    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.7, pp. 1459-1473, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2025.02025-0046 - 22 July 2025

Abstract In this study, the casting process is used to fabricate modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), starch (S), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) polymer blend films (PVA/S/CMC) loaded with various concentrations of iron-doped carbon quantum dots (Fe-CQDs) and denoted as (PVA/S/CMC@Fe-CQDs). A one-step microwave strategy was employed as a facile method to prepare Fe-CQDs. Through a series of characterization techniques, fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to show the successful integration of Fe-CQDs into the PVA/S/CMC matrix. Loading the synthesized Fe-CQDs to the polymeric matrix significantly enhanced the… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.4, pp. 687-697, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2025.058902 - 21 April 2025

Abstract Tannins are polyphenols widely present in the plant kingdom, commonly divided into two groups: condensed and hydrolysable tannins. Sustainable furanic bio-foams based on condensed tannins have been largely studied, but little is described about the use of hydrolysable tannins for this material. This study examined the potential of hydrolysable chestnut tannin in comparison to condensed mimosa tannins to produce furanic foams by chemical expansion. Due to the low reactivity of the hydrolysable tannin, the use of an external source for its polymerization and curing was necessary. Through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) chromatography, it was More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Furfurylation, a renowned chemical modification technique, uses furfuryl alcohol to enhance the properties of wood. This technology can be further refined by incorporating renewable tannins, which promote cross-linking with furfuryl alcohol. This study investigates the effects of furfurylation and tannin-modified furfurylation on the physical and mechanical properties of tropical Gmelina wood (Gmelina arborea Roxb.). Experiments involved impregnating Gmelina wood with aqueous solutions of furfuryl alcohol (FA) at 40% and 70% concentrations, as well as FA-tannin combinations (FA 40%-TA and FA 70%-TA), followed by polymerization at 103°C. The results demonstrated that both FA and FA-tannin treatments significantly… More > Graphic Abstract

    M. A. H. Nizam1, A. F. Fuzlin1,2, A. S. Samsudin1,2,*

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.42, No.1, pp. 173-185, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jpm.2025.059244 - 27 March 2025

Abstract This work explores the dielectric and electrochemical properties of solid biopolymer blend electrolytes (SBEs) based on a combination of alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), doped with varying concentrations of ammonium iodide (NH4I). The SBEs were synthesized using the solution casting method, and their ac conductivity exhibited an optimal value of 1.01 × 10−5 S · cm−1 at 25 wt.% NH4I. Detailed dielectric and modulus spectroscopy analyses revealed distinctive trends in relation to NH4I concentration, suggesting complex dielectric relaxation behavior. The universal power law (UPL) analysis identified the Small Polaron Hopping (SPH) mechanism as the dominant conduction process in More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 329-347, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.056795 - 20 February 2025

Abstract In this study, two series of foams based on tannic acid (TA), furfuryl alcohol (FA), soybean protein isolate (SPI), and casein (CA), namely TA–FA–SPI (TS series) and TA–FA–CA (TC series) were developed, and their properties were enhanced by adding poplar fibers (WF). From the samples produced, a complete set of characterization was performed including possible crosslinking reactions, morphology, mechanical properties, flame retardancy, thermal insulation and thermal stability. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed possible covalent crosslinking among the components and hydrogen bonding between WF and the matrix. Viscosity results indicated that lower prepolymer viscosity led to… More >

Biobased Furfurylated Poplar Wood for Flame-Retardant Modification with Boric Acid and Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate

    Ming Ni1, Lei Li1, Yiqiang Wu1,*, Jianzheng Qiao1, Yan Qing1, Ping Li2, Yingfeng Zuo1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.8, pp. 1355-1368, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.054050 - 06 September 2024

Abstract Furfurylated wood exhibits excellent dimensional stability and corrosion resistance, making it a promising material for constructing buildings, but it is highly flammable. Herein, flame-retardant furfurylated poplar wood was produced via a two-step process utilizing boric acid (BA) and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) as flame-retardant components, and biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FA) as a modifier. The acidity of BA and ADP allowed them to catalyze the polymerization of FA, which formed a cross-linked network that immobilized BA and ADP inside the wood. The addition of BA/ADP substantially delayed the time to ignition from 10 to 385 s More > Graphic Abstract

    Chalcogenide Letters, Vol.20, No.8, pp. 599-608, 2023, DOI:10.15251/CL.2023.208.599

Abstract This study examined the properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a matrix composite, specifically focusing on the characterization techniques of UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). The investigation centered around a novel hybrid structure composed of CdZnS nanoparticles implanted within a composite matrix of PVA and Fe2O3. The analysis of microstructure data provided evidence of the influence of CdZnS nanoparticles on the structural characteristics of PVA–Fe2O3. The composites that were synthesized exhibited significant absorption peaks at wavelengths of 233 nm and 234 nm for PVA-Fe2O3 and PVA-Fe2O3-CdZnS, respectively. More >
