Simulation Analysis and Experiment Study of Nanocutting with AFM Probe on the Surface of Sapphire Substrate by Using Three Dimensional Quasi-steady Molecular Statics Nanocutting Model

    Zone-Ching Lin1, Ying-Chih Hsu1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 75-106, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.025.075

Abstract The three-dimensional quasi-steady molecular statics nanocutting model is used by this paper to carry out simulation analysis of nanocutting of sapphire in order to explore the effects of conical tools with different tip radii of probe and straight-line cutting at different cutting depths, on cutting force. Meanwhile, this paper uses a cutting tool of atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a probe tip similar to a semisphere to conduct nanocutting experiment of sapphire substrate. Furthermore, from the experimental results of nanocutting sapphire substrate, this paper innovatively proposes the theoretical model and equation that the specific down force energy (SDFE) during nanocutting… More >

A Meshfree Method For Mechanics and Conformational Change of Proteins and Their Assemblies

    Ankush Aggarwal1, Jiun-Shyan Chen2, William S. Klug3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.98, No.1, pp. 69-99, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.098.069

Abstract Mechanical properties of proteins play an important role in their biological function. For example, microtubules carry large loads to transport organelles inside the cell, and virus shells undergo changes in shape and mechanical properties during maturation which affect their infectivity. Various theoretical models including continuum elasticity have been applied to study these structural properties, and a significant success has been achieved. But, the previous frameworks lack a connection between the atomic and continuum descriptions. Here this is accomplished through the development of a meshfree framework based on reproducing kernel shape functions for the large deformation mechanics of protein structures. The… More >

AFM and Nanoindentation Studies of Bone Nodules on Chitosan-Polygalacturonic Acid-Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposites

    R. Khanna1,2, D. R. Katti1, K. S. Katti1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.87, No.6, pp. 530-556, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.087.530

Abstract Here we report a new in situ nanoindentation technique developed to evaluate the composite mechanical behavior of cell-biomaterial construct under physiological conditions over the time scale of bone nodule generation. Using this technique, mechanical behavior of osteoblast cell-substrate interfaces on tissue engineered materials (chitosan-polygalacturonic acid-nanohydroxyapatite (CPH) films) is investigated. Mechanical behavior of cells in the elastic regime over the time scale of cell adhesion (1 day), proliferation (4 days), development (8 days) and maturation (22 days) of bone nodules is evaluated. Our results indicate that the elastic properties of flat cells are higher (indicating stiffer response, after 4 days, as… More >

Yield Stress Prediction Model of RAFM Steel Based on the Improved GDM-SA-SVR Algorithm

    Sifan Long1, Ming Zhao2,*, Xinfu He3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.58, No.3, pp. 727-760, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.04454

Abstract With the development of society and the exhaustion of fossil energy, researcher need to identify new alternative energy sources. Nuclear energy is a very good choice, but the key to the successful application of nuclear technology is determined primarily by the behavior of nuclear materials in reactors. Therefore, we studied the radiation performance of the fusion material reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel. The main novelty of this paper are the statistical analysis of RAFM steel data sets through related statistical analysis and the formula derivation of the gradient descent method (GDM) which combines the gradient descent search strategy of the… More >
