    G. Milani1, T. Rotunno2, E. Sacco3, A. Tralli1,4

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 29-50, 2006, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2006.002.029

Abstract Aim of the present work is the evaluation of the ultimate load bearing capacity of masonry panels reinforced with FRP strips. The investigation is developed performing both experimental and numerical studies. In particular, several panels subjected to different loading conditions are tested in the Tests Laboratory of the University of Florence (Italy). Then, numerical models based on combined homogenization and limit analysis techniques are proposed. The results obtained by numerical simulations are compared with experimental data. The good agreement obtained shows that the proposed numerical model can be applied for the evaluation of the ultimate load bearing capacity of reinforced… More >

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.1, No.4, pp. 267-276, 2005, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2005.001.267

Abstract Aim of this work is to investigate into the possibility of enhancing the fatigue resistance of CrN PVD coated components. In particular PVD coated spur gears were tested and numerical simulation of crack propagation was carried out. The coating layer micro-hardness and the residual stresses characterising the surface film were measured and the obtained results were introduced in a numerical modelling predicting fatigue life procedure of coated gears used in gearboxes for automotive applications. The number of cycles necessary to reach specified crack depths of coated and uncoated samples was numerically determined and represents a powerful tool to predict fatigue… More >

A Numerical Investigation of the Thermal Performances of an Array of Heat Pipes for Battery Thermal Management

    Chaoyi Wan1, *

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.15, No.4, pp. 343-356, 2019, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2019.07812

Abstract A comparative numerical study has been conducted on the thermal performance of a heat pipe cooling system considering several influential factors such as the coolant flow rate, the coolant inlet temperature, and the input power. A comparison between numerical data and results available in the literature has demonstrated that our numerical procedure could successfully predict the heat transfer performance of the considered heat pipe cooling system for a battery. Specific indicators such as temperature, heat flux, and pressure loss were extracted to describe the characteristics of such a system. On the basis of the distributions of the temperature ratio of… More >

    F. Auricchio1, L. Petrini2, R. Pietrabissa3, E. Sacco4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.3&4, pp. 365-380, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.365

Abstract Since 80’s many devices were developed to exploit the unique blend of mechanical and biocompatibility properties of shape memory alloys in orthodontic applications. It results in a high clinical effectiveness, but also in a spreading of technical knowledge on the properties of the single appliances. The goal of the present contribution is to contrast this sense of bewilderness and to prepare the basis for a simulationtool able to support the orthodontist choice. In particular a finite-element beam with a one-dimensional constitutive law, able to describe the SMA super elasticity and shape memory effect, is presented: it is shown how computer… More >

Duning Li, Yufeng Niei?a, Xuemei Zhou, Li Cai

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 75-76, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.019.075

Abstract In this study, the efficient discrete model including the resin infusion and the fiber compaction is developed to simulate the RFI (resin film infusion) process. The non-linear governing equations are derived by the Darcy's law, the Terzaghi's law and the continuity equations. The finite element method and the finite difference method are used to discretize the proposed equations, and the VOF method is used to track the filling front. Compared with the analytical results of Park, our numerical results agree well with them. Furthermore, we analyze the RFI process of BMI/G0814, and simulate the resin pressure, the fiber volume fraction… More >

A High-Order Numerical Model for Species Transport and Emergency Response

    Xiuling Wang, Darrell W. Pepper

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 17-18, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.016.017

Abstract A high-order numerical model is developed to simulate species transport for use in emergency response situations. The model includes employing an hp-adaptive finite element technique to construct velocity fields within complex geometries as well as over irregular terrain features. Lagrangian particles are used to display contaminant dispersion patterns. The use of hp-adaptive finite element methods permit both automatic local refinement and unrefinement of the computational grid - a fine mesh is developed in those regions where flow features and/or species gradients change rapidly while a coarse mesh is employed where flow and transport are unvarying (or smooth). The use of… More >

Numerical Model for Predicting Charpy Impact Toughness of Weld Heat-Affected Zone of Steels

    M. Inomoto1,*, S. Aihara2, T. Kasuya2, T. Kawabata2, Y. Okazaki1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.22, No.2, pp. 139-139, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05781

Abstract Prediction of toughness of weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of steels is a difficult task because it is controlled by many parameters including grain-size, brittle microphase, hardness, etc. No reliable model has been established, yet. In the present study, a numerical model for predicting Charpy impact toughness of weld HAZ of steels has been developed. The model comprises two parts: phase transformation and toughness prediction. In the former part, phase fraction, size distribution of martensite-austenite brittle microphase, hardness, size of grain boundary ferrite and bainitic ferrite plate, etc. are calculated and these parameters are used in the latter part, in which… More >

Generalized Formula of the Fraction of Interphase for Polydisperse Non-Spherical Particles: Theoretical and Numerical Models

    Zhigang Zhu1,*, Wenxiang Xu1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.21, No.4, pp. 72-72, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.04957

Abstract The volume fraction of interphase is an important microstructure parameter in the prediction of macroscopic properties of particulate composites. Currently, some researchers have presented theoretical and numerical investigations on the interphase fraction for spherical particle systems, and even quantify the influence of interphase fraction on the overall elastic and transport properties of particulate composites. However, the overlapping interphase fraction in polydisperse non-spherical particle systems is still an open issue. In this study, a generic theoretical model is formulated to derive the overlapping interphase fraction for polydisperse 2D non-circular and 3D non-spherical particle systems by means of the statistical geometry of… More >

Numerical Modeling of Solid Movement in Phase Change Processes

    Igor Vušanović1,*, Vaughan R Voller2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.21, No.4, pp. 70-70, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05185

Abstract In the modeling of liquid to solid phase change processes the movement of the solid phase (e.g., the grains that form when solidifying an alloy) can have a significant impact on the timing and pattern of the process. While a number of solidification models account for the movement of the solid phase, additional analysis is needed to fully understand the phenomena and guide in the selection of appropriate numerical technologies for its resolution. Towards this end, here, we introduce a reduced complexity model (RCM) to describe the solidification of an initially liquid binary material flowing between two parallel cooled plates… More >

    Wajdi Zouari1,*, Mustapha Assarar1, Abderrazak Chilali2, Rezak Ayad1, Hocine Kebir3

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.9, pp. 839-853, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.06773

Abstract This contribution deals with the development of a three-node triangular plane finite element to analyze the transient hygroscopic behavior of 2/2 twill flax fabric-reinforced epoxy composite. Several plates of this material were fabricated using the vacuum infusion process and composite specimens were then cut and aged in tap water at room temperature until saturation. To simplify, a plane modelling of water diffusion in the aged specimens is adopted and Fick’s model is used to describe the water diffusion kinetics. To highlight the heterogeneity of the flax-epoxy samples, the twill flax fabrics waviness is modelled with a sinusoidal undulation. In particular,… More >
