    Jin Wang1,2, Chunwei Ju2, Yu Gao2, Arun Kumar Sangaiah3, Gwang-jun Kim4,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 433-446, 2018, DOI: 10.3970/cmc.2018.04132

Abstract Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are large-scale and high-density networks that typically have coverage area overlap. In addition, a random deployment of sensor nodes cannot fully guarantee coverage of the sensing area, which leads to coverage holes in WSNs. Thus, coverage control plays an important role in WSNs. To alleviate unnecessary energy wastage and improve network performance, we consider both energy efficiency and coverage rate for WSNs. In this paper, we present a novel coverage control algorithm based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Firstly, the sensor nodes are randomly deployed in a target area and remain static after deployment. Then, the… More >

    Shengbiao Wu1,2,3, Weihua Cao1,3,*, Can Liu1,3, Min Wu1,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.116, No.3, pp. 433-453, 2018, DOI: 10.31614/cmes.2018.03309

Abstract A computer-aided tuning method that combines T-S fuzzy neural network (T-S FNN) and offers improved space mapping (SM) is presented in this study. This method consists of three main aspects. First, the coupling matrix is effectively extracted under the influence of phase shift and cavity loss after the initial tuning. Second, the surrogate model is realized by using a T-S FNN based on subspace clustering. Third, the mapping relationship between the actual and the surrogate models is established by the improved space mapping algorithm, and the optimal position of the tuning screws are found by updating the input and output… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.114, No.2, pp. 209-220, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2018.114.209

Abstract Amongst several biometric traits, Vein pattern biometric has drawn much attention among researchers and diverse users. It gains its importance due to its difficulty in reproduction and inherent security advantages. Many research papers have dealt with the topic of new generation biometric solutions such as iris and vein biometrics. However, most implementations have been based on small datasets due to the difficulties in obtaining samples. In this paper, a deeper study has been conducted on previously suggested methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) using a larger dataset. Also, modifications are suggested for implementation using ensemble methods. Ensembles were used… More >

Pore-Scale Modeling of Navier-Stokes Flow in Distensible Networks and Porous Media

    Taha Sochi1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.99, No.2, pp. 151-168, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.099.151

Abstract In this paper, a pore-scale network modeling method, based on the flow continuity residual in conjunction with a Newton-Raphson non-linear iterative solving technique, is proposed and used to obtain the pressure and flow fields in a network of interconnected distensible ducts representing, for instance, blood vasculature or deformable porous media. A previously derived analytical expression correlating boundary pressures to volumetric flow rate in compliant tubes for a pressure-area constitutive elastic relation has been used to represent the underlying flow model. Comparison to a preceding equivalent method, the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes finite element, was made and the results were analyzed. The advantages… More >

A New High-order Time-kernel BIEM for the Burgers Equation

    N. Mai-Duy1,2, T. Tran-Cong2, R.I. Tanner3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 177-186, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.016.177

Abstract This paper presents a new high-order time-kernel boundary-integral-equation method (BIEM) for numerically solving transient problems governed by the Burgers equation. Instead of using high-order Lagrange polynomials such as quadratic and quartic interpolation functions, the proposed method employs integrated radial-basis-function networks (IRBFNs) to represent the unknown functions in boundary and volume integrals. Numerical implementations of ordinary and double integrals involving time in the presence of IRBFNs are discussed in detail. The proposed method is verified through the solution of diffusion and convection-diffusion problems. A comparison of the present results and those obtained by low-order BIEMs and other methods is also given. More >

    C.-D. Tran1, D.-A. An-Vo1, N. Mai-Duy1, T. Tran-Cong1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.82, No.2, pp. 137-162, 2011, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2011.082.137

Abstract This paper presents a numerical approach for macro-micro multi-scale modelling of visco-elastic fluid flows based on the Integrated Radial Basis Function Networks (IRBFNs) and the Stochastic Simulation Technique (SST). The extra stress is calculated using the Brownian configuration fields (BCFs) technique while the velocity field is locally approximated at a set of collocation points using 1D-IRBFNs. In this approach, the stress is decoupled from the velocity field and computed from the molecular configuration directly without the need for a closed form rheological constitutive equation. The equations governing the macro flow field are discretised using a meshless collocation method where the… More >

The Bauschinger Effect on 3-D SIFs for Networks of Radial and Longitudinally-Coplanar Semi-Elliptical Internal Surface Cracks In Autofrettaged Pressurized Thick-Walled Cylinders

    Q. Ma1, C. Levy2, M. Perl3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 95-110, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.029.095

Abstract Networks of radial and longitudinally-coplanar, internal, surface cracks are typical in rifled, autofrettaged, gun barrels. In two previous papers, the separate effects of large arrays of either radial or longitudinally-coplanar semi-elliptical, internal, surface cracks in a thick-walled, cylindrical, pressure vessel under both ideal and realistic autofrettage were studied. When pressure is considered solely, radial crack density and longitudinal crack spacing were found to have opposing effects on the prevailing stress intensity factor, KIP. Furthermore, the addition of the negative stress intensity factor (SIF), KIA, resulting from the residual stress field due to autofrettage, whether ideal or realistic, tended to decrease… More >

A Meshless Modeling of Dynamic Strain Localization in Quasi-Brittle Materials Using Radial Basis Function Networks

    P. Le1, N. Mai-Duy2, T. Tran-Cong3, G. Baker4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 43-68, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.025.043

Abstract This paper describes an integrated radial basis function network (IRBFN) method for the numerical modelling of the dynamics of strain localization due to strain softening in quasi-brittle materials. The IRBFN method is a truly meshless method that is based on an unstructured point collocation procedure. We introduce a new and effective regularization method to enhance the performance of the IRBFN method and alleviate the numerical oscillations associated with weak discontinuity at the elastic wave front. The dynamic response of a one dimensional bar is investigated using both local and non-local continuum models. Numerical results, which compare favourably with those obtained… More >

Computation of transient viscous flows using indirect radial basis function networks

    N. Mai-Duy1, L. Mai-Cao2, T. Tran-Cong3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.18, No.1, pp. 59-78, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.018.059

Abstract In this paper, an indirect/integrated radial-basis-function network (IRBFN) method is further developed to solve transient partial differential equations (PDEs) governing fluid flow problems. Spatial derivatives are discretized using one- and two-dimensional IRBFN interpolation schemes, whereas temporal derivatives are approximated using a method of lines and a finite-difference technique. In the case of moving interface problems, the IRBFN method is combined with the level set method to capture the evolution of the interface. The accuracy of the method is investigated by considering several benchmark test problems, including the classical lid-driven cavity flow. Very accurate results are achieved using relatively low numbers… More >
