    Appropriate Heart Rate in a Patient with Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot

    Abstract Appropriate heart rate in a failing pulmonary ventricle remains unknown, particularly in congenital heart disease with unique hemodynamics. A 71-year-old male with repaired tetralogy of Fallot and a pacemaker for a sinus node dysfunction suffered from heart failure symptoms with preserved left ventricular function. Simply changing the pacemaker’s lower rate from 60 to 75 bpm, New York Heart Association classification improved from III to II, and hemodynamic parameters drastically improved. We regarded this case as informative. Appropriate heart rate could be higher in congenital patients with failing right and non-failing left ventricles than in adults with malfunctioning LV.     Abstract Mammalian cell surfaces consist of the plasma membrane supported by an underneath cortical cytoskeleton. Together, these structures can control not only the shape of cells but also a series of cellular functions ranging from migration and division to exocytosis, endocytosis and differentiation. Furthermore, the cell surface is capable of exerting and reacting to mechanical forces.     Abstract Polyploid plants grow well, are stress tolerant, and are rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds. Thus, they are useful for improving crop quality and yield. In this study, we compared the seed characteristics and metabolite profiles of diploid and tetraploid tartary buckwheat, which was developed via an artificially induced chromosome doubling event. The length, width, area, and thousand-grain weight were greater for the tetraploid seeds than for the diploid seeds. However, the germination rate decreased for the tetraploid seeds.     The role of baicalin on carbon tetrachloride induced liver fibrosis

    Abstract The effect of the baicalin, a bio-active flavonoid extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, on the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver fibrosis was investigated. To compare the effect of baicalin on the liver fibrosis, five different groups of rats treated by 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg baicalin were studied. Upon CCl4 treatment, the levels of procollagen type III, aspartate aminotransferase, aminotransferase, hyaluronic acid, and hydroxyproline were significantly increased, whereas the superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase content were decreased.
