    Muhammad Farooq Siddique1, Saif Ullah1, Jong-Myon Kim1,2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.84, No.2, pp. 3577-3603, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2025.065326 - 03 July 2025

Abstract Centrifugal Pumps (CPs) are critical machine components in many industries, and their efficient operation and reliable Fault Diagnosis (FD) are essential for minimizing downtime and maintenance costs. This paper introduces a novel FD method to improve both the accuracy and reliability of detecting potential faults in such pumps. The proposed method combines Wavelet Coherent Analysis (WCA) and Stockwell Transform (S-transform) scalograms with Sobel and non-local means filters, effectively capturing complex fault signatures from vibration signals. Using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for feature extraction, the method transforms these scalograms into image inputs, enabling the recognition of More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.4, pp. 891-938, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.059903 - 06 May 2025

Abstract This paper investigates the start-up and shutdown phases of a five-bladed closed-impeller centrifugal pump through experimental analysis, capturing the temporal evolution of its hydraulic performances. The study also predicts the transient characteristics of the pump under non-rated operating conditions to assess the accuracy of various machine learning methods in forecasting its instantaneous performance. Results indicate that the pump’s transient behavior in power-frequency mode markedly differs from that in frequency-conversion mode. Specifically, the power-frequency mode achieves steady-state values faster and exhibits smaller fluctuations before stabilization compared to the other mode. During the start-up phase, as… More >

    Dongwei Wang1,*, Wensheng Ma2, Weiguo Zhao1, Rui Cao2, Youchao Yang2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.4, pp. 877-890, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.055220 - 06 May 2025

Abstract Cavitation is an unavoidable phenomenon in the operation of centrifugal pumps. Prolonged cavitation can cause significant damage to the components of the flow channel, and in severe cases, it may even interfere with the normal energy exchange processes within the pump. Therefore, effective monitoring of cavitation in centrifugal pumps is crucial. This article presents a study that approaches the issue from an acoustic perspective, using experimental methods to gather and analyze acoustic data at the inlet and outlet of centrifugal pumps across various flow rates, with hydrophones as the primary measuring instruments. Results show that… More >

    Tianpeng Li1,*, Yujun Duan2, Qianghu Ji3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 623-644, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.053862 - 01 April 2025

Abstract A centrifugal pump with a specific speed ns = 67 is considered in this study to investigate the impact of blade cutting (at the outlet edge) on the fluid-induced noise, while keeping all the other geometric parameters unchanged. The required unsteady numerical calculations are conducted by applying the RNG k-ε turbulence model with the volute dipole being used as the sound source. The results indicate that the internal pressure energy of the centrifugal pump essentially depends on the blade passing frequency and its low-frequency harmonic frequency. Moreover, the pressure pulsation distribution directly affects the noise caused More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.141, No.2, pp. 1111-1136, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.055399 - 27 September 2024

Abstract The fluid’s viscosity significantly affects the performance of a centrifugal pump. The entropy production method and leakage are employed to analyze the performance changes under various viscosities by numerical simulation and validated by experiments. The results showed that increasing viscosity reduces both the pump head and efficiency. In addition, the optimal operating point shifts to the left. Leakage is influenced by vortex distribution in the front chamber and boundary layer thickness in wear-ring clearance, leading to an initial increase and subsequent decrease in leakage with increasing viscosity. The total entropy production inside the pump rises More >

Abstract In order to obtain the transient characteristics of a low-speed centrifugal pump during the start-up and shutdown stages, dedicated experimental tests were conducted with eight different valve opening conditions. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to reveal the linear correlation between variables. According to the results, the stable rotational speed decreases with increasing valve opening (rotational speed decreases from approximately 1472 to 1453 r/min), while the stable shaft power exhibits an increasing trend (shaft power increases from approximately 0.242 to 0.390 kW). The stable time and zeroing time of each parameter during start-up and shutdown More >

    Abdourahamane Salifou Adam1, Hatem Mrad1, Haykel Marouani2,*, Yasser Fouad3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.137, No.3, pp. 2845-2865, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.030777 - 03 August 2023

Abstract A high percentage of failure in pump elements originates from fatigue. This study focuses on the discharge section behavior, made of ductile iron, under dynamic load. An experimental protocol is established to collect the strain under pressurization and depressurization tests at specific locations. These experimental results are used to formulate the ultimate pressure expression function of the strain and the lateral surface of the discharge section and to validate finite element modeling. Fe-Safe is then used to assess the fatigue life cycle using different types of fatigue criteria (Coffin-Manson, Morrow, Goodman, and Soderberg). When the… More >
