    A. Maougal1, R. Bessaïh2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 35-59, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.035

Abstract The present study is a numerical investigation of the irreversibility and heat transfer properties of a steady laminar mixed flow in a square cavity, filled with a saturated porous medium and heated by a discrete set of heat sources. The continuity, Navier-Stokes, energy and entropy generation equations have been solved by a finite volume method. Both heat transfer irreversibility and fluid friction irreversibility have been taken into account in the computations of entropy generation. Simulations have bee carried out for Reynolds number Re=20, 40, 80, 100, 200, Darcy number, Da=10-5-10-1, Prandtl number, Pr=0.015, 0.7, 10, 103, and aspect ratio, D/H… More >

    A. Balbay1, H. Ülker2, Ö. Şahin3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 1-10, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.001

Abstract In this study, drying behaviours of the outer shell peeled Bittim (Pistacia terebinthus) with initial moisture content of 42.2% (dry basis (d.b)) was investigated in a novel fixed bed drying system. The drying experiments were performed at different temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C), air velocities (0.5 m/s and 1 m/s) and weights (30 g and 40 g). A constant rate period was not observed in the drying of bittims; all the drying process occurred in falling rate period. Three models in literature were selected to fit the experimental data. The fit quality of models was evaluated using… More >

Walid Hassen1, Mohamed Naceur Borjini2, Habib Ben Aissia1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 381-396, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2012.008.381

Abstract In this work we consider the problem related to the electro-thermo-convection of a dielectric fluid in a rectangular enclosure placed between two electrodes. This layer is subjected simultaneously to the injection of electric charges and to a thermal gradient. The influence of the electric Rayleigh number (200 - 1000) on the structure of the flow, the density of electric charge and heat transfer is investigated. An oscillatory flow is observed and discussed in detail. More >

Influence of the Air Gap Layer Thickness on Heat Transfer Between the Glass Cover and the Absorber of a Solar Collector

    F.Z. Ferahta1,2, S. Bougoul1, M. Médale2, C. Abid2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 339-352, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2012.008.339

Abstract A numerical study is carried out to evaluate the thermal performances of a solar collector. As it is well known, that the thermal losses of such systems are mainly of a convective nature, the study is concentrated in particular on the features of natural convection that is activated in the air domain delimited by the upper glass and the lower absorber of the solar collector. The efficiency of such a system depends essentially on both the temperature difference and the distance between the absorber and the glass. Since the temperature difference remains an uncontrolled variable (because it depends on the… More >

A 2D Improvement of Radiative Heat Transfer with the P1 Approximation and a Statistical Narrow Band Model

    A. Khourchafi1, M. El Alami2,3, M. Najam2, M. Belhaq4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 323-338, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2012.008.323

Abstract A spectral radiation study has been carried out in the framework of a statistical narrow-band model based on an inverse-tailed exponential law and the socalled P1 approximation. This new spectral formulation, which may be also regarded as a grey band formulation with a local absorption coefficient, leads to two implementation methods: a non correlated form in which the averaged formulation of the P1 approximation does not take into account the correlation between fundamental quantities and a pseudo-correlated variant consisting basically of a technique for improving the anisotropy of the radiative intensity. Real gases (H2O, CO2) are considered. The resulting tests… More >

    A. Saad1,2, A. Echchelh1, M. Hattabi3, M. El Ganaoui4, F. Lahlou1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 277-294, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2012.008.277

Abstract A modified finite element/control volume (FE/CV) method is used to solve the resin flow problem. Full advantage is taken of some of the intrinsic peculiar characteristics of the method, in particular, of its capability of eliminating the need to remesh continuously the resin-filled domain at each time step. The model leads to the numerical prediction of temperature, pressure distribution and flow front position with great accuracy, together with a precise representation of the thermal (spatio-temporal) behaviour of the resin inside the mould. The validity of such approach is validated by comparison with available analytical results. Results demonstrate that this modified… More >

    F. Moufekkir1, M.A. Moussaoui1, A. Mezrhab1,2, H. Naji3,4, M. Bouzidi5

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.2, pp. 129-154, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2012.008.129

Abstract The problem related to coupled double diffusive convection in a square enclosure filled with a gray gas in the presence of volumetric radiation is examined numerically. The horizontal walls are assumed to be insulated and impermeable. Different temperatures and species concentrations are imposed at vertical walls. In particular, we propose a 2-D numerical approach based on a hybrid scheme combining a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model (MRT-LBM) and a standard finite difference method (FDM). The radiative term in the energy equation is treated using the discrete ordinates method (DOM) with a S8 quadrature. The influence of various parameters (such as the… More >

Effect of a Porous Layer on the Flow Structure and Heat Transfer in a Square Cavity

    S. Hamimid1, M. Guellal1, A. Amroune1, N. Zeraibi2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 69-90, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2011.008.069

Abstract A two-dimensional rectangular enclosure containing a binary-fluid saturated porous layer of finite thickness placed in the centre of the cavity is considered. Phase change is neglected. Vertical and horizontal solid boundaries are assumed to be isothermal and adiabatic, respectively. A horizontal temperature gradient is imposed, driving convection of buoyancy nature. The Darcy equation, including Brinkman and Forchheimer terms is used to account for viscous and inertia effects in the momentum equation, respectively. The problem is then solved numerically in the framework of a Velocity-Pressure formulation resorting to a finite volume method based on the standard SIMPLER algorithm. The effects of… More >

    P. Yu1, T. S. Lee1, Y. Zeng1, H. T. Low2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.1, No.3, pp. 235-246, 2005, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2005.001.235

Abstract A numerical model is developed for the investigation of flow field and mass transport in a micro-bioreactor, of working volume below 5 ml, in which medium mixing is generated by a magnetic stirrer-rod rotating on the bottom. The flow-field results show that a recirculation region exists above the stirrer rod and rotates with it; the related fluid mixing is characterized by a circulation coefficient of up to 0.2 which is about five times smaller than that of a one-litre stirred-tank bioreactor. The oxygen transfer coefficient is less than 5 h-1 which is two orders smaller than that of a 10-litre… More >

Phonon Transport of Rough Si/Ge Superlattice Nanotubes

    Yuhang Jing1, Ming Hu2,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 43-59, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.038.043

Abstract Nanostructuring of thermoelectric materials bears promise for manipulating physical parameters to improve the energy conversion efficiency of thermoelectrics. In this paper the thermal transport in Si/Ge superlattice nanotubes is investigated by performing nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations aiming at realizing low thermal conductivity by surface roughening. Our calculations revealed that the thermal conductivity of Si/Ge superlattice nanotubes depends nonmonotonically on periodic length and increases as the wall thickness increases. However, the thermal conductivity is not sensitive to the inner diameters due to the strong surface scattering at thin wall thickness. In addition, introducing roughness onto the superlattice nanotubes surface can destroy… More >
