Neural Network-Based Second Order Reliability Method (NNBSORM) for Laminated Composite Plates in Free Vibration

    Mena E. Tawfik1, 2, Peter L. Bishay3, *, Edward A. Sadek1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.115, No.1, pp. 105-129, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2018.115.105

Abstract Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS), commonly used for reliability analysis, require a large amount of data points to obtain acceptable accuracy, even if the Subset Simulation with Importance Sampling (SS/IS) methods are used. The Second Order Reliability Method (SORM) has proved to be an excellent rapid tool in the stochastic analysis of laminated composite structures, when compared to the slower MCS techniques. However, SORM requires differentiating the performance function with respect to each of the random variables involved in the simulation. The most suitable approach to do this is to use a symbolic solver, which renders the simulations very slow, although… More >

Abstract Amongst several biometric traits, Vein pattern biometric has drawn much attention among researchers and diverse users. It gains its importance due to its difficulty in reproduction and inherent security advantages. Many research papers have dealt with the topic of new generation biometric solutions such as iris and vein biometrics. However, most implementations have been based on small datasets due to the difficulties in obtaining samples. In this paper, a deeper study has been conducted on previously suggested methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) using a larger dataset. Also, modifications are suggested for implementation using ensemble methods. Ensembles were used… More >

    Ali Bekir YILDIZ1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.113, No.3, pp. 261-274, 2017, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2017.113.273

Abstract In this paper, a computer-based systematic and efficient formulation method is presented for obtaining the network functions of linear or linearized time-invariant dynamic circuits. The method employs the modified nodal approach to obtain the system equations. The technique is based on developing a matrix formulation for modelling network functions. By using both symbolic manipulation of algebraic expressions and numeric processes, the network functions are expressed with a matrix-based method. Application examples are given to illustrate the features of the method. More >

Reliability Analysis for Complex Systems based on Dynamic Evidential Network Considering Epistemic Uncertainty

    Rongxing Duan1, Yanni Lin1, Longfei Hu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.113, No.1, pp. 17-34, 2017, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2017.113.015

Abstract Fault tolerant technology has greatly improved the reliability of modern systems on one hand and makes their failure mechanisms more complex on the other. The characteristics of dynamics of failure, diversity of distribution and epistemic uncertainty always exist in these systems, which increase the challenges in the reliability assessment of these systems significantly. This paper presents a novel reliability analysis framework for complex systems within which the failure rates of components are expressed in interval numbers. Specifically, it uses a dynamic fault tree (DFT) to model the dynamic fault behaviors and copes with the epistemic uncertainty using Dempster- Shafer (D-S)… More >

Foad Nazari1, Mohammad Hossein Abolbashari1,2, Seyed Mahmoud Hosseini3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.105, No.4, pp. 271-299, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.105.271

Abstract Present study is concerned with three dimensional natural frequency analysis of functionally graded sandwich rectangular plates using Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs).The plate consists of two homogeneous face sheets and a power-law FGM core. Natural frequencies of the plate are obtained by 3D MLPG method and are verified with available references. Convergence study of the first four natural frequencies for different node numbers is the next step. Also, effects of two parameters of “FG core to plate thickness ratio” and “volume fraction index” on natural frequencies of plate are investigated. Then, four distinct ANNs are… More >

Pore-Scale Modeling of Navier-Stokes Flow in Distensible Networks and Porous Media

    Taha Sochi1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.99, No.2, pp. 151-168, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.099.151

Abstract In this paper, a pore-scale network modeling method, based on the flow continuity residual in conjunction with a Newton-Raphson non-linear iterative solving technique, is proposed and used to obtain the pressure and flow fields in a network of interconnected distensible ducts representing, for instance, blood vasculature or deformable porous media. A previously derived analytical expression correlating boundary pressures to volumetric flow rate in compliant tubes for a pressure-area constitutive elastic relation has been used to represent the underlying flow model. Comparison to a preceding equivalent method, the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes finite element, was made and the results were analyzed. The advantages… More >

Particle-Based Moving Interface Method for The Study of the Interaction Between Soft Colloid Particles and Immersed Fibrous Network

    Louis C. Foucard1, John Pellegrino1, Franck J. Vernerey1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.98, No.1, pp. 101-127, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.098.101

Abstract Many colloidal-sized particles encountered in biological and membranebased separation applications can be characterized as soft vesicles such as cells, yeast, viruses and surfactant micelles. The deformation of these vesicles is expected to critically affect permeation by accommodating pore shapes and sizes or enhancing the adhesion with a pore surface. Numerical and theoretical modelings will be critical to fully understand these processes and thus design novel filtration membranes that target, not only size, but deformability as a selection criterion. The present paper therefore introduces a multiscale strategy that enables the determination of the permeability of a fibrous network with respect to… More >

    K. Kakuda1, Y. Hayashi1, J. Toyotani1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.103, No.4, pp. 229-249, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.103.229

Abstract In this paper, we present the application of the particle-based simulations to complicated fluid flow problem with free surfaces. The particle approach is based on the MPS (Moving Particle Simulation) method using hyperbolic-type weighting function to stabilize the spurious oscillatory solutions for solving the Poisson equation with respect to the pressure fields. The hyperbolic-type weighting function is constructed by differentiating the characteristic function based on neural network framework. The weighting function proposed herein is collaterally applied to the kernel function in the SPH-framework. Numerical results demonstrate the workability and validity of the present MPS approach through the dambreaking flow problem. More >

    J.L. Morales1, I. Alhama1, M. Alcaraz1, F. Alhama

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.94, No.3, pp. 261-277, 2013, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2013.094.261

Abstract In this paper, the propagation of 2-D, transversal elastic waves is simulated by using the network method. The spatially discretized wave equation is the basis for designing the model of the volume element which contains as many components as addends in the governing equation. The whole network model, including the boundary conditions, is run in a suitable circuit simulation code such as PSpice with a relatively small computational time. The rules for the design are very few since there is a special component in the libraries of such codes, named controlled source, that is capable of implementing any kind of… More >

    Yonghua Zhou1, Xun Yang1, Chao Mi1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.92, No.5, pp. 477-491, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.092.477

Abstract Route selections for vehicles can be equivalent to determine the optimized operation processes for vehicles which intertwine with each other. This paper attempts to utilize the whole methodology of model predictive control to engender rational routes for vehicles, which involves three important parts, i.e. simulation prediction, rolling optimization and feedback adjustment. The route decisions are implemented over the rolling prediction horizon taking the real-time feedback information and the future intertwined operation processes into account. The driving behaviors and route selection speculations of drivers and even traffic propagation models are on-line identified and adapted for the simulation prediction in next prediction… More >
