Improving Brain Tumor Classification with Deep Learning Using Synthetic Data

    Muhammed Mutlu Yapici1, Rukiye Karakis2,*, Kali Gurkahraman3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.74, No.3, pp. 5049-5067, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.035584

Abstract Deep learning (DL) techniques, which do not need complex pre-processing and feature analysis, are used in many areas of medicine and achieve promising results. On the other hand, in medical studies, a limited dataset decreases the abstraction ability of the DL model. In this context, we aimed to produce synthetic brain images including three tumor types (glioma, meningioma, and pituitary), unlike traditional data augmentation methods, and classify them with DL. This study proposes a tumor classification model consisting of a Dense Convolutional Network (DenseNet121)-based DL model to prevent forgetting problems in deep networks and delay information flow between layers. Abishek Mahesh1, Deeptimaan Banerjee1, Ahona Saha1, Manas Ranjan Prusty2,*, A. Balasundaram2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.74, No.3, pp. 5967-5982, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.033920

Abstract A brain tumor is the uncharacteristic progression of tissues in the brain. These are very deadly, and if it is not diagnosed at an early stage, it might shorten the affected patient’s life span. Hence, their classification and detection play a critical role in treatment. Traditional Brain tumor detection is done by biopsy which is quite challenging. It is usually not preferred at an early stage of the disease. The detection involves Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which is essential for evaluating the tumor. This paper aims to identify and detect brain tumors based on their location in the brain. Brain Tumor Segmentation in Multimodal MRI Using U-Net Layered Structure

Muhammad Javaid Iqbal1, Muhammad Waseem Iqbal2, Muhammad Anwar3,*, Muhammad Murad Khan4, Abd Jabar Nazimi5, Mohammad Nazir Ahmad6

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.74, No.3, pp. 5267-5281, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.033024

Abstract The brain tumour is the mass where some tissues become old or damaged, but they do not die or not leave their space. Mainly brain tumour masses occur due to malignant masses. These tissues must die so that new tissues are allowed to be born and take their place. Tumour segmentation is a complex and time-taking problem due to the tumour’s size, shape, and appearance variation. Manually finding such masses in the brain by analyzing Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) is a crucial task for experts and radiologists. Radiologists could not work for large volume images simultaneously, and many errors occurred… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.74, No.3, pp. 6775-6788, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.030814

Abstract Biomedical image processing acts as an essential part of several medical applications in supporting computer aided disease diagnosis. Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) is a commonly utilized imaging tool used to save glioma for clinical examination. Biomedical image segmentation plays a vital role in healthcare decision making process which also helps to identify the affected regions in the MRI. Though numerous segmentation models are available in the literature, it is still needed to develop effective segmentation models for BT. This study develops a salp swarm algorithm with multi-level thresholding based brain tumor segmentation (SSAMLT-BTS) model. The presented SSAMLT-BTS model initially employs… More >

Brain Tumor: Hybrid Feature Extraction Based on UNet and 3DCNN

    Sureshkumar Rajagopal1, Tamilvizhi Thanarajan2,*, Youseef Alotaibi3, Saleh Alghamdi4

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.45, No.2, pp. 2093-2109, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.032488

Abstract Automated segmentation of brain tumors using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data is critical in the analysis and monitoring of disease development. As a result, gliomas are aggressive and diverse tumors that may be split into intra-tumoral groups by using effective and accurate segmentation methods. It is intended to extract characteristics from an image using the Gray Level Co-occurrence (GLC) matrix feature extraction method described in the proposed work. Using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which are commonly used in biomedical image segmentation, CNNs have significantly improved the precision of the state-of-the-art segmentation of a brain tumor. Using two segmentation networks, a… More >

Novel Framework of Segmentation 3D MRI of Brain Tumors

    Ibrahim Mahmoud El-Henawy1, Mostafa Elbaz2, Zainab H. Ali3,*, Noha Sakr4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.74, No.2, pp. 3489-3502, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.033356

Abstract Medical image segmentation is a crucial process for computer-aided diagnosis and surgery. Medical image segmentation refers to portioning the images into small, disjointed parts for simplifying the processes of analysis and examination. Rician and speckle noise are different types of noise in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that affect the accuracy of the segmentation process negatively. Therefore, image enhancement has a significant role in MRI segmentation. This paper proposes a novel framework that uses 3D MRI images from Kaggle and applies different diverse models to remove Rician and speckle noise using the best possible noise-free image. The proposed techniques consider the… More >

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 127-143, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.032391

Abstract The brain tumor is an abnormal and hysterical growth of brain tissues, and the leading cause of death affected patients worldwide. Even in this technology-based arena, brain tumor images with proper labeling and acquisition still have a problem with the accurate and reliable generation of realistic images of brain tumors that are completely different from the original ones. The artificially created medical image data would help improve the learning ability of physicians and other computer-aided systems for the generation of augmented data. To overcome the highlighted issue, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) deep learning technique in which two neural networks… More >

    S. Keerthi1,*, P. Santhi2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 1173-1188, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.029959

Abstract The objective of this research is to examine the use of feature selection and classification methods for distinguishing different types of brain tumors. The brain tumor is characterized by an anomalous proliferation of brain cells that can either be benign or malignant. Most tumors are misdiagnosed due to the variability and complexity of lesions, which reduces the survival rate in patients. Diagnosis of brain tumors via computer vision algorithms is a challenging task. Segmentation and classification of brain tumors are currently one of the most essential surgical and pharmaceutical procedures. Traditional brain tumor identification techniques require manual segmentation or handcrafted… More >
