    D. Crivelli1, M. Guagliano2, A. Monici3

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.8, No.2, pp. 177-192, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2012.008.177

Abstract Pultrusion is a process for manufacturing uniform section composite profiles, which allows to obtain structural elements of virtually any length. The use of E-glass fiber allows to obtain a material with a good rigidity-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratio; these features allowed to use these materials in civil structures, such as poles for anti-noise panels and public lighting, also thanks to their insulating properties. However, the knowledge on the damage development of these materials is still uncertain, and this is slowing down their development.
For these reasons, an experimental study on pultruded materials aimed at identifying the damage modes has been developed.… More >

    Xia Li1,2, Peifeng Niu1,*, Jianping Liu2, Qing Liu2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.1, pp. 29-57, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.04020

Abstract An improved teaching-learning-based optimization (I-TLBO) algorithm is proposed to adjust the parameters of extreme learning machine with parallel layer perception (PELM), and a well-generalized I-TLBO-PELM model is obtained to build the model of NOX emissions of a boiler. In the I-TLBO algorithm, there are four major highlights. Firstly, a quantum initialized population by using the qubits on Bloch sphere replaces a randomly initialized population. Secondly, two kinds of angles in Bloch sphere are generated by using cube chaos mapping. Thirdly, an adaptive control parameter is added into the teacher phase to speed up the convergent speed. And then, according to… More >

Abstract The fuel-flexible, low-NOx (Nitrogen oxides) combustor task of the Environmentally Resonsible Aviation (ERA) project is to develop a low emissions combustor capable of meeting the Landing and Take-Off (LTO) NOx emissions reduction while reducing aircraft fuel burn by 50% without negatively impacting other emissions and achieving perceived noise levels 42 dB below stage 4 limits. The low emissions combustor should be capable of meeting the mid-term LTO NOx goal of 75% reduction from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard adopted at Committee on Aviation Environment Protection (CAEP 6). In addition to NOx and Other emissions performance, the combustor must… More >

Research on CO Pollution Control of Motor Vehicle Exhaust

    Weiwei Liu1, *, Yang Tang2, Fei Yang2, Jin Wang3

    Journal on Internet of Things, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 71-76, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jiot.2019.05946

Abstract Carbon monoxide (CO) is harmful to our health, and even causes death. The main source of CO is automobile exhaust. Therefore, this article determines that CO is the emission factor, and finally the evaluation model is established. The model provides an important basis for the highway construction project design, traffic management, environmental pollution control, energy saving, environmental evaluation and so on. Compared with the traditional method that calculates the road traffic volume through the air emissions model, according to the total amount of air pollution control, this paper builds the emission diffusion model, which calculates the road traffic volume by… More >

Natural Additive for Reducing Formaldehyde Emissions in Urea-Formaldehyde Resins

    Flávio Pereira1, João Pereira2, Nádia Paiva3, João Ferra3, Jorge Manuel Martins1,4, Fernão D. Magalhães1, and Luísa Carvalho1,4*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 41-46, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634128

Abstract This work studies the use of soy protein as a natural formaldehyde scavenger in wood particleboard production. The protein is incorporated in two forms: a) as a powder, during the blending process of wood particles with urea-formaldehyde binder resin, and b) as an aqueous solution, added at different times during resin synthesis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the signifi cance level of two effects (amount of added soy and time of addition) on internal bond strength, thickness swelling, and formaldehyde content of the resulting panels. The results showed that soy protein can contribute to decrease the formaldehyde… More >

Loose Gangues Backfill Body’s Acoustic Emissions Rules During Compaction Test: Based on Solid Backfill Mining

    Junmeng Li1, Yanli Huang1, Wenyue Qi1, Guoqiang Kong1, Tianqi Song1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.115, No.1, pp. 85-103, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2018.115.085

Abstract In fully mechanized solid backfilling mining (FMSBM), the loose gangues backfill body (LGBB) that filled into the goaf becomes the main body of bearing the overburden load. The deformation resistance of LGBB is critical for controlling overburden movement and surface subsidence. During the process of load bearing, LGBB will experience grain crushing, which has a significant effect on its deformation resistance. Gangues block will be accompanied with obvious acoustic emissions (AE) features in process of slipping, flipping and damaging. Under confined compression test, monitoring the AE parameters of LGBB can reveal the impact mechanism of grain crushing on LGBB deformation.… More >

Precise Evaluation of Vehicles Emission in Urban Traffic Using Multi-agent-based Traffic Simulator MATES

    Hideki Fujii1, Shinobu Yoshimura1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.88, No.1, pp. 49-64, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.088.049

Abstract Recently, global warming issues have been discussed all over the world. Of the total amount of CO2 emitted in Japan, a transportation sector is responsible for 20%. In the transportation sector, 90% of the emission is due to road traffic. This amount must be reduced drastically to realize a low-carbon society. To do so, various measures have been discussed, and the effects of the measures must be estimated quantitatively. In conventional measurement methods, the amount of vehicle emission is simply calculated by multiplying travel distance or gasoline consumption by a specified emission coefficient. Such an approach neglects the effects of… More >

Select Applications of Carbon Nanotubes: Field-Emission Devices and Electromechanical Sensors

    Amitesh Maiti1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.3, No.5, pp. 589-600, 2002, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2002.003.589

Abstract Atomistic modeling and simulations are becoming increasingly important in the design of new devices at the nanoscale. In particular, theoretical modeling of carbon nanotubes have provided useful insight and guidance to many experimental efforts. To this end, we report simulation results on the electronic, structural and transport properties for two different applications of carbon nanotube-based devices: (1) effect of adsorbates on field emission; and (2) effect of mechanical deformation on the electronic transport. The reported simulations are based on First Principles Density Functional Theory (DFT), classical molecular mechanics, and tight-binding transport based on the recursive Green's function formalism. M. Marigo1,2, D. L. Cairns1, M. Davies1, M. Cook3,A. Ingram2,4,5, E. H. Stitt1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.59, No.3, pp. 217-238, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.059.217

Abstract In this work the complex motion of the Turbulamixer has been measured by Multiple-Positron Emission Particle Tracking (Multiple PEPT) in order to set-up a DEM numerical model. Positron emitting radioactive tracers were attached to three of the pivot bearings on the shaft of the mixer to enable the rotation and translation of the mixer chamber to be tracked in the PEPT camera. The measured movement was mathematically reconstructed and imported into DEM in order to apply the same movement to the modelled vessel. The three-dimensional motion of particles in a vessel located in the Turbula mixer was then calculated using… More >
