On the Validity of the Fracture Mechanics Approach to Hydrogen Assisted Cracking

    J. Toribio1, V. Kharin2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 135-140, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.135

Abstract This paper deals with the meaning and significance of the fracture mechanics approach to hydrogen assisted cracking, analyzing the question of K-dominance not only over the purely mechanical aspects, but also over the environmental (physicochemical) events. Two key factors able to violate the uniqueness of the crack growth kinetics curve v = v(K) are discussed: the role of far field (the stress-strain field which is not K-dominated) and the effect of the history of hydrogenation and crack growth. The far field is shown to have a minor effect on near-tip hydrogen diffusion, and thus it can only widen the scatter… More >

Numerical Investigation on Resonant Sloshing Characteristics of 2-D Baffled Liquid Container

    Jong-Kook Cha1, Jin-Rae Cho1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 129-134, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.129

Abstract Sloshing flow is formulated based on the linearized potential flow theory, while an artificial damping term is employed into the kinematic free-surface condition to reflect the eminent dissipation effect in resonant sloshing. Through the numerical analysis of sloshing frequency response with respect to the number, location and opening width of baffle, the sloshing damping characteristics by baffle are parametrically investigated. Tire Standing Wave Simulation by 3-D Explicit Finite Element Method

    Jung-Chul An1, Jin-Rae Cho1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 123-128, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.123

Abstract Tire standing wave is one of the crucial factors that may lead to unexpected tire structural failure because the total strain energy of the tire dramatically increases when it occurs. However, its analytical analysis has been limited owing not only to the complicated tire structure and material composition, but also to the problem nonlinearity. In this paper, its characteristics are numerically investigated with the help of the transient dynamic rolling analysis of the 3-D patterned tire model. More >

Aerodynamic Analysis of Helicopter Rotor using a Time-Domain Panel Method

    Seawook Lee1, Leesang Cho2, Jin-Soo Cho3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 113-122, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.113

Abstract Computational methods based on the solution of the flow model are widely used for the analysis of low-speed, inviscid, attached-flow problems. Most of such methods are based on the implementation of the internal Dirichlet boundary condition. In this paper, the time-domain panel method uses the piecewise constant source and doublet singularities. The present method utilizes the time-stepping loop to simulate the unsteady motion of the rotary wing blade for the KHP. The wake geometry is calculated as part of the solution with no special treatment. To validate the results of aerodynamic characteristics, the typical blade was chosen such as, Caradonna-Tung… More >

Normal Modes of Rotating Timoshenko Beams

    T.-L. Zhu1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 107-112, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.107

Abstract A modeling method for flapwise and chordwise bending vibration analysis for rotating Timoshenko beams is introduced. For the modeling method shear and the rotary inertia effects are correctly judged based on \textit {Timoshenko beam theory}. Equations of motion of continuous models are derived from a modeling method which employs hybrid deformation variables. The equations thus derived are transmitted into dimensionless forms. The effects of dimensionless parameters on the modal characteristics of the Timoshenko beams are successfully examined through numerical study. In particular, eigenvalue loci veering phenomena and integrated mode shape critical deviations are contemplated and examined in this work. More >

A Nonlinear Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Approach Based on the Nonlinear Regular Local Boundary Integral Equation

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 101-106, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.101

Abstract A nonliear meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (NMLPG) method for solving nonlinear boundary value problems, based on the nonlinear regular local boundary integral equation (NRLBIE) and the moving least squares approximation, is proposed in the present paper. No special integration scheme is needed to evaluate the volume and boundary integrals. The integrals in the present method are evaluated only over regularly-shaped sub-domains and their boundaries. This flexibility in choosing the size and the shape of the local sub-domain will lead to a more convenient formulation in dealing with the nonlinear problems. Compared to the original meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method that has… More >

Modal Analysis Technique for Anisotropic Composite Laminates

    G.M. Mota1, P. Sollero1, F.B. Batista1, E.L. Albuquerque1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 95-100, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.095

Abstract Nowadays, the experimental modal analysis in composite materials is an important tool in the structural analysis of new designs in aircraft structures. It supplies data on the behavior of these materials and, when associated with numerical methods, it can also be used to identify elastic properties. However, lightweight composite materials demand the use of appropriate techniques and devices. This paper describes an experimental modal analysis technique where the response is measured without physical contact in a large number of points using a Laser Doopler Vibrometer (LDV), and the excitation is carried out on a single point by an electromechanical shaker. P. Kuklik1, M. Zalesky2, J. Zalesky3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 89-94, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.089

Abstract The robust analytical solution was carried out to describe the stress state in the massive round boreholes. It gives the chance for complex back analysis of dilatometric in situ measurements. The main goal of this presentation is to present the incorporating phenomenon of influence zone around the boreholes. The analytical solution gives the chance to describe the progress of plastic zone around the hole. More >

On the Use of the Tangential Differential Operator in the Traction Boundary Integral Equation of the Dual Boundary Element Method for Three Dimensional Problems

    L. Palermo Jr., L.P.C.P.F. Almeida1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 83-88, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.083

Abstract The differentiation of the kernels of integrals in the displacement BIE to obtain one for stresses increases the order of the kernel singularity and additional care are necessary to treat the improper integrals. The application of the tangential differential operator (TDO) can reduce the order of the kernel singularity when the stress BIE employs Kelvin type fundamental solutions. This paper presents the numerical formulation for the TDO to three-dimensional problems. The TDO uses the derivatives of the shape function for displacements instead of introducing another interpolation function. Furthermore, the paper shows the additional integrals for the TDO to be applied… More >
