    Low-Velocity Impact Response of Braided Carbon/Epoxy Composites

    Abstract In this paper, low-velocity impact response of braided composites is presented. Three types of braided fabrics were used. They were:$\pm$45, 0/$\pm$45, and 0/$\pm$60. Laminates with 7 layers of$\pm$45 and 4 layers of 0/$\pm$45, and 0/$\pm$60 were fabricated by vacuum assisted resin infusion molding process to get an average thickness ranging from 2.25 to 2.4 mm. Samples of size 10$\times$ 10 cm were then cut from the panels and impacted at 10, 20 and 30 J. Impact parameters like peak load and absorbed energy were calculated and normalized for thickness.     Abstract This paper is focused on the micro-damage evolution properties of gray green mudstone under impacting disturbance load conditions for the first time by using the real time CT testing technique. CT images and CT values for rock cross-sections under different impacting disturbance loading levels were obtained. The paper is also to describe process of rock creep damage under disturbance loads and to explore the mechanism of micro-damage.     Abstract This work presents an approach for weight and reliability optimization of aeronautical armors. Military and police helicopters are usually exposed to highly risky situations, with a high probability for these aircrafts to be hit by projectiles. In this context, floor aircraft armor can be used to protect the crews' lives. However, the armoring of an aircraft causes an increase in weight.     Abstract In the present study, Nanomer® I-28E, organically modified montmorillonite nanoclay supplied by Nanocor Inc., was used to modify SC-15, a toughened epoxy system using sonication route. Different weight percentage ranging from 1-3% of nanoclay was used. The modified epoxy was then used to fabricate 15-layer plain weave carbon/epoxy composite laminates using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) method.     Abstract This paper reviews numerical methods that are currently available to simulate bird strike as well as the theory of the event. It also summarizes important parameters and provides guidelines as to how to set up the analysis and how to evaluate a model. The information provided is based on physical properties and available results regarding a bird and its behaviour upon impact.     Toddy Palm (Borassus Flabellifer) Fruit Fibre Bundles as Reinforcement in Polylactide (PLA) Composites: An Overview About Fibre and Composite Characteristics

    Abstract Toddy palm fruit have an apparent density below 0.8 g/cm³ and offer an interesting lightweight construction potential in polylactide (PLA) composites reinforced with 37 mass-% fibres. Single fibre bundles show similar mechanical properties compared with coir: tensile strength of 240 MPa, Young´s modulus of 3.8 GPa and an elongation at break of 31%. However, density and diameter (~ 50 μm) of fruit fibre bundles are significantly lower.     Abstract In this study, castor oil, rapeseed oil and medium chain triglycerides of coconut oil, were transesterified by means of 2-ethyl-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol (trimethylolpropane) and consequently used to convert polycarbonate waste from end-of-life vehicles into liquid polyols. The prepared recycled polyols, composed uniquely of renewable and recycled components, had a hydroxyl number of ca. 250 mg KOH·g−1. They were successfully applied as 100% replacement of a virgin polyol for preparation of solid crosslinked polyurethanes (PU) by solvent-free casting.     Abstract Two different cases with the aim to show, how important the crack closure phenomenon can be in reality and can affect eventual crack growth behaviour by an unexpected way are described and discussed in the paper, namely: (i) a favourable effect of fretting oxidation crack closure in air which can disappear in oil environments, typical for many machinery applications and (ii) a favourable effect of crack closure occurring as a results of corrosion products in corrosive environments, which would normally increase crack growth rate by stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue mechanisms.
