Yuguo YI, Jiamin ZHENG, Yang ZHOU, Zhiqin LIU, Dan WENG*

    BIOCELL, Vol.44, No.1, pp. 7-11, 2020, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2020.08686

Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents a huge threat to public health of the whole world. Around 25% of NAFLD patients will progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which has been predicted to be the main reason for liver transplantation in the United States in 2020. Extensive effort has been devoted to investigating the underlying molecular mechanisms of NASH pathogenesis and developing new promising treatments. Recent studies have demonstrated that pyroptosis, an inflammatory programmed cell death mediated by inflammasome and gasdermin-D (GSDMD), is involved in the development and progression of NASH. This review aims to summarize the recent findings regarding the… More >

    Kamaleldin Abodayeh1, Ali Raza2, *, Muhammad Shoaib Arif2, Muhammad Rafiq3, Mairaj Bibi4, Muhammad Mohsin5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.62, No.3, pp. 1125-1142, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.08885

Abstract This paper aims to perform a comparison of deterministic and stochastic models. The stochastic modelling is a more realistic way to study the dynamics of gonorrhoea infection as compared to its corresponding deterministic model. Also, the deterministic solution is itself mean of the stochastic solution of the model. For numerical analysis, first, we developed some explicit stochastic methods, but unfortunately, they do not remain consistent in certain situations. Then we proposed an implicitly driven explicit method for stochastic heavy alcohol epidemic model. The proposed method is independent of the choice of parameters and behaves well in all scenarios. So, some… More >

    Xiaodong Wang1,2, Meng Su2, Chuntai Liu2, Changyu Shen2, Xianhu Liu2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 89-99, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.08493

Abstract Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites is prepared by the immersion of PVA/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites in the reducing agent aqueous solution. The PVA/graphene nanocomposites can be used as scaffold after treatment by chemical crosslinking agents. The surface hydrophilicity of the nanocomposite scaffolds decreased with the addition of GO or rGO by measuring the contact angles of scaffolds. The electrical conductivity of PVA/rGO nanocomposite scaffold increased with rGO content increased. The highest conductivity of PVA/rGO nanocomposite scaffolds with 10 wt% rGO could reach to 12.16 × 10−3 S/m. The NIH-3T3 fibroblasts attach and grow well on the surface… More >

Alcohol hangover: impairments in behavior and bioenergetics in central nervous system

    Analia G. Karadayian1, Juanita Bustamante2, Silvia Lores-Arnaiz1, *

    BIOCELL, Vol.40, No.1, pp. 31-34, 2016, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2016.40.031

Abstract Alcohol hangover (AH) is defined as the temporary state after alcohol binge-like drinking, starting when EtOH is absent in plasma. Results from our laboratory have shown behavioral impairments and mitochondrial dysfunction in an experimental model of AH in mice. Our model consisted in a single i.p. injection of EtOH (3.8 g/kg BW) or saline solution in male and female mice, sacrificing the animals 6 hours after injection. Motor and affective behavior together with mitochondrial function and free radical production were evaluated in brain cortex and cerebellum during AH. Results showed that hangover animals exhibited a significant reduction in neuromuscular coordination,… More >

    Yan Wu1,*, Xinyu Wu1, Feng Yang2,*, Li Xu1, Meng Sun1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.11, pp. 1181-1195, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07493

Abstract The cellulose nanocrystals/graphene composite aerogel (CGA) and polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanocrystals/graphene composite aerogel (PCGA) were prepared by suspension titration, tert-butanol solution replacement and freeze-drying successively. The removal rates of methyl blue (MB) from water by CGA and PCGA were evaluated and the effects of additions, adsorption time, reaction temperature and pH value of CGA and PCGA on MB removal rate were discussed. It was found that the optimal concentrations of both CGA and PCGA were 2 g∙L-1 in the adsorption reaction process and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min. The higher the initial pH value of MB solution is,… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 313-324, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.00008

Abstract The biomass industrialization valorisation of grains and cereals is considered an opportunity for the countries where agro-industrial activity is one of its main economic activities, rendering new higher-value products with a concomitant solution to waste accumulation issues. To that end, in this work we describe and characterise bioactive compounds generation from rice husk by semi-solid fermentation, obtained from 500 g of the material at room temperature and 60% humidity with mixed cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Gloeophyllum trabeum. The extract was evaluated in different situations: murine mammary tumour cells (4T1), normal cells (NIH 3T3) and in Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Trichoderma… More >

Deliane da Silva Cabral, Antonio José Felix Car

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 325-333, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.01794

Abstract Poly(hydroxybutyrate)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PHB/PVA) blends plasticized with glycerol were prepared by melt blending of PHB and glycerol plasticized PVA. The PHB/PVA-glycerol compositions were 90:10, 75:25 and 50:50 w/w, being the concentration of glycerol in the PVA mixture of 10 wt %. The blends were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscope of the fragile fractured surface. The results showed one single phase blend, indicating miscibility corroborated by the presence of a single glass transition temperature. The blending method proved to be an efficient way to tune PHB properties keeping its biodegradable nature since both PVA and glycerol… More >

Biocompatible Blends Based on Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) and Solid Organic Waste

Antonio Greco*, Francesca Ferrari, Raffaella Striani, Carola Esposito Corcione

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.10, pp. 1023-1035, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07778

Abstract This work is aimed at the development of new green composite materials through the incorporation of the solid organic waste (SOW) in a thermoplastic matrix. After being ground, the organic waste was exposed to a sterilization process, though an autoclave cycle, in order to obtain a complete removal of the bacterial activity. The SOW was found to have a high amount of water, about 65-70%, which made uneconomical its further treatment to reduce the water amount. Therefore, a water soluble polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was chosen in order to produce SOW based blends. However, in order to reduce the… More >

Le Van Hai1,2, Lindong Zhai1, Hyun Chan Kim1, Jung Woong Kim1, Jaehwan Kim1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.7, pp. 621-629, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.06466

Abstract This paper reports green nanocomposites made by blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with cellulose nanofiber (CNF) isolated from recycled deinked copy/printing paper (DIP). The reinforcement effect of DIPCNF in the nanocomposites is compared with other CNFs isolated from native cotton and hardwood by means of TEMPO-oxidation. The prepared PVA-CNF nanocomposites are characterized in terms of morphology, chemical interaction, structural, thermal and mechanical properties. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirm the reinforcing ability of cellulose nanofibers into PVA. By blending CNFs into PVA matrix, the thermal stability of the nanocomposites is improved and DIPCNF shows similar enhancement effect with COCNF… More >

    O. Gil-Castell1,2, R. Cerveró1, R. Teruel-Juanes1, J. D. Badia1,2, A. Ribes-Greus1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.7, pp. 655-665, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.04401

Abstract Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based composite films were prepared as polyelectrolyte membranes for low temperature direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC). The membranes were functionalised by means of the addition of graphene oxide (GO) and sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) and crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA). The chemical structure was corroborated and suitable thermal properties were found. Although the addition of GO and SGO slightly decreased the proton conductivity of the membranes, a significant reduction of the ethanol solution swelling and crossover was encountered, more relevant for those functionalised with SGO. In general, the composite membranes were stable under simulated service conditions.… More >
