Shape Optimization of Orthopedic Fixation Plate Based on Static Stress Analysis

    Xiaozhong Chen1,*, Zhijian Mao1

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.15, No.4, pp. 229-241, 2018, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2018.03818

Abstract Shape optimization of orthopedic fixation plate is of great importance in the treatment of complex fracture. Therefore, a method in this paper to automatically optimize the complex shape of anatomical plate according to static analysis. Based on the theory of finite element analysis (FEA), our approach is processed as follows. First, the three-dimensional finite element model of the fracture fixation is constructed. Next, according to the type and feature of fracture, the anatomical plate was parameterized in two levels (the bounding surface and plate model). Then, parameter constraints are set up to meet the needs of surgical fracture treatment. Finally,… More >

    He Kunjin1,2, Zou Zeyu1, Zhang Rongli1

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 265-286, 2015, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2015.012.263

Abstract To quickly construct the orthopedic plates and to conveniently edit it, a novel method for designing the plates is put forward based on feature idea and parameterization. Firstly, attached to the existing or repaired bone model, the region of interest (ROI) is selected as the abutted surface of orthopedic plate, and the ROI is reconstructed to form a CAD surface. Secondly, the CAD surface is to be defined as a surface feature (SF) and then some semantic parameters are configured for it. Lastly, the plate body is constructed through thickening, and some higher parameters are defined for it so as… More >

Pathophysiology of Glaucoma and Continuous Measurements of Intraocular Pressure

Arthur J. Sit*, John H.K. Liu

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.6, No.1, pp. 57-70, 2009, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2009.006.057

Abstract Glaucoma is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. The main risk factor for glaucoma is an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), which is also the only currently treatable risk factor. Despite its importance, our understanding of IOP is incomplete and our ability to measure IOP is limited. IOP is known to undergo both random fluctuations as well as variations following a circadian pattern. In humans, IOP is highest at night and lower during the daytime, largely due to changes in body position, although other factors appear to contribute. In rabbits, IOP is also highest at night and lower… More >

An Artificial Boundary Method for Burgers’ Equation in the Unbounded Domain

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.100, No.6, pp. 445-461, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.100.445

Abstract In this paper, we construct a numerical method for one-dimensional Burgers’ equation in the unbounded domain by using artificial boundary conditions. The original problem is converted by Hopf-Cole transformation to the heat equation in the unbounded domain, the latter is reduced to an equivalent problem in a bounded computational domain by using two artificial integral boundary conditions, a finite difference method with discrete artificial boundary conditions is established by using the method of reduction of order for the last problem, and thereupon the numerical solution of Burgers’ equation is obtained. This artificial boundary method is proved and verified to be… More >

An Iterative Algorithm for Solving a System of Nonlinear Algebraic Equations, F(x) = 0, Using the System of ODEs with an Optimum α in x· = λ[αF + (1−α)BTF]; Bij = ∂Fi/∂xj

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.73, No.4, pp. 395-432, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.073.395

Abstract In this paper we solve a system of nonlinear algebraic equations (NAEs) of a vector-form: F(x) = 0. Based-on an invariant manifold defined in the space of (x,t) in terms of the residual-norm of the vector F(x), we derive a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with a fictitious time-like variable t as an independent variable: x· = λ[αF + (1−α)BTF], where λ and α are scalars and Bij = ∂Fi/∂xj. From this set of nonlinear ODEs, we derive a purely iterative algorithm for finding the solution vector x, without having to invert the Jacobian (tangent stiffness matrix)… More >

Convectively Unstable Anti-Symmetric Waves in Flows Past Bluff Bodies

    Bhaskar Kumar1, Sanjay Mittal1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.53, No.2, pp. 95-122, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.053.095

Abstract The steady flow past a circular cylinder is investigated. Symmetry conditions are imposed along the centerline of the flow field. The variation of the structure of the recirculation zone with the Reynolds number is studied. The effect of the location of lateral boundary on the flow is analyzed and compared with results from earlier studies. The eddy length varies linearly with Re. Three kinds of solutions, based on eddy structure, are found for different location of the lateral boundary. Global linear stability analysis has been carried out in a translating frame to determine the convective modes for flow past a… More >

A Novel Multi-Hop Algorithm for Wireless Network with Unevenly Distributed Nodes

    Yu Liu1, Zhong Yang2, Xiaoyong Yan3, Guangchi Liu4, Bo Hu5,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.58, No.1, pp. 79-100, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.03626

Abstract Node location estimation is not only the promise of the wireless network for target recognition, monitoring, tracking and many other applications, but also one of the hot topics in wireless network research. In this paper, the localization algorithm for wireless network with unevenly distributed nodes is discussed, and a novel multi-hop localization algorithm based on Elastic Net is proposed. The proposed approach is formulated as a regression problem, which is solved by Elastic Net. Unlike other previous localization approaches, the proposed approach overcomes the shortcomings of traditional approaches assume that nodes are distributed in regular areas without holes or obstacles,… More >
