    ZHENGHONG FENG1, BING GAO1, YU GAO2, JIANHUI WU1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.7, pp. 1571-1582, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.029106

Abstract Background:Potentilla sericea is a heavy metal hyperaccumulator landscaping plant. MYB transcription factors play an important role in regulating plant stress response to adversity. However, there are few studies on MYB transcription factors in stress tolerance in Potentilla sericea. In this study, the gene was successfully cloned from Potentilla sericea. Methods: Bioinformatic analysis and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) methods were used to evaluate this gene. The transgenic A. thaliana were obtained by flower dipping and the gene function was identified by determining physiological indicators under cadmium stress. Results: The open reading frame of is 942 bp, which encodes 313 amino acids… More >

Application of Silicon and Selenium in Rice for Reducing Cadmium Stress

Mohammad Reza Boorboori, Husen Qiu, Jieyun Liu, Haiyang Zhang*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 1873-1886, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.027924

Abstract Rice is an essential part of the human diet in most parts of the world; On the other hand, the industrialization of societies has led to pollution of the environment, including heavy metal contamination of soil and water, which negatively affects rice production and quality. Therefore, finding ways to increase the yield and quality of this strategic crop seems essential. Several studies have been conducted in recent decades to find effective and inexpensive solutions to reduce the adverse effects of heavy metals in rice fields. Due to the negative effect of cadmium pollution on rice quality and yield, the current… More >

    Abstract

The current work was performed to know the impact of cadmium (Cd) toxicity on two different genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) namely Pusa-BG1053 and Pusa-BG372. Cadmium was applied in the form of cadmium chloride (CdCl2), in varying levels, 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg Cd kg-1 soil. Plant growth as well as physiological attributes were decreased with increasing concentration of Cd. Both genotypes showed the maximum and significant reduction at the maximum dose of Cd (100 mg Cd kg-1 soil). Results of this study proved that the genotype Pusa-BG1053 was more tolerant and showed a lower decline in… More >

Microalgae Improve the Photosynthetic Performance of Rice Seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) under Physiological Conditions and Cadmium Stress

    Ekaterina Yotsova1, Martin Stefanov1, Georgi Rashkov1, Margarita Kouzmanova2, Anelia Dobrikova1, Emilia Apostolova1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.7, pp. 1365-1380, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.020566

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris on the rice seedlings at physiological conditions and under cadmium (Cd) stress. We examined the effects of C. vulgaris in the nutrient solution on rice seedlings grown hydroponically in the presence and the absence of 150 μM CdCl2, using the low (77 K) temperature and pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence, P700 photooxidation measurements, photochemical activities of both photosystems, kinetic parameters of oxygen evolution, oxidative stress markers (MDA, H2O2 and proline), pigment content, growth parameters and Cd accumulation. Data revealed that the application C. vulgaris not… More >

Nitric Oxide Alleviates Photochemical Damage Induced by Cadmium Stress in Pea Seedlings

    Ekhlaque A. Khan1,2,*, Hamdino M. I. Ahmed3, Meena Misra1, Pallavi Sharma1,4, Amarendra N. Misra1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.5, pp. 959-973, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.018708

Abstract Cadmium (Cd), a life threatening hazardous heavy metal is abundant in nature. Cd amounts are greater in leaves than other plant parts, and it shows considerable effects on photosynthesis. Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical present in living organisms, is now known as an important signaling molecule playing various physiological processes in plants. In this study, the possible ameliorative effect of NO on photosynthesis was examined on pea seedlings grown under Cd stress. Results showed that chlorophyll, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, photochemical efficiency of Photosystem II and Photosystem I decreased, and Fo and non-photochemical parameters for PSII… More >

Physiological responses of Allium cepa var. agrogarum L. plants to Cadmium stress

Wang QL, DH Liu, JY Yue

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.85, pp. 270-282, 2016, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2016.85.270

Abstract This study aimed to determine the effects of different Cd concentrations (0, 1, 10, 100, and 300 μM CdCl2) on Allium plantlets. To achieve this goal, we examined the (1) dynamics of Cd2+ flux in the rhizosphere, (2) partitioning of Cd between roots and leaves, (3) formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), (4) levels of H2O2 and chlorophyll, and (5) translocation of several macro- and micronutrients. A strong net Cd2+ influx was observed in the root apex after exposure to 100 μM Cd for 24 h. Exposure to either 1 or 10 μM Cd for 96 h presented no evident… More >

Effects of Melatonin on Growth, Physiology and Gene Expression in Rice Seedlings Under Cadmium Stress

    Xiachen Lv1,#, Yunxia Fang1,#, Lantian Zhang1, Weiyi Zhang1, Ling Xu1, Jingjin Han1, Bailing Jin2, Xian Zhang1, Xiaoqin Zhang1,*, Dawei Xue1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.2, pp. 91-100, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.06622

Abstract Melatonin (MLT) is a hormonal substance found in many organisms and can improve plant stress resistance. In this study, the japonica rice variety Y32 and indica rice variety NJ6 were cultivated in hydroponics under different concentrations of CdCl2 at the two-leaf stage. The growth, physiological and biochemical responses of the seedlings and the expression of cadmium (Cd)-related genes under exogenous melatonin (MLT) treatment were assessed. The results indicated that Cd stress destroyed the dynamic balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and removal, resulting in ROS accumulation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and impaired growth and development. Following the application of exogenous… More >
