    Huan J. Keh1, Yu C. Chang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.62, No.3, pp. 225-254, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.062.225

Abstract A theoretical study of the Stokes flow caused by a rigid particle of revolution translating axisymmetrically perpendicular to two parallel plane walls at an arbitrary position between them in a viscous fluid, which may slip at the particle surface, is presented. A method of distribution of a set of spherical singularities along the axis of revolution within a prolate particle or on the fundamental plane within an oblate particle is used to find the general solution of the fluid velocity field that satisfies the boundary conditions at the plane walls and at infinity. The slip condition on the particle surface… More >

    Hui-Fen Guo1,2, Bin-Gang Xu1,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.61, No.3, pp. 201-222, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.061.201

Abstract A numerical method is developed for modeling the dynamics of a flexible fiber immersed in a compressible swirling flow. The modeling approach is based on combining an Eulerian finite volume formulation for the fluid flow and a Lagrangian small-deformation formulation for the dynamics of the fiber. The fiber is modeled as a chain of beads connected through mass-less rods. The bending and twisting deformation of the fiber are represented by the displacements of the successive beads. A computational strategy is proposed for the computation of the fluid parameters at the center of discrete fiber sections. To deal with the fiber-wall… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.59, No.3, pp. 217-238, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.059.217

Abstract In this work the complex motion of the Turbulamixer has been measured by Multiple-Positron Emission Particle Tracking (Multiple PEPT) in order to set-up a DEM numerical model. Positron emitting radioactive tracers were attached to three of the pivot bearings on the shaft of the mixer to enable the rotation and translation of the mixer chamber to be tracked in the PEPT camera. The measured movement was mathematically reconstructed and imported into DEM in order to apply the same movement to the modelled vessel. The three-dimensional motion of particles in a vessel located in the Turbula mixer was then calculated using… More >

Numerical Solution of Non-steady Flows, Around Surfaces in Spatially and Temporally Arbitrary Motions, by using the MLPG method

    R. Avila1, S. N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.54, No.1, pp. 15-64, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.054.015

Abstract The Meshless Local Petrov Galerkin (MLPG) method is used to solve the non-steady two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Transient laminar flow field calculations have been carried out in domains wherein certain surfaces have: (i) a sliding motion, (ii) a harmonic motion, (iii) an undulatory movement, and (iv) a contraction-expansion movement. The weak form of the governing equations has been formulated in a Cartesian coordinate system and taking into account the primitive variables of the flow field. A fully implicit pressure correction approach, which requires at each time step an iterative process to solve in a sequential manner the equations which govern… More >

Tracking Features in Image Sequences with Kalman Filtering, Global Optimization, Mahalanobis Distance and a Management Model

    Raquel R. Pinho1, João Manuel R. S. Tavares1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.1, pp. 51-76, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.051

Abstract This work addresses the problem of tracking feature points along image sequences. In order to analyze the undergoing movement, an approach based on the Kalman filtering technique has been used, which basically carries out the estimation and correction of the features' movement in every image frame. So as to integrate the measurements obtained from each image into the Kalman filter, a data optimization process has been adopted to achieve the best global correspondence set. The proposed criterion minimizes the cost of global matching, which is based on the Mahalanobis distance. A management model is employed to manage the features being… More >

Effects of Constitutive Parameters and Dynamic Tensile Loads on Radially Periodic Oscillation of Micro-Void Centered at Incompressible Hyperelastic Spheres

    X.G. Yuan1,2, H.W. Zhang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.40, No.3, pp. 201-224, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.040.201

Abstract The radially symmetric motion of the pre-existing micro-void centered at an incompressible hyperelastic sphere under the dynamic surface tensile loads relating to time is investigated in this paper. Some interesting conclusions are obtained by qualitatively analyzing the solutions of the motion equation of micro-void in detail; meanwhile, numerical simulations are used for understanding the obtained conclusions. In particular, it is proved that the motion of the micro-void with time would present a nonlinearly periodic oscillation if the values of the constant tensile load, the material and the structure parameters are given and that the oscillation amplitudes of the micro-void are… More >

    X.G. Yuan1,2, H.W. Zhang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 175-184, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.032.175

Abstract In this paper, a dynamic problem that describes void formation and motion in an incompressible hyperelastic solid sphere composed of a transversely isotropic Valanis-Landel material is examined, where the sphere is subjected to a class of periodic step tensile loads on its surface. A motion equation of void is derived. On analyzing the dynamical properties of the motion equation and examining the effect of material anisotropy on void formation and motion in the sphere, we obtain some new and interesting results. Firstly, under a constant surface tensile load, it is proved that a void would form in the sphere as… More >

Modeling Helicopter Rotor Blade Flapping Motion Considering Nonlinear Aerodynamics

    Jyoti Ranjan Majhi, Ranjan Ganguli1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.27, No.1&2, pp. 25-36, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.027.025

Abstract The flapping equation for a rotating rigid helicopter blade is typically derived by considering 1) small flap angle, 2) small induced angle of attack and 3) linear aerodynamics. However, the use of nonlinear aerodynamics can make the assumptions of small angles suspect. A general equation describing helicopter blade flap dynamics for large flap angle and large induced inflow angle of attack is derived in this paper with nonlinear aerodynamics . Numerical simulations are performed by solving the nonlinear flapping ordinary differential equation for steady state conditions and the validity of the small angle approximations are examined. It is shown that… More >

Slow viscous motion of a solid particle in a spherical cavity

    A. Sellier1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 165-180, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.025.165

Abstract The slow viscous and either imposed or gravity-driven migration of a solid arbitrarily-shaped particle suspended in a Newtonian liquid bounded by a spherical cavity is calculated using two different boundary element approaches. Each advocated method appeals to a few boundary-integral equations and, by contrast with previous works, also holds for non-spherical particles. The first procedure puts usual free-space Stokeslets on both the cavity and particle surfaces whilst the second one solely spreads specific Stokeslets obtained elsewhere in Oseen (1927) on the particle's boundary. Each approach receives a numerical implementation which is found to be in excellent agreement with accurate results… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.24, No.2&3, pp. 95-102, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.024.095

Abstract The periodic lattice registry of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been exploited for the possibilities of development of nanodevices. This paper studied the telescoping behaviors of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) by atomic-scale finite element and tight-bind Green function methods. It was found that telescoping a DWCNT (e.g., (6,3)/(12,6)) will induce a rotational motion of the inner CNT that has a chirl angle θ (0° < θ < 30°). This telescoping-induced rotational motion does not exist for armchair and zigzag DWCNTs due to the symmetry of CNTs. The rotational angle is completely determined by the chirality of the inner CNT and… More >
