Identification of Internal Damage in Circular Cylinders through Laser Scanning of Vibrating Surfaces

    Yisu Xi1, Binkai Shi2, Wei Xu1,3,*, Jing Ge4, Huaxin Zhu5, Dragoslav Sumarac6,7

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 163-177, 2022, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.022082

Abstract With the aid of non-contact measurements of vibrating surfaces through laser scanning, operating deflection shapes (ODSs) with high spatial resolutions can be used to graphically characterize damage in plane structures. Although numerous damage identification approaches relying on laser-measured ODSs have been developed for plate-type structures, they cannot be directly applied to circular cylinders due to the gap between equations of motions of plates and circular cylinders. To fill this gap, a novel approach is proposed in this study for damage identification of circular cylinders. Damage-induced discontinuities of the derivatives of ODSs can be used to graphically manifest the occurrence of… More >

    B. Chinthamani1,*, N. S. Bhuvaneswari2, R. Senthil Kumar3, N. R. Shanker4

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 515-530, 2022, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2022.025410

Abstract Motor Torque (MT) measurement plays a vital role for evaluating the performance of squirrel cage induction motor during operating conditions. Accurate and continuous measurements of MT provide information regarding driving load capacity, performance degradation of motor, reduces downtime and increases the efficiency. Traditional inline torque sensors-based measurement becomes inaccurate during abrupt change in load during starting condition of motor due to torque spikes. Mounting of torque sensor on motor is a major problem during torque measurement. Improper mounting of sensor acquires signals from other inefficient driveline components such as gearbox, couplings, and bearing. In this paper, we propose a non-contact… More >

Abstract This work provides the design and analysis of a single layer, linearly polarized millimeter wave reflectarray antenna with mutual coupling optimization. Detailed analysis was carried out at 26 GHz design frequency using the simulations of the reflectarray unit cells as well as the periodic reflectarray antenna. The simulated results were verified by the scattering parameter and far-field measurements of the unit cell and periodic arrays, respectively. A close agreement between the simulated and measured results was observed in all the cases. Apart from the unit cells and reflectarray, the waveguide and horn antenna were also fabricated to be used in the… More >

An Enhanced Re-Ranking Model for Person Re-Identification

    Jayavarthini Chockalingam*, Malathy Chidambaranathan

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.33, No.2, pp. 697-710, 2022, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2022.024142

Abstract Presently, Person Re-IDentification (PRe-ID) acts as a vital part of real time video surveillance to ensure the rising need for public safety. Resolving the PRe-ID problem includes the process of matching observations of persons among distinct camera views. Earlier models consider PRe-ID as a unique object retrieval issue and determine the retrieval results mainly based on the unidirectional matching among the probe and gallery images. But the accurate matching might not be present in the top-k ranking results owing to the appearance modifications caused by the difference in illumination, pose, viewpoint, and occlusion. For addressing these issues, a new Hyper-parameter… More >

A Value-at-Risk Based Approach for PMU Placement in Distribution Systems

    Min Liu*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.2, pp. 781-800, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.016657

Abstract With the application of phasor measurement units (PMU) in the distribution system, it is expected that the performance of the distribution system state estimation can be improved obviously with the PMU measurements into consideration. How to appropriately place the PMUs in the distribution is therefore become an important issue due to the economical consideration. According to the concept of efficient frontier, a value-at-risk based approach is proposed to make optimal placement of PMU taking account of the uncertainty of measure errors, statistical characteristics of the pseudo measurements, and reliability of the measurement instrument. The reasonability and feasibility of the proposed… More >

Skew t Distribution-Based Nonlinear Filter with Asymmetric Measurement Noise Using Variational Bayesian Inference

    Chen Xu1, Yawen Mao2, Hongtian Chen3,*, Hongfeng Tao1, Fei Liu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.131, No.1, pp. 349-364, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.019027

Abstract This paper is focused on the state estimation problem for nonlinear systems with unknown statistics of measurement noise. Based on the cubature Kalman filter, we propose a new nonlinear filtering algorithm that employs a skew t distribution to characterize the asymmetry of the measurement noise. The system states and the statistics of skew t noise distribution, including the shape matrix, the scale matrix, and the degree of freedom (DOF) are estimated jointly by employing variational Bayesian (VB) inference. The proposed method is validated in a target tracking example. Results of the simulation indicate that the proposed nonlinear filter can perform… More >

Security Threat and Vulnerability Assessment and Measurement in Secure Software Development

Mamoona Humayun1, NZ Jhanjhi2,*, Maram Fahhad Almufareh1, Muhammad Ibrahim Khalil3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.3, pp. 5039-5059, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.019289

Abstract Security is critical to the success of software, particularly in today's fast-paced, technology-driven environment. It ensures that data, code, and services maintain their CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability). This is only possible if security is taken into account at all stages of the SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle). Various approaches to software quality have been developed, such as CMMI (Capability maturity model integration). However, there exists no explicit solution for incorporating security into all phases of SDLC. One of the major causes of pervasive vulnerabilities is a failure to prioritize security. Even the most proactive companies use the “patch and… More >

Abstract With the rapid development of Android devices, Android is currently one of the most popular mobile operating systems. However, it is also believed to be an entry point of many attack vectors. The existing Android malware detection method does not fare well when dealing with complex and intelligent malware applications, especially those based on feature detection systems which have become increasingly elusive. Therefore, we propose a novel feature selection algorithm called frequency differential selection (FDS) and weight measurement for Android malware detection. The purpose is to solve the shortcomings of the existing feature selection algorithms in detection and to filter… More >
