Experimental Simulation and Numerical Modeling of Deformation and Damage Evolution of Pre-Holed Sandstones After Heat Treatment

    Shuo Yang1, Yuanhai Li1, 2, ∗, Xiaojie Tang1, 2, Jinshan Liu1, 2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.122, No.2, pp. 633-659, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.07919

Abstract The deformation and damage evolution of sandstone after heat treatment greatly influence the efficient and safe development of deep geothermal energy extraction. To investigate this issue, laboratory confined compression tests and numerical simulations were conducted on pre-holed sandstone specimens after heat treatment. The laboratory test results show that the failure modes are closely related to the heat treatment temperature, with increasing treatment temperature, the failure modes change from mixed and shear modes to a splitting mode. The cracks always initiate from the sidewalls of the hole and then propagate. The failure process inside the hole proceeds as follows: calm period,… More >

Valorization of a Good Bioceramic from Moroccan Waste Fish Bone by a Heat Treatment Method

    Kaoutar Kara1,*, Fatiha Ouanji2, El Mostapha LOTFI1, Mohammed El Mahi1, Mohamed Kacimi2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 1-7, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.00016

Abstract A tricalcium phosphate (TCP) material was produced from sardine and mackerel waste using a heat treatment method after a Soxhlet extraction to obtain the non-soluble portion of fish waste. The bones were annealed at temperatures between 400°C and 1200°C. The thermal analysis (TG-DTA) was carried out to investigate the thermal stability of TCP and to confirm the removal of organic matter from the raw fish. The calcined bones were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The calcium to phosphorous weight ratio was determined by ICP- AES. FT-IR and XRD… More >

Influence of Water and Humidity on Wood Modification with Lactic Acid

    Charlotte Grosse1,2,*, Marion Noël1, Marie-France Thévenon3, Lauri Rautkari4, Philippe Gérardin2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 259-269, 2018, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634176

Abstract Impregnation of dry wood with pure lactic acid oligomers (OLAs) followed by heat treatment confers promising properties to wood because of OLA's good diffusion, in-situ polymerization and persistence in cell walls. Treatment provides drastic reduction of the equilibrium moisture content, high dimensional stability and good durability. The presence of water during treatment has been evaluated. Curing of OLA impregnated dry wood in humid atmosphere leads to a strong and global degradation of the material. OLA treatment of wet wood only impacts the water leaching rate negatively. Treatment of dry wood with OLA diluted in water additionally decreases the biological resistance… More >

Mechanical Response and Energy Dissipation Analysis of Heat-Treated Granite Under Repeated Impact Loading

    Zhiliang Wang1,*, Nuocheng Tian2, Jianguo Wang3, Shengqi Yang3, Guang Liu1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.59, No.1, pp. 275-296, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.04247

Abstract The mechanical behaviors and energy dissipation characteristics of heat-treated granite were investigated under repeated impact loading. The granite samples were firstly heat-treated at the temperature of 20°C, 200°C, 400°C, and 600°C, respectively. The thermal damage characteristics of these samples were then observed and measured before impact tests. Dynamic impact compression tests finally were carried out using a modified split-Hopkinson pressure bar under three impact velocities of 12 m/s, 15 m/s, and 18 m/s. These test results show that the mineral composition and the main oxides of the granite do not change with these treatment temperatures. The number of microcracks and… More >

Monte Carlo Simulation of Ti-6Al-4V Grain Growth during Fast Heat Treatment

    Amir Reza Ansari Dezfoli1, Weng-Sing Hwang1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.49-50, No.1, pp. 1-11, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2015.049.001

Abstract Investigations of the microstructural evolution of Titanium (Ti) alloys during high temperature processes and heat treatment are attracting more attention due to wide variety of applications for such alloys. In most of these processes the Titanium alloys are subjected to fast heating or cooling rates. In this paper, Monte Carlo simulation is used to simulate the grain growth kinetics of Ti-6Al-4V alloy during fast heat treatment. Here, Monte Carlo simulation of grain growth is based on the Q-state Potts model. Our model is calibrated using the parabolic grain growth law, dn-d0n = kt, where the empirical constants are taken… More >
