Abstract Schizophrenia is a common and serious mental illness characterized by severe impairments in thinking, emotions, and behaviors. Usually, the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia are closely associated with abnormal neurogenesis due to the hypofunction of certain neural receptors such as N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), which mediates neurotransmission. However, little is known about the involvement of NMDAR1 in regulating hippocampal neurogenesis in schizophrenia. In the current study, we present evidence suggesting that NMDAR1 regulates hippocampal neurogenesis as lentivirus-mediated shRNA silencing NMDAR1 gene or blocking with MK-801 results in abnormal neurogenesis consistently found in schizophrenia. The important finding was clearly demonstrated by the multiparametric… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol., , DOI: 10.32604/biocell.2021.013706

Abstract Cowpea is one of the most important legume grains in the sub-Saharan region of Africa used for human consumption and animal feed, but its production is hampered by biotic and abiotic constraints raising the need to broaden its genetic basis. For this purpose, seeds of two cowpea varieties Melakh and Yacine were irradiated with 300 and 340 Gy of gamma-ray, respectively. The developed mutant populations were agromorphologically characterized from M5 to M7, while the genetic diversity of the latter was evaluated using 13 ISSR markers. Based on the agromorphological characterization, variation of flower color, pod length, seed coat color, and… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol., , DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.013496

Abstract Increasing evidence indicates that aberrant expressions of some microRNAs are associated with cancer progression. However, the roles and biological mechanisms of miRNA-16-5p in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are not to be well studied. Here, we validated that the expression of miR-16-5p was decreased significantly in NSCLC samples and cell lines. The correlation between the clinicopathological features of NSCLC and the miR-16- 5p expression showed that the expression of miR-16-5p in non-small cell lung cancer was linked with the advanced TNM stage, positive lymph node metastasis, with short overall survival (OS). Also, a negative correlation between miR-16-5p and Fermitin… More >

SERGIO GASTÓN CASPE1, JOSÉ LUIS KONRAD2, DADIN PRANDO MOORE3, JUAN MANUEL SALA1, LILIAN LISCHINSKY3, CARLOS MANUEL CAMPERO3, CLAUDIO GUSTAVO BARBEITO4,*

    BIOCELL, Vol., , DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.010701

Abstract Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus) are closely related species. However, embryo transfer interspecies has been attempted without any success. The failure in hybrid embryo-implantation is associated with the glycocode in the maternal-fetal interface. Glycosylation patterns have been studied in different species of ruminants; however, in B. bubalis, only the binucleated cells (BNC) have been analyzed. This glycocode is essential for a successful embryo-implantation and can be defined by Lectin-Histochemistry (LHC). The aim of this study is to compare the glycosylation pattern of placenta and uterus in water buffaloes and cattle by LHC. Tissue samples of placenta… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol., , DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.010277

Abstract Male muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus L.) secrete musk from their scent glands during musk secretion season. Musk plays an important role as a communication pheromone during the breeding season. In this study, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was used to analyze the main components of musk. The GC–MS results after methyl esterification showed that 71.55% of the musk is composed of fatty acids. The other components of muskrat musk include cholesterol (9.31%) and other organics. Transcriptome comparison between musk secretion and non-secretion seasons showed significant changes in the scent glands for 53 genes involved in fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis and metabolism… More >

Organosolv Lignin for Non-Isocyanate Based Polyurethanes (NIPU) as Wood Adhesive

    Jaša Saražin1, Antonio Pizzi2, Siham Amirou2, Detlef Schmiedl3, Milan Šernek1,*

Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol., , DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.015047

Abstract A non-isocyanate-based polyurethane (NIPU) wood adhesive was produced from organosolv lignin, which is a bio-sourced raw material, available in large quantities and produced as a by-product of the paper industry. The formulation of this new lignin-based NIPU adhesive, which is presented, was chemically characterised by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight (MALDI ToF) mass spectrometry and by Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectrometry analyses. The oligomers formed were determined and showed that the three species involved in the NIPU adhesive preparation were formed by the co-reaction of the three reagents used: lignin, dimethyl carbonate, and hexamethylene diamine. Linear and branched… More >

Abstract Hydrangea bretschneideri Dipp is a highly popular ornamental plant for garden decoration. Genetic engineering technology has been successfully used in many plant species, but it is limited in Hydrangea. Here we established an efficient regeneration system by using stem segments as explants for the first time. In our study, the plant growth regulators (PGRs) were evaluated at the different regeneration processes, including axillary shoots regeneration and root induction. We found that the optimal concentration for axillary buds’ induction was 2.0 mgL−1 6-BA and 0.5 mgL−1 1 IAA, its highest induction rate was 70%. Moreover, the highest axillary shoots proliferation coefficient… More >
