Abstract Cultivating salt-tolerant crops is a feasible way to effectively utilize saline-alkali land and solve the problem of underutilization of saline soils. Quinoa, a protein-comprehensive cereal in the plant kingdom, is an exceptional crop in terms of salt stress tolerance level. It seems an excellent model for the exploration of salt-tolerance mechanisms and cultivation of salt-tolerant germplasms. In this study, the seeds and seedlings of the quinoa cultivar Shelly were treated with different concentrations of NaCl solution. The physiological, biochemical characteristics and agronomic traits were investigated, and the response patterns of three salt stress-responsive genes (SSRGs) in quinoa were determined by… More >

Abstract Water is essential for the growth period of crops; however, water unavailability badly affects the growth and physiological attributes of crops, which considerably reduced the yield and yield components in crops. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar phosphorus (P) on morphological, gas exchange, biochemical traits, and phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) of maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids grown under normal as well as water deficit situations at the Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan in 2014. Two different treatments (control and P @ 8 kg ha−1 ) and four hybrids (Hycorn, 31P41, 65625,… More >

Physiological Responses of Dendrobium officinale under Exposure to Cold Stress with Two Cultivars

    Shuaishuai Zhang1, Jin Li1, Yongchang Shen1, Linda Nartey Korkor1, Qian Pu1, Jin Lu1, Balock Shakeela1, Dedong Kong2, Ou Li1, Guohong Zeng1,*, Xiufang Hu1,*

Abstract This study aimed to explore the cold tolerance of two cultivars of Dendrobium officinale (MG1, MG2) grown in different regions of China. Under -2°C incubation, cultivar MG1 remained active after 3 d, and continued to grow after returning to room temperature. However, MG2 could only maintain its activity after 2 d treatment at −2°C, and the seedlings died with the low temperature treatment time. Investigation of the characteristics of the plants grown in the south (Hangzhou) or north (Zhengzhou) of China indicated that the leaves of MG1 also had reduced stomatal density, the highest thickness, and a compact microstructure. The… More >
