    Abstract Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by dysfunction of the alpha motor neurons of the spinal cord. It is an autosomal recessive disease associated to the SMN1 gene, located in the subtelomeric region of 5q13. A paralog SMN2 gene is located at the centromeric region of the same chromosome, which apparently originated by an ancestral inverted duplication occurring only in humans. The exon sequence differs in two nucleotides in exon 7 and exon 8, which leads to an SMN2 transcript that lacks exon 7 and results in a truncated protein.     Abstract The slow steady rotation of a micropolar fluid spheroid whose shape deviates slightly from that of a sphere in concentric spheroidal container filled with Newtonian viscous fluid is studied analytically. The boundary conditions used are the continuity of velocity and stress components, and spin vorticity relation. The torque and wall correction factor exerted on the micropolar fluid spheroid is obtained.     Abstract A spike response model (SRM) based on the spikes generator circuit (SGC) of adaptive fuzzy spiking neurons (AFSNs) is developed. The SRM is simulated in MatlabTM environment. The proposed model is applied to a configuration of a fuzzy exclusive or (fuzzy XOR) operator, as an illustrative example. A description of the comparison of AFSNs with other similar methods is given.     Abstract In this study, Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) technique was used to measure the surface displacement and strain fields around cracks in concrete beams. ESPI has high accuracy and can determine full-field deformations of concrete. However, tiny rigid-body movements of beam specimens can spoil the ESPI measurement and cause virtual deformations and false strains.
