Biofilter efficiency of Eichhornia crassipes in wastewater treatment of fish farming in Amazonia

    Rubim MAL1, PR Isolino Sampaio1, P Parolin2,3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 244-251, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.244

Abstract Fish is a very important part of the human diet in Amazonia. Near the growing cities, fish populations and individual size have decreased over the past decades. Alternatives to traditional and industrial fishing arise, including fish farming. Strategies to minimize the impact of fish farms on the environment are needed to have a regular and healthy fish supply. This is to avoid a reduction of biodiversity, a depletion of natural resources, and/or the induction of significant changes in the structure and functioning of adjacent ecosystems. Very little research has been performed on management of effluents as to maintain the quality… More >

Impacts of sewage irrigation on soil properties of a farmland in China: A review

    Li QK1, J Tang2, T Wang3, D Wu2, CA Busso4, RF Jiao2, XJ Ren2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.87, pp. 40-50, 2018, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2018.87.040

Abstract Fresh water is a valuable nonrenewable resource and plays an important role in maintaining economic and social development. Considering its large population and consumption potential, water resource deficits will certainly not allow a sustainable development of basic industries in China in the near future. Application of sewage irrigation, to some extent, was regarded as an alternative way to solve the problem of agricultural water shortage in some areas (such as North China). However, accompanied with an extensive implementation of sewage irrigation, some problems with sewage irrigation became gradually obvious in agriculture, especially those related with pollution and destruction of farmlands.… More >

Graphene-Based 3D Xerogel as Adsorbent for Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Industrial Wastewater

    Purnendu, Soumitra Satapathi*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 96-102, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2016.634134

Abstract Graphene-based 3D porous xerogel was designed through molecular self-assembly of graphene oxide on chitosan matrix and its application in removal of different heavy metal ions from wastewater was investigated. The synthesized xerogel was characterized through FTIR, SEM, XRD and BET surface area analysis. Heavy metal ions, including Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II), were removed from wastewater using this graphene-chitosan (GO-Cs) xerogel and the removal efficiency was monitored through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The effect of GO-Cs composition and pH on adsorption efficiency as well as the kinetics of adsorption was studied in detail. The study exhibited that this xerogel… More >

Waveband Selection with Equivalent Prediction Performance for FTIR/ATR Spectroscopic Analysis of COD in Sugar Refinery Waste Water

    Jun Xie1, Dapeng Sun1, Jiaxiang Cai2, Fuhong Cai1,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.59, No.2, pp. 687-695, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.03658

Abstract The level of chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important index to evaluate whether sewage meets the discharge requirements, so corresponding tests should be carried out before discharge. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) can detect COD in sewage effectively, which has advantages over conventional chemical analysis methods. And the selection of characteristic bands was one of the key links in the application of FTIR/ATR spectroscopy. In this work, based on the moving window partial least-squares (MWPLS) regression to select a characteristic wavelength, a method of equivalent wavelength selection was proposed combining with paired t-test equivalent… More >
