Abstract In this paper, a new method, named the Fragile Points Method (FPM), is developed for computer modeling in engineering and sciences. In the FPM, simple, local, polynomial, discontinuous and Point-based trial and test functions are proposed based on randomly scattered points in the problem domain. The local discontinuous polynomial trial and test functions are postulated by using the Generalized Finite Difference method. These functions are only piece-wise continuous over the global domain. By implementing the Point-based trial and test functions into the Galerkin weak form, we define the concept of Point Stiffnesses as the contribution of each Point in the… More >

Abstract Force plays critical roles in cell adhesion and mechano-signaling, partially by regulating the dissociation rate, i.e., off-rate, of receptor-ligand bonds. However, the mechanism of such regulation still remains elusive. As a controversial topic of the field, when measuring the “off-rate vs. force” relation of the same molecular system, different dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS) assays (namely, force-clamp and force-ramp assays) often yield contradictive results. Such discrepancies hurdled our further understanding of molecular binding, and casted doubt on the existing theoretical models. In this work, we used a live-cell DFS technique, biomembrane force probe, to measure the single-bond dissociation in three receptor-ligand… More >

A Unification of the Concepts of the Variational Iteration, Adomian Decomposition and Picard Iteration Methods; and a Local Variational Iteration Method

    Xuechuan Wang1, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.111, No.6, pp. 567-585, 2016, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2016.111.567

Abstract This paper compares the variational iteration method (VIM), the Adomian decomposition method (ADM) and the Picard iteration method (PIM) for solving a system of first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). A unification of the concepts underlying these three methods is attempted by considering a very general iterative algorithm for VIM. It is found that all the three methods can be regarded as special cases of using a very general matrix of Lagrange multipliers in the iterative algorithm of VIM. The global variational iteration method is briefly reviewed, and further recast into a Local VIM, which is much more convenient… More >

Different concepts for the coupling of porous-media flow with lower-dimensional pipe flow

    M. O. Doğan1,2, H. Class2, R. Helmig2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.53, No.3, pp. 207-234, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.053.207

Abstract Many flow problems in environmental, technical and biological systems are characterized by a distinct interaction between a flow region in porous-medium and a free-flow region in quasi-one-dimensional hollow structures. In this study, different model concepts, based on a dual-continuum strategy, for the simulation of coupled porous-media flow and (lower-dimensional) pipe flow are further developed and tested. The dual-continuum concept is extended for coupling multi-phase porous-media flow with lower-dimensional single-phase free flow. The complexity of the considered flow regimes is increased gradually. Examples are given for a coupled single-phase incompressible and compressible flow in both porous-media and pipe flow domains. Furthermore,… More >
