Implications of enolase in the RANKL-mediated osteoclast activity following spinal cord injury

    RAMSHA SHAMS1,2, NAREN L. BANIK1,2,3,*, AZIZUL HAQUE1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.6, pp. 1453-1457, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.017659 - 01 September 2021

Abstract Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a debilitating condition characterized by damage to the spinal cord, resulting in loss of function, mobility, and sensation. Although increasingly prevalent in the US, no FDA-approved therapy exists due to the unfortunate complexity of the condition, and the difficulties of SCI may be furthered by the development of SCI-related complications, such as osteoporosis. SCI demonstrates two crucial stages for consideration: the primary stage and the secondary stage. While the primary stage is suggested to be immediate and irreversible, the secondary stage is proposed as a promising window of opportunity for… More >

Effects of IL-34 on the secretion of RANKL/OPG by fibroblast-like synoviocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells in rheumatoid arthritis

    Meiying Cui1, Xin Li1,2, Yimeng Lei1, Liping Xia1, Jing Lu1, Hui Shen1

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.30, No.2, pp. 67-73, 2019, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2019.0428

Abstract Objective: To detect the effect of interleukin (IL)-34 on the secretion of Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)/Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 by fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and to investigate whether the effect is mediated by IL-17. Method: RA-FLS and RA-PBMCs were stimulated with recombinant human (rh) IL-34, with or without the IL-17 inhibitor Plumbagin. The supernatant of the culture medium was collected and the levels of RANKL, OPG, and MMP-3 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: RhIL-34 promoted RANKL… More >

Validity of Osteoprotegerin and Receptor Activator of NF-κB Ligand for the Detection of Bone Metastasis in Breast Cancer

    Gamal A. Elfar*†, Mohamed A. Ebrahim, Nehal M. Elsherbiny*, Laila A. Eissa*

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 641-650, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504016X14768398678750

Abstract Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a robust antiresorptive molecule that acts as a decoy receptor for the receptor activator of nuclear factor kB ligand (RANKL), the mediator of osteoclastogenesis. This study was designed to explore the possible role of serum OPG and RANKL in detecting bone metastasis in breast cancer and its interaction with clinicopathologic parameters. Serum levels of RANKL and OPG were estimated in 44 metastatic and 36 nonmetastatic breast cancer patients using ELISA kits. Serum OPG levels were significantly reduced in patients with bone metastasis and correlated negatively with the number of bone lesions and… More >

Modelling the spatial behavior of Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in growing avocado

    Maldonado FI1, JF Ramírez2, M Rubí2, X Antonio3, AV Lara4, AD Acosta4, R Rivera4, AL Ávila5

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 97-111, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.097

Abstract Avocado (Lauraceae: Persea americana Mill.) is a crop of great economic importance for Mexico in terms of perennial production systems, since in recent years the marketing of this fruit has increased markedly at national and international levels. In 2013, 168113.64 ha were cultivated in Mexico, with an average yield of 10.2 ton/ha, obtaining a production of approximately 1467837.35 ton. Like any other fruit can suffer damage from pests (insects, nematodes, mites etc.) and diseases (caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses). In this regard, one of the most problematic insects is rankliniella occidentalis, which causes significant crop losses,… More >
