    Confocal laser scanning microscopy and immunohistochemistry of cerebellar Lugaro cells

    Abstract The present paper shows by means of confocal laser scanning microscopy the immunoreactivity of rat cerebellar Lugaro cells for calbindin, synapsin-I, PSD-95, GluR1, CaMKII alpha, and N-cadherin. Lugaro cells were easily characterized by their location beneath Purkinje cells. Calbindin revealed immunoreactivity in the cell body, and the axonal and dendritic processes. Synapsin-I labelled the presynaptic endings on Lugaro cells. Synapsin-I and PSD-95 immunoreactivity demonstrated the localization of presynaptic and postsynaptic endings surrounding cell soma, corresponding to afferent extrinsic and intrinsic cerebellar fi bers.     Forced Dissociation of the Strand Dimer Interface between C-Cadherin Ectodomains

    Abstract The force-induced dissociation of the strand dimer interface in C-cadherin has been studied using steered molecular dynamics simulations. The dissociation occurred, without domain unraveling, after the extraction of the conserved trypthophans (Trp2) from their respective hydrophobic pockets. The simulations revealed two stable positions for the Trp2 side chain inside the pocket. The most internal stable position involved a hydrogen bond between the ring Ne of Trp2 and the backbone carbonyl of Glu90.     Abstract Melatonin (MLT) is a hormonal substance found in many organisms and can improve plant stress resistance. In this study, the japonica rice variety Y32 and indica rice variety NJ6 were cultivated in hydroponics under different concentrations of CdCl2 at the two-leaf stage.     Abstract The use of natural fibers as an additive in polymeric matrices has attracted interest of the automotive industries, for its low cost, mechanical properties, biodegradability and lightness.     Performance Comparison of Chemically Modified Sugarcane Bagasse for Removing Cd(II) in Water Environment

    Abstract This paper evaluates the adsorption capacity of chemically sugarcane bagasses with sodium hydroxide (SHS), citric acid (CAS), tartaric acid (TAS) and unmodified sugarcane bagasse (SB) for cadmium adsorption in water environment. The results prove adsorption capacity for Cd (II) increases after chemical modification and the adsorption fits perfectly with the Langmuir isotherm. CAS had the highest maximum adsorption capacity of 45.45 mg/g followed by TAS with 38.46 mg/g and SHS with 29.41 at optimum pH 5.0 and 120 minutes equilibrium time while 1 g SB removed 18.8 mg Cd (II) in the same conditions.     Abstract The paper presents an aerodynamic design method for turbomachinery cascades of blades. The prescribed conditions are the aerodynamic blade load and the blade thickness distributions. An iterative procedure was implemented, based on the solution of the Euler equations, to seek the blade geometry that provides the specified design conditions. A central finite-volume explicit time-marching scheme is used to solve the Euler equations in two-dimensional flow.
