Is autophagy induction by PARP inhibitors a target for therapeutic benefit?

    AHMED M. ELSHAZLY1,2, TUONG VI V. NGUYEN1, DAVID A. GEWIRTZ1,*

    Oncology Research, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-12, 2022, DOI:10.32604/or.2022.026459

Abstract PARP inhibitors have proven to be effective in conjunction with conventional therapeutics in the treatment of various solid as well as hematologic malignancies, particularly when the tumors are deficient in DNA repair pathways. However, as the case with other chemotherapeutic agents, their effectiveness is often compromised by the development of resistance. PARP inhibitors have consistently been reported to promote autophagy, a process that maintains cellular homeostasis and acts as an energy source by the degradation and reutilization of damaged subcellular organelles and proteins. Autophagy can exhibit different functional properties, the most prominent being cytoprotective. In addition, both cytotoxic and non-protective… More >

Causes of the Water Resistance of Welded Joints of Paduk Wood (Pterocarpus soyauxii Taub.)

    T. Ganier, J. Hu, A. Pizzi*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 79-82, 2013, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2012.634101

Abstract Linear vibration welding of extractive rich Paduk wood from central Africa containing a high proportion of a native mixture of water-insoluble extractives, or of low water solubility, has been shown to yield joints of much upgraded water resistance. This has been shown to be due to the protecting infl uence the extractives from the wood itself has on the welded interphase, due to their inherent water repellence. Joints of unusually high percentage wood failure but modest strength were obtained; Paduk wood brittleness apparently yielding weld line strengths always higher than that of the surrounding wood itself. This indicated that Paduk… More >

Poly(ADP-ribose), adherens junctions, vinculin and the actin cytoskeleton: Current evidence, future perspectives and implications

    LAURA LAFON-HUGHES1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.12, pp. 2531-2535, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.022713

Abstract Poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR) is a highly negatively charged polymer. PAR is synthesized by poly(ADP-ribose)polymerases (PARPs) and is involved in the assembly and stabilization of macromolecular complexes. Here, the presence and putative roles of poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation (PARylation) associated to adherens junctions (AJ) and the actin cytoskeleton in epithelial and Schwann cells, is reviewed. The hypothesis generated by analogy, stating that PAR is associated to AJ in other cell types, is postulated. According to this hypothesis, PAR associated to puncta adherentia in chemical synapses would participate in plasticity, learning and memory. In turn, PAR associated to fascia adherens in cardiomyocytes, would affect heart beating.… More >

Abstract A calculation model of stress field in laser additive manufacturing of walnut shell composite powder (walnut shell/Co-PES powder) was established. The DFLUX subroutine was used to implement the moveable application of a double ellipsoid heat source by considering the mechanical properties varying with temperature. The stress field was simulated by the sequential coupling method, and the experimental results were in good accordance with the simulation results. In addition, the distribution and variation of stress and strain field were obtained in the process of laser additive manufacturing of walnut shell composite powder. The displacement of laser additive manufacturing walnut shell composite… More > Graphic Abstract

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.44, No.1, pp. 613-628, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.024449

Abstract Nowadays in the medical field, imaging techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) are mainly used to identify retinal diseases. In this paper, the Central Serous Chorio Retinopathy (CSCR) image is analyzed for various stages and then compares the difference between CSCR before as well as after treatment using different application methods. The first approach, which was focused on image quality, improves medical image accuracy. An enhancement algorithm was implemented to improve the OCT image contrast and denoise purpose called Boosted Anisotropic Diffusion with an Unsharp Masking Filter (BADWUMF). The classifier used here is to figure out whether the OCT… More >

Game Outlier Behavior Detection System Based on Dynamic Time Warp Algorithm

    Shinjin Kang1, Soo Kyun Kim2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.131, No.1, pp. 219-237, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.018413

Abstract This paper proposes a methodology for using multi-modal data in gameplay to detect outlier behavior. The proposed methodology collects, synchronizes, and quantifies time-series data from webcams, mouses, and keyboards. Facial expressions are varied on a one-dimensional pleasure axis, and changes in expression in the mouth and eye areas are detected separately. Furthermore, the keyboard and mouse input frequencies are tracked to determine the interaction intensity of users. Then, we apply a dynamic time warp algorithm to detect outlier behavior. The detected outlier behavior graph patterns were the play patterns that the game designer did not intend or play patterns that… More >

Stroke Based Painterly Rendering with Mass Data through Auto Warping Generation

    Taemin Lee1, Beomsik Kim2, Sanghyun Seo3, Kyunghyun Yoon4,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.130, No.3, pp. 1441-1457, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.018010

Abstract Painting is done according to the artist's style. The most representative of the style is the texture and shape of the brush stroke. Computer simulations allow the artist's painting to be produced by taking this stroke and pasting it onto the image. This is called stroke-based rendering. The quality of the result depends on the number or quality of this stroke, since the stroke is taken to create the image. It is not easy to render using a large amount of information, as there is a limit to having a stroke scanned. In this work, we intend to produce rendering… More >
