    Effects of fusaric acid on Zea mays L. seedlings

    Abstract The effects of fusaric acid, a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium sp, were investigated in relation to its action on corn seedlings. The mycotoxin inhibited the development of corn seedlings at 0.2 mM, causing root length reduction. Anatomically, alterations were only visible from 0.5 mM fusaric acid, directly influencing the cell differentiation process. Precocious differentiation reduces the elongation region. This explains (1) that root shortening is morphologically visible, and (2) the differentiation of a great number of lateral roots nearby the apex, which can be seen in longitudinal cuts. More >

    Abstract Regeneration and multiplication of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) through somatic embryogenesis can be efficiently achieved through different methods. However, it is very important to analyze the progenies obtained by these methods in order to establish their genetic stability.     Abstract Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) has been developed as a versatile field that uses different techniques sharing the common feature of resonant micro-wave radiation absorption by paramagnetic substances. Certain free radicals, such as ascorbyl radical (A•), show an stable spectrum, and can be directly detected by EPR at room temperature.     Abstract The present study analyzed several characters of the red seaweed Gymnogongrus torulosus, such as cellular structure of the thallus, cuticle, pit plug and cell wall ultrastructure, and morphology of some organelles like plastids, Golgi bodies and mitochondria. Also, anomalous chloroplasts with thylakoid disorganization were found in medullary cells. The significance of this thylakoid disposition is still unclear.     Abstract The influence of different loading rates on the structural response of elasto/viscoplastic materials is illustrated with specific numerical examples. An associated formulation of the evolutive laws in elasto/viscoplasticity is presented within the framework of the generalized standard material model with internal variables. An appropriate solution scheme is applied which is capable to be adopted for different constitutive models. Different loading programs are analyzed by considering different values of the loading rate and of the intrinsic properties of the material.     Abstract This paper presents a study on fatigue crack growth modelling of thin walled tube aluminium alloy with circumferential crack under constant and variable amplitude loadings. Three fatigue crack growth models were investigated for this purpose, i.e. Walker, Forman and NASGRO. The results showed the differences in the fatigue crack growth simulation under both loading types, although, they have the same stress ratio for the maximum value.
