    Biosynthesis of proline in fruits of green bean plants: deficiency versus toxicity of nitrogen

    Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the effect of deficiency versus toxicity of N on biosynthesis of proline in fruits of green bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Strike). Nitrogen was applied to the nutritive solution in the form of NH4NO3 at 1.5 mM (N1), 3.0 mM (N2), 6.0 mM (N3, optimal level), 12.0 mM (N4), 18.0 mM (N5), and 24.0 mM (N6).     Abstract The addition of chlorine constitutes an economical disinfection method for closed, soil-less systems. Three quantities of sodium hypochlorite (0.55, 5.5 and 11 ppm) were applied to closed, soil-less greenhouse- grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa), to study the effect on its production (fresh weight and dry matter) and some commercial and nutritional quality factors (phytotoxicity, Vitamin C, nitrates). Sodium hypochlorite was weekly added within the nutrient solution, and the chemical properties (pH, EC and chlorides) of the recycled solution were measured.     Mouse cerebellar Purkinje cell damage induced by diphenylhydantoin acute intoxication

    Abstract Twenty one days old Swiss albino mice that received diphenylhydantoin (25 mg/kg, i.p., daily for 15 days) progressively developed gait alterations, changes of behavior and cerebellar ataxia. Cerebellar slices were processed by conventional transmission electron microscopy. The body of Purkinje cells exhibited fragmented limiting plasma membranes, dilated nuclear envelopes, swelling and disassembly of nuclear pores, enlargement of rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum and a notable detachment of membrane associated ribosomes, together with distorted vacuoles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, bizarre shaped and swollen mitochondria with dilated cristae, as well as disrupted limiting lysosomal membranes.     Abstract Current investigation has shown that human exposure to aflatoxins is not limited to the administration of contaminated cereals, but water is another possible source. This study was aimed to design easily applicable method to eliminate aflatoxin B2 (AFB2) from contaminated drinking water. Electrospinning has been used for preparation of probiotic-coated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers. Both of these hybrid nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).     Abstract Exposure of either gametes or embryos to conditions and/or factors that generate oxidative stress has been associated with impaired early embryogenesis. The effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on mouse preimplantation development, depending of the ROS-concentration and time of exposition, were studied. Two-cell embryos were incubated with 5, 10, 25 and 50 μM of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 30 and 60 minutes of exposition and allowed to develop for 72 h to study the quality of development.     Abstract Graphene-based 3D porous xerogel was designed through molecular self-assembly of graphene oxide on chitosan matrix and its application in removal of different heavy metal ions from wastewater was investigated. The synthesized xerogel was characterized through FTIR, SEM, XRD and BET surface area analysis. Heavy metal ions, including Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II), were removed from wastewater using this graphene-chitosan (GO-Cs) xerogel and the removal efficiency was monitored through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
