Yong Wang*, Rui-Zhi Jia*, Shu Diao*, Jun He, Li Jia

    Oncology Research, Vol.28, No.2, pp. 203-212, 2020, DOI:10.3727/096504019X15761480623959

Abstract Despite the considerable knowledge on the involvement of microRNA-101 (miR-101) in the evolution of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. In this study, miR-101 expression was markedly downregulated in the OSCC cell lines and tissues. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), ethynyl deoxyuridine (EdU), and colony formation assays showed that miR-101 inhibited the proliferation of OSCC cells. Flow cytometry and caspase 3 activity assays indicated that miR-101 induced OSCC cell apoptosis. Transwell assays demonstrated that this miRNA also repressed OSCC cell migration and invasion. Moreover, tube formation assay showed that miR-101 abated the proangiogenesis of OSCC cells. Dual-luciferase… More >

Donghai Zhuang1, Li Liang1, Hongzhan Zhang, Xianguang Feng

    Oncology Research, Vol.28, No.4, pp. 399-408, 2020, DOI:10.3727/096504020X15864296270581

Abstract miRNAs play an important role in progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this work, we assessed the function of miR-202 in human HCC and identified BCL2 as its target. We found miR-202 expression was found significantly downregulated, while BCL2 expression was markedly upregulated in HCC tissues and cell lines (HepG2, Hep3B, and HCCLM3). Both miR-202 and BCL2 were closely correlated with major vascular invasion and advanced TNM stage as well as overall survival of HCC patients. Overexpression of miR-202 significantly inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase, and prevented tumor formation in a xenograft… More >

Wei Song*, Jia-Zhuan Mei, Mingzhi Zhang

    Oncology Research, Vol.28, No.9, pp. 971-972, 2020, DOI:10.3727/096504022X16414984936791

Abstract Accumulating evidence has indicated that long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) PlncRNA-1 plays an important regulatory role in cancers. However, the expression and biological functions of PlncRNA-1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) are still unclear. In the present study, we determined the expression of PlncRNA-1 in CRC and explored the function of PlncRNA-1 on CRC cell progression. The results showed that PlncRNA-1 was significantly increased in CRC tissues and cell lines; high PlncRNA-1 expression was associated with depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, and TNM stage of CRC patients. Kaplan–Meier curve analysis showed that patients with high PlncRNA-1 expression had a poor overall… More >

Abstract The kinesin family member 18A protein was dysregulated in several human cancers and involved in cancer progression. However, the significance in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) has not been studied. The present study was intended to explore the functions of KIF18A in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma. The immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay was performed to assess the relationships between the KIF18A protein expression level and clinical-pathological features of the patients. The biological functions of KIF18A in OTSCC cells were investigated by the experiments in vitro and in vivo. Based on immunohistochemistry, we found that KIF18A was correlated with the clinical-pathological… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 417-431, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.015522

Abstract Tumor progression is usually characterized by proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis, which is essential for supplying both nutrients and oxygen to the tumor cells. Therefore, targeting angiogenesis has been considered a promising therapeutic strategy for cancer prevention and treatment. In the present study, we demonstrated that in addition to suppressing lung cancer cell proliferation and migration in vitro, 10-hydroxycamptothecin (10-HCPT) is also capable of inhibiting angiogenesis in vivo with a miR-181a-dependent manner. Mechanistically, by upregulating miR-181a, which in turn downregulating FOXP1, 10-HCPT can inhibit the PI3K/Akt/ERK signaling pathwaymediated angiogenesis. Furthermore, reduced levels of miR-181a have been found in both lung cancer… More >

Ubiquitin-like posttranslational modifications in NAFLD progression and treatment

    FUJI YANG1, YAN HUANG1, YOUWEN TAN2,*, YONGMIN YAN1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 389-400, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.015899

Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a long-lasting condition that affects the liver, destroying its function. Liver injury can cause steatosis and inflammation, and further activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) often leads to the development of nonalcoholic liver fibrosis. The patient with NAFLD is at risk of developing advanced liver disease and complications, such as liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and portal hypertension. Although our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of NAFLD has greatly improved in recent years, treatment remains limited. Analysis and characterization of protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs) could improve our understanding of NAFLD pathology and… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.3, pp. 711-722, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.014193

Abstract Uncontrolled proliferation is a hallmark of cancer cells, yet the molecular mechanisms that contribute to this proliferation are unclear. Therapeutic treatment of cancer is suboptimal in many cases, with no accurate index by which to evaluate the success of treatment or patient prognosis. In this study, we explored the protein levels of nuclear phosphoeIF4E in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines and primary leukemia samples by Western blot and immunofluorescence and as well analyzed transcriptomes by RNA-seq. We found nuclear phospho-eIF4E, an exporter of oncogenic mRNAs, to be abundant in AML. Further, nuclear phospho-eIF4E abundance was significantly associated with tumor… More >
