    Priyankar Datta1, Manas C. Ray1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.49-50, No.1, pp. 47-80, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2015.049.047

Abstract This paper deals with the implementation of the one dimensional form of the fractional order derivative constitutive relation for three dimensional analysis of active constrained layer damping (ACLD) of geometrically nonlinear laminated composite plates. The constraining layer of the ACLD treatment is composed of the vertically/obliquely reinforced 1–3 piezoelectric composites (PZCs). The von Kármán type nonlinear strain displacement relations are used to account for the geometric nonlinearity of the plates. A nonlinear smart finite element model (FEM) has been developed. Thin laminated substrate composite plates with various boundary conditions and stacking sequences are analyzed to verify the effectiveness of the… More >

    H. Altenbach1, V. A. Eremeyev2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 153-178, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.009.153

Abstract Within the framework of the direct approach to the plate theory we consider natural oscillations of plates made of functionally graded materials taking into account both the rotatory inertia and the transverse shear stiffness. It is shown that in some cases the results based on the direct approach differ significantly from the classical estimates. The reason for this is the non-classical computation of the transverse shear stiffness. More >

    X.G. Yuan1,2, R.J. Zhang3, H.W. Zhang1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 155-166, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2008.007.155

Abstract In this paper, the dynamic inflation problems are examined for infinitely long cylindrical tubes composed of a class of transversely isotropic incompressible Ogden material models. The inner surface of the tube is subjected to a class of periodic step radial pressures relating to time. The influences of various parameters, namely, the material parameters, the structure parameters and the applied pressures, on dynamic behaviors of the tube are discussed in detail. Significantly, for some given material parameters, it is proved that the motion of the tube would present a class of nonlinear periodic oscillations for any given pressures and the amplitude… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 97-108, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2008.007.097

Abstract For the inverse vibration problem a mathematical method is required to determine unknown parameters from the measurement of vibration data. When both damping and stiffness functions are identified, it is a rather difficult problem. In this paper we will propose a feasible method to simultaneously estimate both the time-dependent damping and stiffness coefficients through three mathematical transformations. First, the second-order equation of motion is transformed into a self-adjoint first-order system by using the concept of integrating factor. Then, we transform these two ODEs into two hyperbolic type PDEs. Finally, we apply a one-step group preserving scheme for the semi-discretizations of… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 201-212, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.006.201

Abstract This paper presents some simulation results of nonlinear dynamic responses for a laminated composite beam embedded by actuators of the giant magnetostrictive material (Terfenol-D) subjected to external magnetic fields, where the giant magnetostrictive materials utilizing the realignment of magnetic moments in response to applied magnetic fields generate nonlinear strains and forces significantly larger than those generated by other smart materials. To utilize the full potential application of the materials in the function and safety designs, e.g., active control of vibrations, the analysis of dynamic responses is requested in the designs as accurately as possible on the basis of those inherent… More >

    E.J. Sapountzakis1, G.C. Tsiatas2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 103-116, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.006.103

Abstract In this paper the general flexural-torsional buckling and vibration problems of composite Euler-Bernoulli beams of arbitrarily shaped cross section are solved using a boundary element method. The general character of the proposed method is verified from the formulation of all basic equations with respect to an arbitrary coordinate system, which is not restricted to the principal one. The composite beam consists of materials in contact each of which can surround a finite number of inclusions. It is subjected to a compressive centrally applied load together with arbitrarily transverse and/or torsional distributed or concentrated loading, while its edges are restrained by… More >

Fourier Analysis of Mode Shapes of Damaged Beams

    Kanchi Venkatesulu Reddy1, Ranjan Ganguli2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 79-98, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.005.079

Abstract This paper investigates the effect of damage on beams with fixed boundary conditions using Fourier analysis of the mode shapes in spatial domain. A finite element model is used to obtain the mode shapes of a damaged fixed-fixed beam. Then the damaged beams are studied using a spatial Fourier analysis. This approach contrasts with the typical time domain application of Fourier analysis for vibration problems. It is found that damage causes considerable change in the Fourier coefficients of the mode shapes. The Fourier coefficients, especially the higher harmonics, are found to be sensitive to both damage size and location and… More >

    Vladimir Sladek1, Jan Sladek1, Chuanzeng Zhang2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.4, No.3, pp. 177-188, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2006.004.177

Abstract This paper concerns the stability, convergence of accuracy and cost efficiency of four various formulations for solution of boundary value problems in non-homogeneous elastic solids with functionally graded Young's modulus. The meshless point interpolation method is employed with using various basis functions. The interaction among the elastic continuum constituents is considered in the discretized formulation either by collocation of the governing equations or by integral satisfaction of the force equilibrium on local sub-domains. The exact benchmark solutions are used in numerical tests. More >

A Rate Dependent Constitutive Model for Glass-Fibre / Epoxy-Matrix Woven Fabrics

    S. Marguet1, P. Rozycki1, L. Gornet1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.4, No.3, pp. 119-136, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2006.004.119

Abstract This paper deals with the modelling until rupture of composite structures made of glass-fibre / epoxy-resin woven fabrics submitted to dynamic loadings. The model is built at the mesoscale of the elementary ply. It takes into account the slightly nonlinear brittle behaviour of the fibres under tensile sollicitations, their nonlinear behaviour in compression as well as the strongly non linear and irreversible behaviour of the ply in shear. Strain rate effects are also introduced and special attention is paid to the objectivity of the model in the context of finite element calculation. Therefore the choice of a delayed damage mesomodel… More >

    G. Q. Xie1,2, S. Y. Long1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 11-20, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2006.004.011

Abstract The concept of the micropolar theory is employed to investigate vibration behaviors of carbon nanotubes. The constitutive relation has been deduced from the two-dimensional analysis of the microstructure of the carbon nanotube. Van der Waals interactions are simulated by a weak spring model. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain dynamics equations of the multi-walled carbon nanotube. Numerical examples for both single-walled and double-walled carbon nanotubes are presented and the significant difference in vibration behaviors between them has been distinguished. Numerical results show that fundamental frequencies for the cantilever single-walled carbon nanotube decreases with increase of the aspect ratio of them,… More >
