Direct Numerical Simulation of Electroconvection near an Ion-Selective Membrane Under Magnetic Field

    Jinxiang Cai1, Gaojin Li1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09833

Abstract We study the effect of magnetic field on the electro-hydrodynamics of ion transport in a liquid electrolyte near an ion-selective membrane using direct numerical simulation. Ion transport across the ion selective membrane plays an essential role in many electro-hydrodynamic and electro-microfluidic systems. Above a critical voltage, electroconvective instability occurs near the membrane surface, causing vortical flows in liquid electrolyte which enhances the mixing of cations and anions, increases the ion transport efficiency and causes current fluctuations. When the system is under a magnetic field, the Lorentz force generated by the ion movement can significantly change the flow of electrolyte solution.… More >

INFLUENCE OF CONVECTIVE BOUNDARY CONDITION ON NONLINEAR THERMAL CONVECTION FLOW OF A MICROPOLAR FLUID SATURATED POROUS MEDIUM WITH HOMOGENEOUS-HETEROGENEOUS REACTIONS

    Chetteti RamReddya,†, Teegala Pradeepaa

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-10, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.6

Abstract A numerical approach has been used to analyze the effects of homogeneous-heterogeneous reaction and nonlinear density temperature variation over a vertical plate in an incompressible micropolar fluid flow saturated Darcy porous medium. In addition, convective boundary condition is incorporated in a micropolar fluid model. The similarity representation for the set of partial differential equations is attained by applying Lie group transformations. The resulting non-dimensional equations are worked out numerically by spectral quasi-linearization method. Less temperature and wall couple stress coefficient, but more velocity, skin friction, species concentration, and heat transfer rate are noticed by enhancing the nonlinear convection parameter. Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-11, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.40

Abstract A theoretical and computational study of the magneto hydrodynamic flow and free convection heat transfer in an electro-conductive polymer on the external surface of a vertical permeable cone under radial magnetic field is presented. Thermal and velocity (hydrodynamic) slip are considered at the vertical permeable cone surface via modified boundary conditions. The Williamson viscoelastic model is employed which is representative of certain industrial polymers. The non-dimensional, transformed boundary layer equations for momentum and energy are solved with the second order accurate implicit Keller box finite difference method under appropriate boundary conditions. Validation of the numerical solutions is achieved via benchmarking… More >

MAGNETOCONVECTION AND IRREVERSIBILITY PHENOMENA WITHIN A LID DRIVEN CAVITY FILLED WITH LIQUID METAL UNDER MAGNETIC FIELD

    Fakher Oueslatia,b,†, Brahim Ben-Beyab

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-11, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.38

Abstract The current study deals with a numerical investigation of magnetoconvection and entropy generation within a lid driven square cavity subject to uniform magnetic field and filled with liquid metal. Effects of multiple parameters namely; the Prandtl, Hartmann and Richardson numbers were predicted and analyzed using a numerical methodology based on the finite volume method and a full multigrid technique. The numerical outcome of the present study shows that, the enhancement of Hartmann number declines the heat transfer rate for all liquid metals considered. Moreover, it is observed that augmenting the Richardson number leads to acceleration of the flow with a… More >

COMPUTATIONAL INVESTIGATION OF DOUBLE-DIFFUSIVE MIXED CONVECTIVE FLOW IN AN ENCLOSED SQUARE CAVITY WITH SORET EFFECT

    C. G. Mohan, A. Satheesh*

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-13, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.36

Abstract In this study, a two-dimensional steady state double-diffusive mixed convective flow in a square cavity with Soret effect is presented. The numerical investigation is considered with two different conditions, (a) top and bottom walls move with same velocity (Uo) towards right and (b) top wall moves towards right and bottom wall moves towards left with the same velocity (Uo). The left and right walls remain stationary. The top and bottom walls are adiabatic; the left wall is maintained at high temperature and concentration. The right wall is maintained at low temperature and concentration. Governing equations are solved by finite volume… More >

3D NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON LAMINAR FORCED CONVECTION AND HEAT TRANSFER IN A CIRCULAR TUBE INSERTED WITH RIGHT TRIANGULAR WAVY SURFACES

    Withada Jedsadaratanachaia, Amnart Boonloib,*

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-8, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.35

Abstract Numerical investigations on flow and heat transfer characteristics in a circular tube heat exchanger inserted with right triangular wavy surfaces are reported. The configurations of the wavy surfaces; incline and V-shape, are studied with flow attack angles of 30o, 45o and 60o for the Reynolds numbers, Re = 100 – 2000. The numerical results are compared with the smooth circular tube. The mechanisms on flow and heat transfer in the tube heat exchanger with the wavy surface are presented. As the results, the wavy surface can generate the vortex flow and impinging flow through the test section that helps to… More >

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-9, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.33

Abstract A computational study has been made for a three dimensional double diffusive convection with molten Pb-Sn by using finite volume method. In this work, two vertical walls have different temperature and different concentration while remaining walls are adiabatic. Buoyancy ratio, which changes between N = -0.1 and -10, is the main governing parameter during work. Other parameters are taken as fixed with Pr = 0.02, Le = 7500 and Ra = 5×103 . It is found that changing of buoyancy parameter becomes more effective on heat transfer than that of mass transfer. More >

TWO DIFFERENT APPROACHES FOR ANALYSING HEAT TRANSFER IN A POWER-LAW FLUID FLOW BETWEEN PARALLEL PLATES

    Fábio A. Caldasa,*, Paulo M. Coelhob,†

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-8, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.32

Abstract In this paper, Nusselt numbers for a power-law fluid in a fully developed laminar flow between parallel plates with constant, and different, wall heat fluxes in the presence of dissipation effects are presented. The Nusselt numbers values were obtained following two different approaches. One is the “classical” approach, based on a single bulk temperature, and this approach is used in this work to obtain for the first time generic analytical expressions for Nusselt numbers. In the new approach, different bulk temperatures are used for each Nu′ determination, one bulk temperature for each side of the location of the temperature profile… More >

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-10, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.31

Abstract A finite volume based three dimensional numerical analysis is performed on the effect of angle of inclination of the external magnetic force on entropy generation due to natural convection inside the cubical cavity filled with CNT - water nanofluid. The governing equations are numerically solved by vorticity - vector potential formalism. The vertical walls of enclosure are differentially heated and the horizontal walls are adiabatic. The effect due to Rayleigh number (103 ≤ Ra ≤ 105), Hartmann number (0 ≤ Ha ≤ 100), angle of inclination of external magnetic field (0° ≤ α ≤ 90°) and volumetric fraction (0 ≤… More >

    R. Srinivasa Rajua,*, G. Jithender Reddyb , G. Anithaa

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-12, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.27

Abstract In the present study, consider an influence of chemical reaction on an unsteady MHD free convective, viscous dissipative Casson fluid flow over a vertically inclined plate in presence of magnetic field, heat and mass transfer. The modeling equations are converted to dimensionless equations, then solved through finite element technique. Computations were performed to analyze the behavior of fluid velocity, temperature, concentration and induced magnetic field on the inclined vertical plate with the variation of emerging physical parameters. Compared the present results with earlier reported studies for correctness and applicability of finite element technique. This model may be useful in view… More >
