Developments and Prospects in Temperature Control Technique of Loop Heat Pipe for Spacecraft

Chuxin Wang, Qi Wu, Zenong Fang, Chang Liu, Guoguang Li, Ye Wang, Hongxing Zhang*, Jianyin Miao

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.4, pp. 1261-1280, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.066473 - 29 August 2025

Abstract With the development of space-based remote sensing and deep space exploration technology, higher standards for temperature stability and uniformity of payloads have been proposed to spacecraft thermal control systems. As an efficient two-phase heat transfer device with active temperature control capabilities, the loop heat pipe (LHP) can be widely applied in spacecraft thermal control systems to achieve reliable temperature control under various operating modes and complex space thermal environments. This paper analyzes the fundamental theories of thermal switch-controlled, reservoir temperature-controlled, and bypass valve-controlled LHPs. The focus is on the theories and methods of achieving high-precision… More >

Experimental Investigation of a Loop Heat Pipe with a Flat Evaporator

Guoguang Li, Qi Wu, Hanli Bi, Zhichao Jia, Hongxing Zhang*, Jinyin Huang, Jianyin Miao

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.2, pp. 651-662, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.062191 - 25 April 2025

Abstract The loop heat pipe with a flat evaporator is mainly divided into two forms: rectangular evaporator and disk-shaped evaporator. The rectangular evaporator has advantages such as low heat leakage, a thin shell, and a large contact area compared to the disk-shaped evaporator. However, most of the research on rectangular evaporators focuses on working fluids such as water, methanol, and acetone, when these working fluids are in operation, the internal pressure of the evaporator is less than atmospheric pressure. Ammonia, propylene, and other working fluids can also be utilized in the loop heat pipe, these working… More > Graphic Abstract

Modeling and Experimental Study of an Open Two-Phase Loop Driven by Osmotic Pressure and Capillary Force

    Hanli Bi1, Zheng Peng2, Chenpeng Liu3, Zhichao Jia1, Guoguang Li1, Yuandong Guo2, Hongxing Zhang1,*, Jianyin Miao1

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 55-70, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.057933 - 26 February 2025

Abstract As space technology advances, thermal control systems must effectively collect and dissipate heat from distributed, multi-source environments. Loop heat pipe is a highly reliable two-phase heat transfer component, but it has several limitations when addressing multi-source heat dissipation. Inspired by the transport and heat dissipation system of plants, large trees achieve stable and efficient liquid supply under the influence of two driving forces: capillary force during transpiration in the leaves (pull) and root pressure generated by osmotic pressure in the roots (push). The root pressure provides an effective liquid supply with a driving force exceeding… More >

Effect of the Wick Deflection Angles on Heat Transfer Characteristics for the Flat LHP

    Zhuohuan Hu1, Sixian Sun1, Chengwei Yuan1, Yan Cao2, Jiayin Xu1,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.21, pp. 107-123, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.041837 - 30 November 2023

Abstract Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) is an efficient two-phase heat transfer device, which can be used in waste heat recovery, electronics cooling, aerospace and other fields. The wick, the core component of LHP, plays an important role in its start-up and operation. In this paper, the wick fabricated by 3D printing technology had uniform and interconnected pores. In the experiment, the position of the parallel vapor removal grooves was always fixed towards the vapor outlet. When the cylindrical wick was placed in the evaporator, the rotation angle relative to its central axis could be changed, thus… More > Graphic Abstract

Randeep Singha,*,†, Gero Lappa, Jason Velardob, Phan Thanh Longa, Masataka Mochizukic, Aliakbar Akbarzadehd, Abhijit Dated, Karsten Mausolfe, Kristin Bussee

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.16, pp. 1-8, 2021, DOI:10.5098/hmt.16.2

Abstract In this paper, different options, based on heat pipes, for thermal management of electric vehicle (EV) battery system, at cell, module and pack level, for 40 to 400 W output heat, has been explored, analysed and compared. Cooling architecture based on embedded heat pipe (EHP) with single phase pumped cold plate (CP), as most adaptable design for low to medium range EVs, while EHP with loop heat pipe (LHP) as high performance design for high-end carlines, has been classified as potential cooling systems. Experimentally, it was shown that EHPs will provide best performance for heat More >

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF LOOP HEAT PIPE – A REVIEW

    Hao Guoa , Xianbing Jia,b,1 , Jinliang Xua,b

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.14, pp. 1-16, 2020, DOI:10.5098/hmt.14.14

Abstract With fast development of electronic devices, novel strategies of thermal management have been received great attention to dissipate high heat fluxes. As an efficient heat transfer device, loop heat pipe (LHP) provides ideal solution for such purpose. Even though LHP was invented nearly half-century ago, challenges still exist on its design, fabrication and operation. The objective of this paper is to present a thorough review on LHPs, paying more attention on the working principle, advantage and configuration. The review is performed in three aspects. First, the macroscopic operation characteristics such as start-up, temperature fluctuations and More >
