Machine Learning Prediction Models of Optimal Time for Aortic Valve Replacement in Asymptomatic Patients

    Salah Alzghoul1,*, Othman Smadi1, Ali Al Bataineh2, Mamon Hatmal3, Ahmad Alamm4

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.37, No.1, pp. 455-470, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.038338

Abstract Currently, the decision of aortic valve replacement surgery time for asymptomatic patients with moderate-to-severe aortic stenosis (AS) is made by healthcare professionals based on the patient’s clinical biometric records. A delay in surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) can potentially affect patients’ quality of life. By using ML algorithms, this study aims to predict the optimal SAVR timing and determine the enhancement in moderate-to-severe AS patient survival following surgery. This study represents a novel approach that has the potential to improve decision-making and, ultimately, improve patient outcomes. We analyze data from 176 patients with moderate-to-severe aortic stenosis who had undergone or… More >

Bioprosthetic Valve Size Selection to Optimize Aortic Valve Replacement Surgical Outcome: A Fluid-Structure Interaction Modeling Study

    Caili Li1, Dalin Tang2,*,3, Jing Yao4,*, Christopher Baird5, Haoliang Sun6, Chanjuan Gong7, Luyao Ma6, Yanjuan Zhang4, Liang Wang2, Han Yu2, Chun Yang8, Yongfeng Shao6

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.127, No.1, pp. 159-174, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.014580

Abstract Aortic valve replacement (AVR) remains a major treatment option for patients with severe aortic valve disease. Clinical outcome of AVR is strongly dependent on implanted prosthetic valve size. Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) aortic root models were constructed to investigate the effect of valve size on hemodynamics of the implanted bioprosthetic valve and optimize the outcome of AVR surgery. FSI models with 4 sizes of bioprosthetic valves (19 (No. 19), 21 (No. 21), 23 (No. 23) and 25 mm (No. 25)) were constructed. Left ventricle outflow track flow data from one patient was collected and used as model flow conditions. Anisotropic Mooney–Rivlin… More >

Right thoracotomy for aortic valve replacement in the adolescents with bicuspid aortic valve

    Raffaele Giordano1, Massimiliano Cantinotti2, Giuseppe Comentale1, Luigi Di Tommaso1, Gabriele Iannelli11, Emanuele Pilato1, Gaetano Palma1

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 162-166, 2019, DOI:10.1111/chd.12680

Abstract Background: In this study, we compared our experience about early and midterm follow‐up outcomes for right anterolateral minithoracotomy (RAMT) vs full sternot‐ omy (FS) in surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) among adolescents with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV).
Methods: Patients were retrospectively enrolled from January 2008 to December 2017. Inclusion criteria were patients with BAV who had to undergo to AVR. They were divided in two groups: RAMT and FS. The choice of RAMT was based on indi‐ vidual surgeon’s preferences or when expressly requested by patient that was in‐ formed of nonconventional approach.
    Results: We enrolled 61 patients, 23 in… More >

Bicuspid and Unicuspid Aortic Valve: Fate of Moderate/Severe Mixed Aortic Valve Disease

    Alexander C. Egbe*, Heidi M. Connolly*, Joseph T. Poterucha*,†, Carole A. Warnes*

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 24-31, 2017

Abstract Objectives. There is a paucity of data about mixed aortic valve disease (MAVD) in patients with bicuspid/unicuspid aortic valve (BAV). This study sought to describe the outcomes of patients with moderate/severe MAVD.
Methods. We queried our database for patients with BAV and moderate/severe MAVD seen between 1994 and 2013. We excluded patients with baseline New York Heart Association (NYHA) III/IV symptoms, left ventricular ejection fraction <50%, aortic dimension >50 mm, and significant disease of other valves. The purpose of the study was to determine the freedom from NYHA III/IV symptoms and aortic valve replacement (AVR).
    Results. We identified 138 patients… More >
