    Lingai Guo1, Marwan Fahs2, Hussein Hoteit3, Rui Gao1,*, Qian Shao1,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.129, No.1, pp. 279-297, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.016619 - 24 August 2021

Abstract Numerical modeling of seepage-induced consolidation process usually encounters significant uncertainty in the properties of geotechnical materials. Assessing the effect of uncertain parameters on the performance variability of the seepage consolidation model is of critical importance to the simulation and tests of this process. To this end, the uncertainty and sensitivity analyses are performed on a seepage consolidation model in a fractured porous medium using the Bayesian sparse polynomial chaos expansion (SPCE) method. Five uncertain parameters including Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and the permeability of the porous matrix, the permeability within the fracture, and Biot’s constant… More >

    Ellie Vineyard1, Xin-Lin Gao2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.127, No.3, pp. 819-854, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.015688 - 24 May 2021

Abstract 2-D and 3-D micro-architectured multiphase thermoelastic metamaterials are designed and analyzed using a parametric level set method for topology optimization and the finite element method. An asymptotic homogenization approach is employed to obtain the effective thermoelastic properties of the multiphase metamaterials. The -constraint multi-objective optimization method is adopted in the formulation. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and Poisson’s ratio (PR) are chosen as two objective functions, with the CTE optimized and the PR treated as a constraint. The optimization problems are solved by using the method of moving asymptotes. Effective isotropic and anisotropic CTEs More >

    A. Shahzad1, W. A. Khan2,*, R. Gul1, B. Dayyan1, M. Zubair1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.68, No.3, pp. 3877-3893, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.012524 - 06 May 2021

Abstract In this work, a steady, incompressible Williamson fluid model is investigated in a porous wavy channel. This situation arises in the reabsorption of useful substances from the glomerular filtrate in the kidney. After 80% reabsorption, urine is left, which behaves like a thinning fluid. The laws of conservation of mass and momentum are used to model the physical problem. The analytical solution of the problem in terms of stream function is obtained by a regular perturbation expansion method. The asymptotic integration method for small wave amplitudes and the RK-Fehlberg method for pressure distribution has been… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.127, No.2, pp. 645-681, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.015894 - 19 April 2021

Abstract A combined shape and topology optimization algorithm based on isogeometric boundary element method for 3D acoustics is developed in this study. The key treatment involves using adjoint variable method in shape sensitivity analysis with respect to non-uniform rational basis splines control points, and in topology sensitivity analysis with respect to the artificial densities of sound absorption material. OpenMP tool in Fortran code is adopted to improve the efficiency of analysis. To consider the features and efficiencies of the two types of optimization methods, this study adopts a combined iteration scheme for the optimization process to More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.125, No.1, pp. 383-399, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09588 - 18 September 2020

Abstract The robust design optimization (RDO) is an effective method to improve product performance with uncertainty factors. The robust optimal solution should be not only satisfied the probabilistic constraints but also less sensitive to the variation of design variables. There are some important issues in RDO, such as how to judge robustness, deal with multi-objective problem and black-box situation. In this paper, two criteria are proposed to judge the deterministic optimal solution whether satisfies robustness requirment. The robustness measure based on maximum entropy is proposed. Weighted sum method is improved to deal with the objective function, More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.62, No.2, pp. 977-999, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.07184

Abstract To minimize the mass and increase the bearing failure load of composite doublelap bolted joints, a three-step optimization strategy including feasible region reduction, optimization model decoupling and optimization was presented. In feasible region reduction, the dimensions of the feasible design region were reduced by selecting dominant design variables from numerous multilevel parameters by sensitivity analyses, and the feasible regions of variables were reduced by influence mechanism analyses. In model decoupling, the optimization model with a large number of variables was divided into various sub-models with fewer variables by variance analysis. In the third step, the More >

Data-Driven Prediction of Mechanical Properties in Support of Rapid Certification of Additively Manufactured Alloys

    Fuyao Yan1, #, Yu hin Chan2,#, Abhinav Saboo3 , Jiten Shah4, Gregory B. Olson1, 3, Wei Chen2, *

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.3, pp. 343-366, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.04452

Abstract Predicting the mechanical properties of additively manufactured parts is often a tedious process, requiring the integration of multiple stand-alone and expensive simulations. Furthermore, as properties are highly location-dependent due to repeated heating and cooling cycles, the properties prediction models must be run for multiple locations before the part-level performance can be analyzed for certification, compounding the computational expense. This work has proposed a rapid prediction framework that replaces the physics-based mechanistic models with Gaussian process metamodels, a type of machine learning model for statistical inference with limited data. The metamodels can predict the varying properties… More >
