The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 157-164, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.157

Abstract The purpose of this research is to develop a new technique to measure the corrosion level of reinforcing rebar which embedded in reinforced concrete structures using infrared(IR) thermographical image. IR thermography has been used various applications for non-destructive test(NDT) area, however, IR thermographical data depend on many parameters that the assessment of reliability and stability becomes very important issue to utilize IR thermographical system. This study presents a technique to quantitatively measure the corrosion level of a reinforcing bar using proposed infrared thermography measurement system. We found out electric heating method has an important effect on active IR thermography at… More >

Brittle Fracture under Dynamical Loading with of Accounting of the Crack Edges Contact Interaction

    A.N. Guz1, V.V. Zozulya2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 151-156, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.151

Abstract The contact interaction of opposite faces of cracks in 2-D and 3-D solid is studied. The case of a normal time-harmonic wave loading is studied in more details. The distribution of stress intensity factors as functions of the wave number is investigated. The results are compared with those obtained for cracks without allowance for the contact interaction. The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 145-150, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.145

Abstract The ear can be divided anatomically, into three parts: external, middle, and inner ear. The eardrum separates the external from the middle ear. The perforation of the eardrum can result in conductive moderate hearing loss. More >

    F.R.M. Romlay1,2, A. Mokhtar2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 139-144, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.139

Abstract This paper presents an optimization of the wire-Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) cutting parameter at welding joint area. The experiment is conducted during a gear shape optimization process by reducing the gear material and weight. Some area of the gear is welded for material joining process. The wire-EDM cutting process is conducted by cutting at the single material and welding area. The parameters of cutting process such as wire speeds, wire tensions and wire voltage are considered to be optimized. The cutting condition at the single and double materials area is compared. The result of the experiment shows that the cutting… More >

    Meshless Unsymmetric Collocation Method

    Leevan Ling1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 133-138, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.133

Abstract The history of meshless collocation methods featured plenty of nicely calculated practical solutions, but a solid mathematical basis was long missing for the most popular asymmetric technique introduced by E. Kansa. Thus the impact of this work will be to supply a lasting mathematical foundation which will also improve our general understanding of such technique. Our previous research gave a convergent algorithm. More >

Mesh Quality Improvement for Unstructured Quadrilateral Multigrid Analysis

    Y. Wada1, T. Hayashi2, M. Kikuchi3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 127-132, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.127

Abstract Due to more complex and severe design, more effective and faster finite element analyses are demanded. One of the most effective analysis ways is the combination of adaptive analysis and multigrid iterative solver, because an adaptive analysis requires several meshes with different node densities and multigrid solver utilizes such meshes to accelerate its computation. However, convergence of multigrid solver is largely affected by initial shape of each element. An effective mesh improvement method is proposed here. It is the combination of mesh coarsening and refinement. A good mesh can be obtained by the method to be applied to an initial… More >

    Mechanics of Fragmentable Geomaterials

    A.P.S. Selvadurai1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 121-126, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.121

Abstract This paper examines the mechanics of brittle fragmentation that can occur in geomaterials subjected to critical stress states that promote fragmentation as opposed to plastic flow. The discrete element technique is used to examine the dynamic interaction between a moving ice floe and a stationary structure. The results illustrate the influence of fragmentation on the reduction of the dynamic interactive stresses. More >

Computation of Optimal Friction of Tuned Mass Damper for Controlling Base-Excited Structures

    Sang-Hyun Lee1, Sung-Sik Woo1, Seung-Ho Cho1, Lan Chung1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 115-120, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.115

Abstract In this study, based on the results from the sinusoidal base excitation analyses of a single degree of freedom system with a tuned mass damper (TMD), the optimal friction is computed so that the rail friction improve the performance of the TMD. The magnitude of the optimal friction increases with increasing mass ratio of the TMD and decreases with increasing structural damping. Particularly, it is observed that the optimized friction force gives better control performance than the optimized viscous damping of the TMD. However, because the performance of the TMD considerably deteriorates when the friction force increases over the optimal… More >

3D Crack Growth by Considering Re-Entrant Corners

    E. Schnack1, K. Kolk2, A. Dimitrov3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 107-114, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.107

Abstract In fracture mechanics, corner and wedge singularities have to be considered for two- and three-dimensional problems in isotropic and layered anisotropic continua. To investigate the behaviour of crack propagation starting from corners and edges the information about stress asymptotics in the vicinity of three-dimensional corner points is needed [1]. Thus, in this paper two aspects are studied: the interface crack in layered anisotropic materials with re-entrant corners and surface cracks in homogeneous isotropic continua. Moreover a strategy is presented to model such surface breaking cracks efficiently within a numerical 3D simulation [2]. To study the effect of geometrical singularities generalized… More >

Quantum Ghost Imaging by Measuring Reflected Photons

    R. E. Meyers1, K. S. Deacon1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 101-106, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.101

Abstract A new type of imaging, Quantum ghost imaging, is described that is based on the measurement of photons reflected from an object . A CCD array is placed facing a chaotic light source and gated by a photon counting detector that simply counts all randomly reflected photons from an object. A ``ghost'' image of the object is then observed in the gated CCD. This interesting demonstration is not only useful for practical applications, such as x-ray lensless imaging, but is also important from a fundamental point of view. It further explores the nonclassical two-photon interference nature of thermal light ghost… More >
