Structural Refinement of Titanium-Aluminum-Niobium Alloy for Biomedical Applications

    Joaquín E. González-Hernández1, Jorge M. Cubero-Sesin1,2*, Elena Ulate-Kolitsky1, Priscilla Navarro1, Stephen Petretti1, Zenji Horita3,4

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.3-4, pp. 300-306, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634120

Abstract In this work, a modification of the microstructure of a commercial Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy was accomplished by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature, to produce a bulk nanostructure on discs of 10 mm diameter and ~0.8 mm thickness. The metallographic analyses of the discs were performed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results confirmed the presence of aluminum (Al) and niobium (Nb) as the sole alloying elements, promoting a duplex (α + β) titanium (Ti) microstructure prior to HPT processing. After HPT processing, nanostructure refinement was attained, reflected in the More >

SINTERING OF TITANIUM AND NICKEL NANOPOWDERS WITH A ND:YAG NANOSECOND LASER

Jing Huang, Vitaly E. Gruzdev, Yuwen Zhang*, J. K. Chen

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.5, pp. 1-5, 2014, DOI:10.5098/hmt.5.1

Abstract Experimental study on laser sintering of nanosized titanium and nickel powders using a nanosecond laser is reported in this paper. Pulse laser with a wavelength of 532 nm and pulse width (FWHM) of 23 nanoseconds is used. The diameters of the metal nanoparticles are between 35 to 50 nanometers. Pulse repetition rates range between 100 and 10,000 Hz and the average power is from 1 to 20 W. The powder bed is placed on a moving stage to control the scanning velocity. Sintered metal strips with 20 mm length are formed by focusing the laser More >

Fracture Behavior of Heat Affected Zone of Laser-welded Joint for Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy: Experimental and Computational Study

    Zhao Xilong1, Zhang Jianxun1, Chen Hongyuan1,2, Song Xu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 557-571, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.092.557

Abstract In order to study failure perspective of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy welded joint, fracture behavior of the heat affected zone is researched. Microhardness, tensile test and microstructure are used to study the mechanical properties of the titanium alloy laser welded joint. The tensile and microhardness results show that heat affected zone near the base metal is the weakest in welded joints. This paper is based on the results from in-situ tension test to observe the process of crack expansion in heat affected zone. And then, in-situ test is simulated via the finite element method on ABAQUS More >

FLOW BOILING OF WATER ON TITANIUM AND DIAMOND-LIKE CARBON COATED SURFACES IN A MICROCHANNEL

Hai Trieu Phanb, Nadia Caneya,†, Philippe Martya, Stéphane Colassonb, Jérôme Gavilletb

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 1-6, 2011, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v2.1.3002

Abstract Experiments were performed to study the effects of surface wettability on flow boiling of water at atmospheric pressure. The test channel is a single rectangular channel 0.5 mm high, 5 mm wide and 180 mm long. The mass flux was set at 100 and 120 kg/m2 s and the base heat flux was varied from 30 to 80 kW/m2. Water enters the test channel under subcooled conditions. The sample surfaces are titanium (Ti) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) surfaces having a contact angle of 49° and 63°, respectively. The experimental results show different flow patterns that impact More >

Efficiency of Power Dissipation and Instability Criterion for Processing Maps in Hot Forming

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.18, No.3, pp. 271-300, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.018.271

Abstract The processing maps are a superimposition of iso-efficiency contour map and flow instability map, which are used to design hot working processing conditions in a wide variety of materials. In order to construct the processing maps, the efficiency of power dissipation and an instability criterion taking into account the contribution of strain and microstructure evolution are proposed based on a set of microstructure-based viscoplastic constitutive equations. In viscoplastic constitutive equations, the grain size of matrix phase and the dislocation density are taken as internal state variables. And, the material constants in present equations can be… More >

Study of Deformation Mechanisms in Titanium by Interrupted Rolling and Channel Die Compression Tests

    Lei Bao1,2, Christophe Schuman1, Jean-sébastien Lecomte1, Marie-Jeanne Philippe1, Xiang Zhao2, Liang Zuo2, Claude Esling1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 113-128, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.015.113

Abstract The mechanisms of small plastic deformation of titanium (T40) during cold rolling and channel die compression by means of "interrupted in situ" EBSD orientation measurements were studied. These interrupted EBSD orientation measurements allow to determine the rotation flow field which leads to the development of the crystallographic texture during the plastic deformation. Results show that during rolling, tension twins and compression twins occur and various glide systems are activated, the number of grains being larger with twins than with slip traces. In channel die compression, only tension twins are observed in some grains, whereas slip More >

Finite Element Simulations of Four-holes Indirect Extrusion Processes of Seamless Tube

    Dyi-Cheng1, Syuan-Yi Syong1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.13, No.3, pp. 191-200, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.013.191

Abstract Finite element simulations are performed to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy during its indirect extrusion through a four-hole die. The simulations assume the die, mandrel and container to be rigid bodies and ignore the temperature change induced during the extrusion process. Under various extrusion conditions, the present numerical analysis investigates the effective stress and profile of product at the exit. The relative influences of the friction factors, the temperature of billet and the eccentricity of four-hole displacement are systematically examined. The simulations focus specifically on the effects of the friction factor, More >
