Abstract A high percentage of failure in pump elements originates from fatigue. This study focuses on the discharge section behavior, made of ductile iron, under dynamic load. An experimental protocol is established to collect the strain under pressurization and depressurization tests at specific locations. These experimental results are used to formulate the ultimate pressure expression function of the strain and the lateral surface of the discharge section and to validate finite element modeling. Fe-Safe is then used to assess the fatigue life cycle using different types of fatigue criteria (Coffin-Manson, Morrow, Goodman, and Soderberg). When the pressure is under 3000 PSI,… More >

Abstract Similar periodic structures have been widely used in engineering. In order to obtaining the optimal similar periodic structures, a topology optimization method of similar periodic structures with multiple displacement constraints is proposed in this paper. Firstly, in the proposed method, the design domain is divided into sub-domains. Secondly, a penalty term considering discrete conditions of density variables is introduced into the objective function, and the reciprocal density exponents of structural elements are taken as design variables. A topological optimization model of a similar periodic continuum structure with the objective function being the structural mass and the constraint functions being structural… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.84, No.3, pp. 229-252, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.084.229

Abstract This paper proposes an alternative topology optimization method for the optimal design of continuum structures, which involves a multilevel nodal density-based approximant based on the concept of conventional SIMP (solid isotropic material with penalization) model. First, in terms of the original set of nodal densities, the Shepard function method is applied to generate a non-local nodal density field with enriched smoothness over the design domain. The new nodal density field possesses non-negative and range-bounded properties to ensure a physically meaningful approximation of topology optimization design. Second, the density variables at the nodes of finite elements are used to interpolate elemental… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.78, No.3&4, pp. 151-168, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.078.151

Abstract This paper aims to demonstrate the final result of an optimization process when a smooth technique is introduced between intermediary iterations of a topological optimization. In a topological optimization process is usual irregular boundary results as the final shape. This boundary irregularity occurs when the way of the material is removed is not very suitable. Avoiding an optimization post-processing procedure some techniques of smooth are implemented in the original optimization code. In order to attain a regular boundary a smoothness technique is employed, which is, Bezier curves. An algorithm was also developed to detect during the optimization process which curve… More >
