Collapse Simulation and Response Assessment of a Large Cooling Tower Subjected to Strong Earthquake Ground Motions

    Tiancan Huang1, Hao Zhou2,*, Hamid Beiraghi3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.123, No.2, pp. 691-715, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09046

Abstract Large cooling towers in thermal power plants and nuclear power plants are likely to suffer from strong earthquakes during service periods. The resulting destructions of the cooling towers would endanger the power plants and threaten the security of the related areas. It is important to use effective means to evaluate the safety status of the cooling towers and guide further precautions as well as retrofitting efforts. This paper is therefore focused on an elaborate numerical investigation to the earthquake-induced collapses of a large cooling tower structure. A complete numerical work for simulation of material failure, component fracture, structural buckling and… More >

HIGH-RISE TOWER CRANE CONTINUUM MODELING AND OPERATIONAL ANALYZING

    Zhi Sun, Yuxiong Yan

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.19, No.4, pp. 117-118, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.019.117

Abstract Tower crane is the most generally used construction equipment for civil engineering structures. This paper proposes a method on dynamic modeling and vibration response analysis for high-rise tower cranes in operation. Concerning that tower crane structure is a beam-like lattice structure; a continuum modeling technique is firstly proposed to model the tower crane segment as a box girder element. The modeling based on this element will greatly reduce the number of degrees of freedom for tower crane dynamic analysis and thus improve analyzing efficiency. Based on the equivalent beam model, dynamic response of the tower crane induced by lifting, rotation… More >

Improved Failure Mode Identification and Reliability Estimates for Electricity Transmission Towers

    Xuwen An1,2, Jianguo Hou3, P.D. Gosling4, Dong Dai5, Long Xiao6, Xiaoyi Zhou7

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.107, No.1, pp. 1-25, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.107.001

Abstract Studies on the theory of structural system reliability includes identification of main the failure modes and calculation of inclusive failure probabilities for the structural system. The efficient and accurate identification of failure modes in structural systems is difficult and represents a key focus for research in system reliability. The fundamental theory of the branch and bound algorithm for stage critical strength is reviewed in this paper. Some deficiencies in this method are highlighted. Corresponding approaches to overcome these deficiencies are proposed. Calculated system reliability solutions to the classical model, a truss with 10 elements, indicate that the improvement measures proposed… More >

Stochastic Finite Element Analysis and Reliability Of Steel Telecommunication Towers

    M.M. Kamiński1, J. Szafran1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.83, No.2, pp. 143-168, 2012, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2012.083.143

Abstract The main issue in this article is computational probabilistic analysis and reliability assessment of the steel telecommunication towers subjected to material and environmental uncertainty. Such a discussion is important since very wide, frequent and relatively modern application of these structures, which are subjected to various sources of uncertainty and having at this moment no rich and time-dependent failure evidence. Numerical analysis is based on the generalized stochastic perturbation technique implemented as the Stochastic Finite Elements using the Response Function Method applied with the use of computer algebra system. A simultaneous usage of the engineering FEM system and mathematical package enables… More >
