Yongjiang Zhao, Haoyi Zhong, Chang Cyoon Lim*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.79, No.1, pp. 449-471, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2024.048771

Abstract This paper examines the difficulties of managing distributed power systems, notably due to the increasing use of renewable energy sources, and focuses on voltage control challenges exacerbated by their variable nature in modern power grids. To tackle the unique challenges of voltage control in distributed renewable energy networks, researchers are increasingly turning towards multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). However, MARL raises safety concerns due to the unpredictability in agent actions during their exploration phase. This unpredictability can lead to unsafe control measures. To mitigate these safety concerns in MARL-based voltage control, our study introduces a novel approach: Safety-Constrained Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning… More >

Yanjun Yan, Kai Chen*, Hang Geng, Wenqian Fan, Xinrui Zhou

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.137, No.2, pp. 1345-1379, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.027252

Abstract With increasing global concerns about clean energy in smart grids, the detection of power quality disturbances (PQDs) caused by energy instability is becoming more and more prominent. It is well acknowledged that the PQD effects on power grid equipment are destructive and hazardous, which causes irreversible damage to underlying electrical/electronic equipment of the concerned intelligent grids. In order to ensure safe and reliable equipment implementation, appropriate PQD detection technologies must be adopted to avoid such adverse effects. This paper summarizes the newly proposed and traditional PQD detection techniques in order to give a quick start to new researchers in the… More > Graphic Abstract

    Nisha Vasudevan1,*, Vasudevan Venkatraman2, A. Ramkumar1, T. Muthukumar3, A. Sheela4, M. Vetrivel5, R. J. Vijaya Saraswathi6, F. T. Josh7

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.8, pp. 1747-1761, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.027821

Abstract MigroGrid (MG) has emerged to resolve the growing demand for energy. But because of its inconsistent output, it can result in various power quality (PQ) issues. PQ is a problem that is becoming more and more important for the reliability of power systems that use renewable energy sources. Similarly, the employment of nonlinear loads will introduce harmonics into the system and, as a result, cause distortions in the current and voltage waveforms as well as low power quality issues in the supply system. Thus, this research focuses on power quality enhancement in the MG using hybrid shunt filters. However, the… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.6, pp. 1295-1305, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.027756

Abstract Utilization of Micro Hydro Power Plant at the Gunung Halu case study type run-off the river is a household use only in the afternoon, around 5 pm until bedtime at about 10 pm. Therefore, more than 75% of the energy is lost. This case study lost power which can be used as a by-product, such as for drying coffee beans. In this case study, a design was carried out to obtain by-products and improve power quality in the electrical system. In addition, they complain about the poor quality of power controlled by frequency using Triac-Based Electronic Dummy Load Control. The… More > Graphic Abstract

Power Quality Improvement Using ANN Controller For Hybrid Power Distribution Systems

    Abdul Quawi1,*, Y. Mohamed Shuaib1, M. Manikandan2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.3, pp. 3469-3486, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.035001

Abstract In this work, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based technique is suggested for classifying the faults which occur in hybrid power distribution systems. Power, which is generated by the solar and wind energy-based hybrid system, is given to the grid at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). A boost converter along with perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is utilized in this system to obtain a constant link voltage. In contrast, the link voltage of the wind energy conversion system (WECS) is retained with the assistance of a Proportional Integral (PI) controller. The grid synchronization is tainted with the assistance of… More >

    M. Hari Prabhu*, K. Sundararaju

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.3, pp. 2947-2958, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.032328

Abstract The power system is facing numerous issues when the distributed generation is added to the existing system. The existing power system has not been planned with flawless power quality control. These restrictions in the power transmission generation system are compensated by the use of devices such as the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) series/shunt compensators, etc. In this work, UPQC’s plan with the joint activity of photovoltaic (PV) exhibits is proposed. The proposed system is made out of series and shunt regulators and PV. A boost converter connects the DC link to the PV source,… More >

    K. Naresh Kumar1,*, S. Srinath2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.3, pp. 2623-2638, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.031713

Abstract This paper concentrates on compensating the power quality issues which have been increased in day-to-day life due to the enormous usage of loads with power electronic control. One such solution is compensating devices like Pension Protection Fund (PPF), Active power filter (APF), hybrid power filter (HPF), etc., which are used to overcome Power Quality (PQ) issues. The proposed method used here is an active compensator called unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) which is a combination of shunt and series type active filter connected via a common DC link. The primary objective is to investigate the behavior of the compensators in… More >

    Feng Zhao1,2, Di Liao1,*, Xiaoqiang Chen1,2, Ying Wang1,2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.5, pp. 1133-1148, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.025900

Abstract Aiming at the problems of multiple types of power quality composite disturbances, strong feature correlation and high recognition error rate, a method of power quality composite disturbances identification based on multi-resolution S-transform and decision tree was proposed. Firstly, according to IEEE standard, the signal models of seven single power quality disturbances and 17 combined power quality disturbances are given, and the disturbance waveform samples are generated in batches. Then, in order to improve the recognition accuracy, the adjustment factor is introduced to obtain the controllable time-frequency resolution through multi-resolution S-transform time-frequency domain analysis. On this basis, five disturbance time-frequency domain… More >

    Fuyin Ni1,2, Kai Li2,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.5, pp. 1203-1221, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.025796

Abstract Unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) with energy storage is commonly based on conventional capacity configuration strategy with power angle control. It has problems such as phase jumping before and after compensation. DC-link cannot continuously emit active power externally. Therefore, this paper presents the compensation strategy of full load voltage magnitude and phase in capacity configuration of UPQC. The topology of UPQC is integrated a series active power filter (SAPF), a shunt active power filter (PAPF) and a photovoltaic-battery energy storage system (PV-BESS). The principle of full load voltage compensation is analyzed based on the PV-BESS-UPQC topology. The magnitude constant of… More > Graphic Abstract
