    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.116, No.2, pp. 215-228, 2018, DOI: 10.31614/cmes.2018.04158

Abstract Our study evaluated the hemodynamic performance of an axial flow blood pump surgically implanted in idealized total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) models. This blood pump was designed to augment pressure from the inferior vena cava (IVC) to the pulmonary circulation. Two Fontan procedures with single and bilateral superior vena cava (SVC) were compared to fit the mechanical supported TCPC physiologies. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of two Pump-TCPC models were performed in the analyses. Pressure-flow characteristics, energy efficiency, fluid streamlines, hemolysis and thrombosis analyses were implemented. Numerical simulations indicate that the pump produces pressure generations of 1 mm to 24 mm… More >

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of Shroud Design on Hemodynamic Performance and Blood Damage in a Centrifugal Blood Pump

    Guangliang Pan1, Yu Chang1,*, Mingrui Fu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.116, No.2, pp. 199-213, 2018, DOI: 10.31614/cmes.2018.04080

Abstract Patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation still suffer from high rates of complication that linked to the flow field within the blood pump. So it is essential to optimise the geometry of the pump. The specification of shroud design is arguably the necessary design parameter in the centrifugal pump. However, the hemodynamic performances of the different shroud designs have not been studied extensively. In this study, ten different shroud designs were made and divided into two groups as the different covering locations (A: Covering the blade leading edge, B: Covering the blade trailing edge). In every group, six shroud designs with… More >

Abstract The application of a GPU-based particle method to three-dimensional incompressible viscous fluid flow problems is presented. The particle approach is based on the MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) scheme using logarithmic weighting function to stabilize the spurious oscillatory solutions for solving the Poisson equation with respect to the pressure fields by using GPU-based SCG (Scaled Conjugate Gradient) method. Numerical results demonstrate the workability and the validity of the present approach through the dam-breaking flow problem and flow behavior in a liquid ring pump with rotating impeller blades. Abstract The application of the MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) scheme to incompressible viscous fluid flow problem in the liquid ring vacuum pump with rotating impeller is presented. The rotating impeller in the pump is attached to a center hub and located in off-set from the center of a cylindrical body. For such flow problem there are some interesting phenomena including the formation of the liquid ring by rotating impeller, the interface dynamics between gas and liquid, and so forth. The MPS scheme is widely utilized as a particle strategy for the free surface flow, the problem of moving boundary, and multi-physics/multi-scale… More >

    Peng Tian1, Jun Huang1, Weidong Shi1,2,*, Ling Zhou1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 139-151, 2019, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2019.05216

Abstract A prototype centrifugal pump with a specific speed of 110 is used to investigate and optimize the performances of a turbine for power generation. Particular attention is given to the design of the internal impeller. The internal flow field is simulated in the framework of a commercial computational fluid dynamics software (ANSYS). Four geometrical parameters of the impeller are considered, i.e., the inlet diameter, the inlet width, the blade number, and the blade angle. The optimization is carried out on the basis of a three-level approach relying on an orthogonal test method. The results of the numerical simulations show good… More >

Electromagnetic DC Pump of Liquid Aluminium: Computer Simulation and Experimental Study

    Nedeltcho K,ev1, Val Kagan2, Ahmed Daoud1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 291-318, 2010, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2010.006.291

Abstract Results are presented of 3D numerical magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of electromagnetic DC pump for both laminar and turbulent metal flow under an externally imposed strongly non-uniform magnetic field. Numerous MHD flow cases were simulated using finite element method and the results of five typical examples are summarized here, including one example of laminar brake flow, one example of turbulent brake flow and three examples of turbulent pumping conditions. These simulations of laminar and turbulent channel flow of liquid metal correctly represent the formation of an M shaped velocity profile and are in good agreement with the results of recently published… More >
