    Modeling and Bending Vibration of the Blade of a Horizontal-Axis Wind Power Turbine

    Abstract The blade of a horizontal-axis wind power turbine is modeled as a rotating beam with pre-cone angles and setting angles. Based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory, without considering the axial extension deformation and the Coriolis forces effect, the governing differential equations for the bending vibration of the beam are derived. It is pointed out that if the geometric and the material properties of the beam are in polynomial forms, then the exact solution for the system can be obtained.     Abstract Computer aided design of powerful gyrotrons for electron cyclotron resonance heating and current drive of fusion plasmas requires adequate physical models and efficient software packages for analysis, comparison and optimization of their electron-optical systems through numerical experiments. In this paper, we present and discuss the current status of the simulation tools available to the researchers involved in the development of multi-megawatt gyrotrons for the ITER project, review some of their recent upgrades and formulate directions for further modifications and improvements.     Abstract Closed form approximate solutions to nonlinear transient heat conduction with linear power-law k = k0(1±βTm) temperature-dependent thermal diffusivity have been developed by the integral-balance integral method under transient conditions. The solutions use improved direct approaches of the integral method and avoid the commonly used linearization by the Kirchhoff transformation. The main steps in the new solutions are improvements in the integration technique of the double-integration technique and the optimization of the exponent of the approximate parabolic profile with unspecified exponent.     Effect of Double Stratification on Free Convection in a Power-Law Fluid Saturated Porous Medium

    Abstract Free convection and related heat and mass transfer along a vertical plate embedded in a power-law fluid saturated Darcy porous medium with thermal and solutal stratification effects is studied. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations and then solved numerically by means of a shooting method. The variations of non-dimensional velocity, temperature and concentration are presented graphically for various values of the power-law index, and of the thermal and solutal stratification parameters.     Gyro-Chirality Effect of Bianisotropic Substrate on the Resonant Frequency and Half-power Bandwidth of Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna

    Abstract In this paper, the gyrotropic bi-anisotropy of the chiral medium in substrate constitutive parameters (xc and hc) of a rectangular microstrip patch antenna is introduced in order to observe its effects on the complex resonant frequency and half-power bandwidth. The analysis is based on the full-wave spectral domain approach using the Moment Method, with sinusoidal type basis functions.     Abstract In this work, an inverse approach based on depth-sensing instrumented indentation tests is proposed to determine the Young's modulus, yield strength and strain hardening exponent of the materials for which the elastoplastic part of the stress-strain curve can be described using a power function. Numerical verifications performed on typical engineering metals demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method. The sensitivity of the method to data noise and some experimental uncertainties are also discussed, which may provide useful information for the application of the method in practice. More >

    An Analytical Model for Explosive Compaction of Powder to Cylindrical Billets through Axial Detonation

    Abstract An analytical model, describing an explosive compaction process performed axially on a powder assembly of cylindrical geometry, is discussed. The powder is encapsulated in a cylindrical metal container surrounded by an explosive pad, which is detonated parallel to the major axis of the compact.
