Equivalent One-Dimensional Spring-Dashpot System Representing Impedance Functions of Structural Systems with Non-Classical Damping

    Masato Saitoh1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.67, No.3, pp. 211-238, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.067.211

Abstract This paper describes the transformation of impedance functions in general structural systems with non-classical damping into a one-dimensional spring-dashpot system (1DSD). A transformation procedure based on complex modal analysis is proposed, where the impedance function is transformed into a 1DSD comprising units arranged in series. Each unit is a parallel system composed of a spring, a dashpot, and a unit having a spring and a dashpot arranged in series. Three application examples are presented to verify the applicability of the proposed procedure and the accuracy of the 1DSDs. The results indicate that the 1DSDs accurately simulate the impedance functions for… More >

The Reproducing Kernel DMS-FEM: 3D Shape Functions and Applications to Linear Solid Mechanics

    Sunilkumar N1, D Roy1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.66, No.3, pp. 249-284, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.066.249

Abstract We propose a family of 3D versions of a smooth finite element method (Sunilkumar and Roy 2010), wherein the globally smooth shape functions are derivable through the condition of polynomial reproduction with the tetrahedral B-splines (DMS-splines) or tensor-product forms of triangular B-splines and 1D NURBS bases acting as the kernel functions. While the domain decomposition is accomplished through tetrahedral or triangular prism elements, an additional requirement here is an appropriate generation of knotclouds around the element vertices or corners. The possibility of sensitive dependence of numerical solutions to the placements of knotclouds is largely arrested by enforcing the condition of… More >

A Smooth Finite Element Method Based on Reproducing Kernel DMS-Splines

    Sunilkumar N1, D Roy1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.65, No.2, pp. 107-154, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.065.107

Abstract The element-based piecewise smooth functional approximation in the conventional finite element method (FEM) results in discontinuous first and higher order derivatives across element boundaries. Despite the significant advantages of the FEM in modelling complicated geometries, a motivation in developing mesh-free methods has been the ease with which higher order globally smooth shape functions can be derived via the reproduction of polynomials. There is thus a case for combining these advantages in a so-called hybrid scheme or a 'smooth FEM' that, whilst retaining the popular mesh-based discretization, obtains shape functions with uniform Cp(p ≥ 1) continuity. One such recent attempt, a… More >

Solving Elastic Problems with Local Boundary Integral Equations (LBIE) and Radial Basis Functions (RBF) Cells

    E. J. Sellountos1, A. Sequeira1, D. Polyzos2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.2, pp. 109-136, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.109

Abstract A new Local Boundary Integral Equation (LBIE) method is proposed for the solution of plane elastostatic problems. Non-uniformly distributed points taken from a Finite Element Method (FEM) mesh cover the analyzed domain and form background cells with more than four points each. The FEM mesh determines the position of the points without imposing any connectivity requirement. The key-point of the proposed methodology is that the support domain of each point is divided into parts according to the background cells. An efficient Radial Basis Functions (RBF) interpolation scheme is exploited for the representation of displacements in each cell. Tractions in the… More >

Green's Functions for Anisotropic/Piezoelectric Bimaterials and Their Applications to Boundary Element Analysis

    Y.C. Chen1, Chyanbin Hwu2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.1, pp. 31-50, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.031

Abstract The Green's function for anisotropic bimaterials has been investigated around three decades ago. Since the mathematical formulation of piezoelectric elasticity can be organized into the same form as that of anisotropic elasticity by just expanding the dimension of the corresponding matrix to include the piezoelectric effects, the extension of the Green's function to piezoelectric bimaterials can be obtained immediately through the associated anisotropic bimaterials. In this paper, the Green's function for the bimaterials bonded together with one anisotropic material and one piezoelectric material is derived by applying Stroh's complex variable formalism with the aid of analytical continuation method. For this… More >

    Y. T. Gu1, P. Zhuang2, F. Liu3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 303-334, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.056.303

Abstract Recently, the numerical modelling and simulation for anomalous subdiffusion equation (ASDE), which is a type of fractional partial differential equation(FPDE) and has been found with widely applications in modern engineering and sciences, are attracting more and more attentions. The current dominant numerical method for modelling ASDE is Finite Difference Method (FDM), which is based on a pre-defined grid leading to inherited issues or shortcomings. This paper aims to develop an implicit meshless approach based on the radial basis functions (RBF) for numerical simulation of the non-linear ASDE. The discrete system of equations is obtained by using the meshless shape functions… More >

Error Analysis of Various Basis Functions Used in BEM Solution of Acoustic Scattering

    B. Chandrasekhar1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 211-230, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.056.211

Abstract In this work, various basis functions used in the Method of Moments or Boundary Element (MoM/BEM) solution of acoustic scattering problems are compared with each other for their performance. Single layer formulation of the rigid bodies is considered in comparison of the solutions. Geometry of a scatterer is descritized using triangular patch modeling and basis functions are defined on triangular patches, edges and nodes for three different solutions. Far field scattering cross sections for different frequencies of incident acoustic wave are compared with the closed form solutions. Also, the errors of the solutions using these three types of basis functions… More >

    D. Soares Jr.1, J. Sladek2, V. Sladek2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.50, No.2, pp. 115-140, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.050.115

Abstract In recent years the idea of using mesh-free or mesh-less methods for numerical solution of partial differential equations has received much attention, due to their potential advantage in eliminating the costly effort of mesh generation and re-meshing. A variety of meshless methods has been proposed so far. Many of them are derived from a weak-form formulation on global domain or a set of local subdomains. In the global formulation background cells are required for the integration of the weak form. In methods based on local weak-form formulation no cells are required and therefore they are often referred to as truly… More >

A New Method of Moments Solution Procedure to Solve Electrically Large Electromagnetic Scattering Problems

    T.N. Killian1, S.M. Rao1 and M.E. Baginski1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.3, pp. 255-270, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.255

Abstract In this work, we present a new method of moments solution procedure for calculating acoustic/electromagnetic scattering and radiation by a metallic body whose physical dimension is very large with respect to wavelength. The specially computed basis functions and the testing procedure results in a block-diagonally-dominant moment matrix where each block along the diagonal corresponds to a portion of the structure. The new solution procedure results in considerable savings in terms of computer storage and processing times. Although the procedure is outlined in general mathematical terms, the numerical results are presented only for electromagnetic scattering from two-dimensional bodies and compared with… More >
