Solving Rolling Contact Problems Using Boundary Element Method and Mathematical Programming Algorithms

    José A. González, Ramón Abascal1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.1, No.3, pp. 141-150, 2000, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2000.001.443

Abstract In this work an approach to the two-dimensional steady-state rolling contact problem, with and without force transmission, is presented. The problem is solved by the combination of the Boundary Element Method with a formulation of the variational inequalities that govern the problem in the contact area, producing finally a mathematical programming problem. This formulation avoids the direct use of the contact constrains, but it drives to the minimisation of a non-differentiable function, being necessary the use of an specific numerical tool as the modified Newton's method. Online Magnetic Flux Leakage Detection System for Sucker Rod Defects Based on LabVIEW Programming

    Ou Zhang1,*, Xueye Wei1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.58, No.2, pp. 529-544, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.04075

Abstract Aiming at the detection of the sucker rod defects, a real-time detection system is designed using the non-destructive testing technology of magnetic flux leakage (MFL). An MFL measurement system consists of many parts, and this study focuses on the signal acquisition and processing system. First of all, this paper introduces the hardware part of the acquisition system in detail, including the selection of the Hall-effect sensor, the design of the signal conditioning circuit, and the working process of the single chip computer (SCM) control serial port. Based on LabVIEW, a graphical programming software, the software part of the acquisition system… More >

A Nonlinear Optimization Algorithm for Lower Bound Limit and Shakedown Analysis

    G. Gang1, Y.H. Liu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 251-272, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.251

Abstract Limit and shakedown analysis theorems are the theories of classical plasticity for the direct computation of the load-carrying capacity under proportional and varying loads. Based on Melan's theorem, a solution procedure for lower bound limit and shakedown analysis of three-dimensional (3D) structures is established making use of the finite element method (FEM). The self-equilibrium stress fields are expressed by linear combination of several basic self-equilibrium stress fields with parameters to be determined. These basic self-equilibrium stress fields are elastic responses of the body to imposed permanent strains obtained through elastic-plastic incremental analysis by the three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM). CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 243-250, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.243

Abstract Based on the upper bound theorem, the fire resistance is studied using the combination of element collapse mechanisms of steel frames, where the element collapse mechanisms are automatically determined from independent mechanisms. The fire limit load is calculated by solving a nonlinear mathematical programming. The computing procedure is programmed by FORTRAN language. Results show that this method is useful to find the collapse mechanism with the lowest fire limit load, which can provide a theoretical and practical way for the fire design of steel frame structure. Fangyi Li1, Guangyao Li2,3, Guangyong Sun2, Zhen Luo4, Zheng Zhang2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.1, pp. 37-56, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.037

Abstract The focus of this paper is concentrated on multi-disciplinary and multi-objective optimization for thin walled beam systems considering safety, normal mode, static loading-bearing and weight, in which the uncertainties of the parameters are described via intervals. The size and shape of the cross-section are treated as design parameters during optimization. Considering the lightweight and safety, the design problem is formulated with two individual objectives to measure structural weight and maximum energy absorption, respectively, constrained by the average force, normal mode and maximum stress. The optimization problem with uncertainties is further transformed into a deterministic optimization based on interval number programming.… More >

Abrasive Wear Model for Al2O3 Particle Reinforced MMCs Using Genetic Expression Programming

    Metin Kök1,2, Erdogan Kanca3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.18, No.3, pp. 213-236, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.018.213

Abstract In this investigation, a new model was developed to predict the wear rate of Al2O3 particle-reinforced aluminum alloy composites by Genetic Expression Programming (GEP). The training and testing data sets were obtained from the well established abrasive wear test results. The volume fraction of particle, particle size of reinforcement, abrasive grain size and sliding distance were used as independent input variables, while wear rate (WR) as dependent output variable. Different models for wear rate were predicted on the basis of training data set using genetic programming and accuracy of the best model was proved with testing data set. The two-body… More >

Interval-Based Uncertain Multi-Objective Optimization Design of Vehicle Crashworthiness

    F.Y.Li1,2, G.Y.Li1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.15, No.3, pp. 199-220, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.015.199

Abstract In this paper, an uncertain multi-objective optimization method is suggested to deal with crashworthiness design problem of vehicle, in which the uncertainties of the parameters are described by intervals. Considering both lightweight and safety performance, structural weight and peak acceleration are selected as objectives. The occupant distance is treated as constraint. Based on interval number programming method, the uncertain optimization problem is transformed into a deterministic optimization problem. The approximation models are constructed for objective functions and constraint based on Latin Hypercube Design (LHD). Thus, the interval number programming method is combined with the approximation model to solve the uncertain… More >

Comparison of New Formulations for Martensite Start Temperature of Fe-Mn-Si Shape Memory Alloys Using Geneting Programming and Neural Networks

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 65-96, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.010.065

Abstract This work proposed an alternative formulation for the prediction of martensite start temperature (Ms) of Fe-Mn-Si shape memory alloys (SMAs) depending on the various compositions and heat treatment techniques by using Neural Network (NN) and genetic programming (GP) soft computing techniques. The training and testing patterns of the proposed NN and GP formulations are based on well established experimental results from the literature. The NN and GP based formulation results are compared with experimental results and found to be quite reliable with a very high correlation (R2=0.955 for GEP and 0.999 for NN). More >
