An Improved Tracking Technique for Assessment of High Resolution Dynamic Radiography Kinematics

    G. Papaioannou1, C. Mitrogiannis1, G. Nianios1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.2, pp. 41-46, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.041

Abstract Previous attempts to track skeletal kinematics from sequences of images acquired using biplane dynamic radiography report challenges in automating the tracking technique due to image resolution issues, occlusion from segments appearing synchronously in the field of view and computational load. This translates into many hours of manual work to export the kinematics. The proposed new tracking method tackles the above problems and reduces the time to export kinematics from several hours to less than 3 minutes. More >

A New Equation to Determine the Springback in the Bending Process of Metallic Sheet

    Z. Damián-Noriega1, R. Pérez-Moreno1, S.A. Villanueva-Pruneda1, V.M. Domínguez-Hernández2, J.P.A. Puerta-Huerta1, C. Huerta-Muñoz3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 25-30, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.025

Abstract In this work, a new equation to predict the springback in the bending and rolling processes of metallic sheet is presented. This equation has been experimentally applied in the design of a wood truncated cone to form an aluminum sheet truncated cone. Kalpakjian's equation was also applied but Damian's equation has given the best performance. More >

An Experimental Method for Kinematic Measurement of a Four-Bar Mechanism by Digital Video Analysis

    Romy P. Moreno1, Mario G. Villeda2, Sergio A. V. Pruneda2, Zeferino D. Noriega2, Pedro G. Segura2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 19-24, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.019

Abstract Measuring the position, speed and acceleration of the moving elements of a mechanism usually involves external instrumentation that has to be attached to it, which is not always feasible. The method discussed here provides an alternative to measure these kinematics characteristics without modifying the components. To test the method in a controlled environment a four-bar mechanism was build. It was designed to be as thin as possible and to allow arbitrary changes in its lengths. Three commercial programs and a specially designed software (KIMA{\textregistered }) are used to record, analyze, measure, compute and verify the kinematics of the mechanism. More >

Indentation Analysis of a Multi-Layered Hollow Cylinder for the Measurement of Interfacial Toughness in TBC Systems

    Q. Ma1,2, J. L. Beuth1, G. H. Meier3, F. S. Pettit3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 13-18, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.013

Abstract This paper addresses the mechanics of indentation-induced delamination of a coating on a multi-layered hollow cylinder, for application to toughness testing of thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. An electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) TBC system has been analyzed through a contact finite element model using a standard conical indenter impressed vertically on the top of the cylinder. Two cylinder sizes used in thermal-mechanical fatigue tests in literature have been considered in the analysis, with outer radii of 5.11 mm and 3.08 mm, and inner radii of 3.00 mm and 0.97 mm, respectively. Two boundary conditions for the inner surface of… More >

Patient Specific Knee Joint Finite Element Model Validation with High Accuracy Kinematics from Biplane Dynamic Radiography

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 7-12, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.007

Abstract Little is known about in vivo menisci loads and displacements in the knee during strenuous activities. We have developed a method that combines biplane high-speed dynamic radiography (DRSA) and a subject-specific finite element model for studying in vivo meniscal behavior. In a very controlled uniaxial compression loading condition, removing of the pressure sensor from the model can result in relatively large errors in contact and cartilage stress that are not reflected in the change of meniscal displacement. Inverse Estimation of Moisture Diffusivity by Utilizing Temperature Response of a Drying Body

    G. Kanevce1, L. Kanevce2, V. Mitrevski3, G. Dulikravich4

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 1-6, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.001

Abstract This paper deals with the application of inverse concepts in drying. The objective of the paper is estimation of the moisture diffusivity of a drying body by using only temperature measurements. Potato and apple slices have been chosen as representative drying bodies with significant shrinkage effects. A mathematical model of the drying process of shrinking bodies has been applied. The Levenberg-Marquardt method and a hybrid optimization method of minimization of the least-squares norm were used to solve the present parameter estimation problem. More >

Determination of the Size Effect Law with One-Size Concrete Specimens of Different Notch Depths

    H. Cifuentes1, F. Medina2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 197-202, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.197

Abstract The most popular expression that considers the size effect showed in concrete structures is the size effect law of Bazant. This law depends on two coefficients Gf and cf. For the experimental determination of these coefficients is necessary obtaining the ultimate loads, in three points bending tests, of notched beams with different sizes. In this work, a method to determine the coefficients about the results on identical beams varying the deep of the notch, is presented. The necessary values of loads are obtained by a numerical analysis with FEM that considers non linear behaviour of the concrete material. Next the… More >
