    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 193-216, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.046832

Abstract This study investigates the performance of a natural draft dry cooling tower group in crosswind conditions through numerical analysis. A comprehensive three-dimensional model is developed to analyze the steady-state and dynamic behavior of the towers. The impact of wind speed and direction on heat rejection capacity and flow patterns is examined. Results indicate that crosswinds negatively affect the overall heat transfer capacity, with higher crosswind speeds leading to decreased heat transfer. Notably, wind direction plays a significant role, particularly at 0°. Moreover, tower response time increases with higher crosswind speeds due to increased turbulence and the formation of vortices. ENERGY EFFECTIVENESS OF SIMULTANEOUS HEAT AND MASS EXCHANGE DEVICES

    G. Prakash Narayana, Karan H. Mistrya, Mostafa H. Sharqawya, Syed M. Zubairb, John H. Lienhard Va,†

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 1-13, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.2.3001

Abstract Simultaneous heat and mass exchange devices such as cooling towers, humidifiers and dehumidifiers are widely used in the power generation, desalination, air conditioning, and refrigeration industries. For design and rating of these components it is useful to define their performance by an effectiveness. In this paper, several different effectiveness definitions that have been used in literature are critically reviewed and an energy based effectiveness which can be applied to all types of heat and mass exchangers is defined. The validity and the limitations of the various effectiveness definitions are demonstrated by way of several examples including direct and indirect contact,… More >

Abstract A review is conducted about the application of the evaporative cooling technology in thermal power plants. Different case studies are considered, namely, evaporative air conditioners, evaporative cooling in direct air-cooled systems, gas turbine inlet cooling, wet cooling towers, and hybrid cooling towers with a crosswind effect. Some effort is provided to describe the advantages related to direct evaporative cooling when it is applied in thermal power plants and illustrate the research gaps, which have not been filled yet. In particular, typical case studies are intentionally used to compare the cooling performances when direct evaporative cooling is implemented in different types… More > Graphic Abstract

Spray Effect on the Thermal Performances of a Dry Cooling Tower

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.9, pp. 2289-2304, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.026707

Abstract Pre-cooling the inlet air of a dry cooling tower by means of a spray can improve the tower performance during periods of high temperature. To study the spray effect on the thermal performance of natural draft dry cooling towers (NDDCTs), in this study 3-D numerical simulations of such a process have been conducted using Fluent 16.2 (a two-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach). The considered NDDCT is 120 m high and only half system is simulated due to its structural symmetry. Three different spray strategies have been investigated at a typical crosswind speed of 4 m/s, which is the most frequent wind speed. The… More > Graphic Abstract

Experimental Study on the Resistance and Splash Performances of Water Collecting Devices for Mechanical Draft Cooling Towers

    Guoqing Long1, Guogang Zhang1, Qi Zhang2, Cuilin Zhao2, Suoying He2,*, Fengzhong Sun2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.7, pp. 1789-1801, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.026559

Abstract In recent years, water collecting systems, with the associated advantages of energy saving and noise reduction, have become the foundation for the development of a scheme to optimize the structure of cooling towers. To explore the feasibility of this approach for mechanical draft cooling towers, a small-scale experimental device has been built to study the resistance and splash performances of three U-type water collecting devices (WCDs) for different water flow rates and wind speeds. The experimental results show that within the considered ranges of wind speed and water flow rate, the pressure drop of the different WCDs can vary significantly.… More > Graphic Abstract

Collapse Simulation and Response Assessment of a Large Cooling Tower Subjected to Strong Earthquake Ground Motions

    Tiancan Huang1, Hao Zhou2,*, Hamid Beiraghi3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.123, No.2, pp. 691-715, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09046

Abstract Large cooling towers in thermal power plants and nuclear power plants are likely to suffer from strong earthquakes during service periods. The resulting destructions of the cooling towers would endanger the power plants and threaten the security of the related areas. It is important to use effective means to evaluate the safety status of the cooling towers and guide further precautions as well as retrofitting efforts. This paper is therefore focused on an elaborate numerical investigation to the earthquake-induced collapses of a large cooling tower structure. A complete numerical work for simulation of material failure, component fracture, structural buckling and… More >
