of an equal number of Kosovitch. Similarity is also established with respect to other aspects. A similarity criterion for the… More >

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 775-783, 2019, DOI:10.31209/2019.100000081

Abstract Plagued by consistent temperature cracks caused by hydration heat of mass concrete construction, a lot of research on concrete DAMS and other large hydraulic concrete, the theory also more deeply, and for large span bridge foundation pile caps, corresponding much smaller size of mass concrete, the related research is less. This article obtains from the cooling water pipes "embedded" scheme optimization, based on the new Tianjin Haihe river bridge project as the engineering background, construction of the concrete hydration heat temperature rise theory model was set up, with the help of theory formula, the numerical simulation and field measurement, the… More >

Investigation into Spatter Particles and Their Effect on the Formation Quality During Selective Laser Melting Processes

    Zhiqiang Wang1, Xuede Wang1, Xin Zhou1,*, Guangzhao Ye2, Xing Cheng1,3, Peiyu Zhang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.124, No.1, pp. 243-263, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09934

Abstract During the selective laser melting process, a high-energy laser beam acts on the powder, a molten pool is rapidly generated and the characteristic parameters are constantly changing. Among them, temperature is one of the important parameters in the forming process. Due to the generation of splash particles, there will be defects in the microstructure, which will seriously affect the formation quality of the prepared parts. Therefore, it is necessary to study the relationships between the splash behavior, molten pool characteristics and product quality. The finite element simulation of the transient temperature field was performed by ANSYS software. Time-series images at… More >

    Qian Kong1, Genshan Jiang1, 2, *, Yuechao Liu1

    Sound & Vibration, Vol.52, No.4, pp. 9-20, 2018, DOI:10.32604/sv.2018.03749

Abstract The temperature field distribution directly reflects the combustion condition in a furnace. In this paper, acoustic thermometry to reconstruct temperature distribution is investigated. A method based on radial basis function approximation with polynomial reproduction (RBF-PR) is proposed in order to improve the accuracy and stability of the method based on RBF approximation. In addition, the refraction effect of sound wave paths is considered in the process of reconstruction. The curved lines with refraction effect are numerically calculated by solving differential equations, which show that sonic waves curve towards the zones of higher temperature. The reconstructed performance is validated via numerical simulation… More >

Abstract This paper analyzes transient temperature field with plane elements of finite element method of lines. Finite element method of lines treats transient temperature field line, using a semi-discrete in space, in one direction discrete numerically and another direction with analytical type. Using backward time difference, finally ordinary differential equations are obtained, and solved by ordinary differential equations solver COLSYS. Verification indicates that plane element of Finite Element Method of Lines can obtain transient temperature field with higher precision and faster processing speed. More >
