A Practical Engineering Approach to the Design and Manufacturing of a mini kW BladeWind Turbine: Definition, optimization and CFD Analysis

    G. Frulla1, P. Gili1, M. Visone2, V. D’Oriano2,3, M. Lappa4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 257-277, 2015, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2015.011.257

Abstract A practical engineering approach to the design of a 60 kW wind generator with improved performances is presented. The proposed approach relies on the use of a specific, "ad hoc'' developed software, OPTIWR (Optimization Software), expressly conceived to define an "optimum'' rotor configuration in the framework of the blade-element-momentum theory. Starting from an initial input geometric configuration (corresponding to an already existing 50 kW turbine) and for given values of the wind velocity Vwind and of the advance ratio X = Vwind/ΩR (where Ω is the blade rotational speed and R is the propeller radius), this software is used to… More >

Design, Optimization and CFD Simulation of a Nozzle for Industrial Cleaning Processes based on High-Pressure Water Jets

    Shuce Zhang1, Xueheng Tao1,2,3, Jinshi Lu1,2, Xuejun Wang1,2, ZhenhuaZeng4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 143-155, 2015, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2015.011.143

Abstract Three different kinds of nozzles, normally used in industrial processes for the cleaning of material surface by means of water jets at high pressure (a Cylindrical Contracting, a Taper Contracting and Stepped nozzle), are numerically simulated with the express intent to optimize the related efficiency (cleaning effectiveness). Although some of them are found to display interesting properties, simulation results indicate that a helix nozzle displays the best jetting performances. It is shown that, as compared to improvements obtained by simply changing the jetting angle, revolving the fluid released from the helix nozzle can be used to create a grinding wheel… More >

Design Optimization of a Conical Annular Centrifugal Contractor

    M. N. Noui-Mehidi1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 141-152, 2011, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2011.007.141

Abstract The present work is concerned with a numerical study of the performance of a conical annular centrifugal contractor through the analysis of the flow properties when the apex angle is changed for different imposed axial flows. The calculations revealed the advantage of using conical annular centrifugal contractors compared to the cylindrical annular centrifuges. The study is conducted by a comparison analysis of the hydrodynamics of fluid flow in both conical and cylindrical contractors where moderate axial flows are imposed. In both systems the outer body is stationary while the inner rotor is maintained at constant speed. The calculations are achieved… More >

Fuel Cell Performance Augmentation: Gas Flow Channel Design for Fuel Optimization

    A. B. Mahmud Hasan1,2, S.M. Guo1, M.A. Wahab1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.5, No.4, pp. 399-410, 2009, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2009.005.399

Abstract The effects of gas flow channel design were studied experimentally for increasing fuel cell performance and fuel optimization. Three types of gas flow channels (serpentine, straight and interdigitated) were designed on the basis of water flooding due to electrochemical reactions, electro-osmotic drag, etc. Experimental results indicate that the best cell performance can be obtained by arranging interdigitated gas flow channel at the anode side and serpentine gas flow channel at the cathode side. Detailed analysis on complex two phase water generation and electrochemical phenomena behind those results were analyzed in this work to find out the best design for gas… More >

A Fin Design Problem in Determining the Optimum Shape of Non-Fourier Spine and Longitudinal Fins

    Cheng-Hung Huang1, Hsin-Hsien Wu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.5, No.3, pp. 197-212, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.005.197

Abstract The conjugate gradient method (CGM) is applied in an inverse fin design problem in estimating the optimum shapes for the non-Fourier spine and longitudinal fins based on the desired fin efficiency and fin volume at the specified time. One of the advantages in using CGM in the inverse design problem lies in that it can handle problems having a huge number of design parameters easily and converges very fast.
The validity of using CGM in solving the present inverse design problem is justified by performing the numerical experiments. Several test cases involving different design fin efficiency, design fin volume, specified… More >

    Dongsheng Li1,2, Ghazal Saheli1, Moe Khaleel2, Hamid Garmestani1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 31-42, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2006.004.031

Abstract A multiscale model based on statistical continuum mechanics is proposed to predict the mechanical and electrical properties of heterogeneous porous media. This model is applied within the framework of microstructure sensitive design (MSD) to guide the design of the microstructure in porous lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) fuel cell electrode. To satisfy the property requirement and compatibility, porosity and its distribution can be adjusted under the guidance of MSD to achieve optimized microstructure. More >

A Physical Layer Algorithm for Estimation of Number of Tags in UHF RFID Anti-Collision Design

    Zhong Huang1, Jian Su2, Guangjun Wen1, Wenxian Zheng3, Chu Chu1, Yijun Zhang4,*, Yibo Zhang5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.61, No.1, pp. 399-408, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.05876

Abstract A priori knowledge of the number of tags is crucial for anti-collision protocols in slotted UHF RFID systems. The number of tags is used to decide optimal frame length in dynamic frame slotted ALOHA (DFSA) and to adjust access probability in random access protocols. Conventional researches estimate the number of tags in MAC layer based on statistics of empty slots, collided slots and successful slots. Usually, a collision detection algorithm is employed to determine types of time slots. Only three types are distinguished because of lack of ability to detect the number of tags in single time slot. In this… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.61, No.1, pp. 119-128, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.05274

Abstract For enhancing the control effectiveness, we firstly design a fuzzy logic based sliding mode controller (FSMC) for nonlinear crane systems. On basis of overhead crane dynamic characteristic, the sliding mode function with regard to trolley position and payload angle. Additionally, in order to eliminate the chattering problem of sliding mode control, the fuzzy logic theory is adopted to soften the control performance. Moreover, aiming at the FSMC parameter setting problem, a DE algorithm based optimization scheme is proposed for enhancing the control performance. Finally, by implementing the computer simulation, the DE based FSMC can effectively tackle the overhead crane sway… More >
