Abstract Photobiomodulation (PBM) has been shown to delay the pathological process of heart failure, but the exact mechanism of action is not clear. Mitochondria occupy one-third of the volume of mammalian cardiomyocytes (CMs) and are central transport stations for CM energy metabolism. Therefore, in this study, we explored the regulatory effects of 630 nm light-emitting diodes (LED-Red) on the mitochondria of CMs. The results show that LED-Red-based PBM promotes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis by upregulating the expression of glycolipid metabolizing enzymes. Correspondingly, there was an improvement in the activity of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), a key enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport… More >

Conditional Probability Approach for Fault Detection in Photovoltaic Energy Farms

    Nagy I. Elkalashy1,*, Ibrahim B. M. Taha2

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.42, No.3, pp. 1109-1120, 2022, DOI:10.32604/csse.2022.023509

Abstract Detection of electric faults in photovoltaic (PV) farms enhances a sustainable service continuity of farm energy generation. In this paper, a probabilistic function is introduced to detect the faults in the PV farms. The conditional probability functions are adopted to detect different fault conditions such as internal string faults, string-to-string faults, and string-to-negative terminal faults. As the diodes are important to make the PV farms in-service safely during the faults, the distribution currents of these faults are evaluated with different concepts of diode consideration as well as without considering any diode installation. This part of the study enhances the diode… More >

Effects of Various Light-Emitting Diode (LEd) Wavelengths on the Growth of Scenedesmus Obliquus Fachb-12 and Accumulation of Astaxanthin

    Huabing Xu1,†, Xiaojuan Liu1,†, Zhiping Mei1, Jinchun Lin1, Stephan Aaron2 and Hong Du1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.3, pp. 335-348, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.06880

Abstract Given the central role of light in the algal photosynthesis, respiration, cell division, growth and the accumulation of value products, the effects of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) light wavelengths (blue, white, red and green) were studied in Scenedesmus obliquus. Biomass, residual nutrient amount, soluble protein, astaxanthin and reactive oxygen species, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) activity were analyzed to determine the effects of different monochromatic light wavelengths via biochemical methods. The results showed that blue light wavelength is the optimal light wavelength for phosphorus removal efficiency and the accumulation of biomass and astaxanthin in S. obliquus. Meanwhile, high… More >

Computational Quantum Mechanics Simulation on the Photonic Properties of Group-III Nitride Clusters

    Che-Wun Hong1,2, Chia-Yun Tsai1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.67, No.2, pp. 79-94, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.067.079

Abstract This paper describes the quantum mechanical simulation on the photonic properties of group-III nitride clusters, whose bulk types are common materials for light emitting diodes (LEDs). In order to emit different colors of light using the same semiconductor materials, it is possible to vary the band gap by controlling the quantum dot sizes or doping a third atom theoretically. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to analyze a set of binary (GaN)n (3≤n≤32) and ternary InxGa1-xN (0≤x≤0.375) clusters to study their photonic characteristics. The ground state structures are optimized to calculate the binding energies using the time-independent DFT. Then… More >
